  1. +1. I cannot believe anyone can operate a car sourcing business with random members of the public that do not commit financially beforehand.
  2. I’m normally unsympathetic to greedy people being ripped off but this is a terrible tale, they must of been terrified. The thugs certainly don’t mess about in Manchester! I understand the victim’s family’s concern over the loss of money however I will not be contributing to the GoFundMe page that they’ve set-up to re-coup the money stolen. Although they’ve been treated appalling I feel there are far more deserving cases of charity than a couple of greedy people who were more than happy to pay (I’m tempted to say legally rob) someone 50% of the true value of the goods (in this case the car). Appalling as this all is, I wish them well & hope they fully recover but these two aren’t charity cases in my book.
  3. TV I know the answer you’re looking for is “No fucker” but I always thought the Maestro was a better car than the pitiful Escort/Orion. I’m saying that purely from a driving proposition - I had nowt to do with car selling in those days. Tbh I thought they drove better than VW’s miserable Golf too. I honestly think they weren’t bad cars, although the stepper motor choke system was shit (remember that?) & usually wanted to set an idle speed of about 2000rpm. I also remember having a blast to a pub in a neighbour’s MG Montego - 2 full litres of fuel injected Leyland power. I’d been reduced to Renault motoring at the time in the shape of a 5 1.1 - what a heap of shit. Honestly, the Montego felt like a Ferrari, it went like shit off a shovel! Or so I thought!!!
  4. Hahaha, I think that’s called schizophrenia.
  5. Absolutely correct. I think I’m cheapish but there are lads buying cars & proud to be working for £4-500 a bonnet. Tbh there are some on the bangers who work on £2-300 a bonnet, some are even paying out for cheap storage units & Autotrader! How on earth they pay the bills, pay a decent wage & sell safe cars is beyond me, although I suspect the last one doesn’t concern them too much.
  6. I used to do plenty of CRVs (not autos due to cost) but how many people go out shopping with about £10K & want to be in a 10yr old Honda? For the record I don’t disagree with what you say, it’s just that it must be a narrow market. I know they cost a fortune as I found out 6mths ago. I’d sold the Mrs’ old one & after 4 weeks of looking a nice auto CRV came up at the block. I paid a ridiculous £7500 for a low mileage 60-plate. But as I say, it must be a narrow market cos a decent manual would be a fraction of the price.
  7. I didn’t think it took verbal instructions, I thought it just talked to you when you had a problem. Given the quality of Austin Rover’s products I guess the computer’s voice became hoarse rather quickly.
  8. I thought that before I even opened up this topic.
  9. That was it! And what about those shite exhaust bandages? As though a bandage wrapped around would satisfactorily seal against an exhaust box . I remember as a young lad in my first car, a Chevette, I naively decided to try some mastic on the exhaust. Well, it looked the same colour! Three miles up the road smoke belching from the underside then it got inside the cabin & nearly choked us. Mind you, the trade wasn't much better. My second car was a Maestro (an auto, it sounded half-interesting to me) from a garage, they bodged-up the exhaust which promptly fell out. Anyway to cut a long story short after the third visit for a ‘repair’ I’d had enough, replaced the back box myself and phoned to tell them I was coming to which the spineless bastards had locked themselves up! I flung the back box at their window but this pathetic item barely kissed the glass & fell to the floor. That was my career as a thug, a young man last seen driving away in a green automatic Maestro, over.
  10. If it was introduced the vendors wouldn’t have a choice. Sytner do just that & let’s be honest, some of the prices on there, even from those with poor ratings, can be eye watering. The response to any form of ratings are VASTLY overrated - if people think the price is right they’ll buy.
  11. Tbh you can’t reason with this mentality. This is just someone else who wants telling to fuck off
  12. A bullshitter. Tell the man to fuck off, you’ll see him in court. PS. He has had the car MOTed. ABS is part of the MOT. This proves the part he’s claiming for wasn’t faulty prior to XX date therefore absolving you of any responsibility even if you had sold it as a retail sale.
  13. Not that mine were in the £8-10K range but for me they died over a year ago. ’All the dough, slow to go’ springs to mind with CRVs. They’ve been overpriced at the block for too long now but I think there is some general price correction on these due, although not soon enough imo.
  14. I know them small car punters are greedy but trying to come back for a partial credit? The general public are getting worse.
  15. Crikes! They’ve never been good sellers anyway, have they? And boy, they look ancient nowadays.
  16. Anyone fancy a bit of grinding with adomanim?
  17. 4 years & 5 months - that must be a record!
  18. Even if you agree to their offers they don’t back them up with cold hard cash. I usually ignore them (because usually the offers are a fucking joke) but this week had 2 very close & sensible offers on two mid-termers, so I thought to myself ‘Why not? Hopefully I’m proved wrong with these email dickheads’. Unfortunately I wasn’t. One decides (presumably because I’d agreed to her offer) that she then wanted a 3mth warranty including for our agreed price. Then 6mths. Then can I revise costs. The other emailer, much to my amazement, phoned. It appeared that his cash offer wasn’t what I think of as a cash offer.......to this Norwich-based imbecile an ex-NHS Mondeo “all the holes in the bodywork have been done, mate” represents cash, if I don’t want it (correct) he’ll sell it privately cos he’s got the money. In the space of 10 seconds he then tells me he’s getting the train, getting the bus, getting his Mrs. to drive him here at the weekend (he must be thinking of making 3 journeys!). I just kept answering ok, ok, ok and at the earliest opportunity brought the call to an end. With 50% of the general public I think I’m an unpaid mental health counsellor.
  19. With great luck! Funnily enough last weekend I sold one, just under £6K, within 4 hours of advertising. My quickest sale (not the phone call, the actual money in hand) on a car advertised publicly was under 20 minutes on a £300 p/x Avensis estate. I’ll point out last weekend was a pure fluke, if they go within a fortnight I’m doing cartwheels, some I have for months and the occasional one gets to blow out a candle on its birthday cake.
  20. Take your pick; 1) cos he’s a lying twat who’ll do anything to make a sale. OR 2) cos he’s a fucking idiot.
  21. Correct BUT he was told it “is ULEZ compliant”. It isn’t. I think it’s worth trying to blag the customer but there’s no way this would stand if it went legal. It’s certainly worth trying to pay off the customer but if he’s having none of it then this a clear & brazen case of misrepresentation. No ifs or buts, it’s misrepresentation. I’ll sum this up; Just another case of a secondhand car salesmen misleading a customer.
