  1. Ahh, thanks. Can see that now. I mean, it's clear the whole trader/ not a trader thing is a bit dodgy, but it would seem harsh that we would have to stand by a leggy old smoker after a month - a month of guarantee against major failure would seem reasonable, in my book. Sadly it's not my book though - it's the CRA. The irony is legally, with proper PDI and invoicing, you could have avoided this by selling it through the business. I think in your original post you're asking whether he'll just go away... he may, he may not. Depending on what you sold the car for I'd give him a call, sound him out and work towards a get it back and check, offer a contribution or see if he's trying it on.
  2. We've always been very selective about who we deal with in this trade. The large majority are not to be trusted. What exactly is being proposed? Along the lines BHM suggests is not as risky as it fills the site without outlay.

  4. UK manufacturing's at it's highest point for 10 years. Not at the 70s boom year levels where it contributed 25% of GDP but that's a different world. Brexit will only help us build more I think.
  5. Same as everyone else. Down around 35% on overall numbers made up for on healthy margins. I think it could be weather related. We're also way behind on prepping cars because of it.

  8. Wow. Sickening. Cowards. I'm quite sure the story he had from her was far from what was actually said by you as well. In the last two and a half years of being on site we've twice had threats of "I'll come down and key every car, blah blah", which is different to yours as there was no warning. We always call 101 and report it. Police often go and have a word with them. It's pretty effective. I don't like to consider myself a grass but I don't want to wake up to that and these people won't come and deal with it face to face.

  11. I always feel like there's more to these stories because I don't think this is a tough one. Whenever we get a problem like this it's explained relatively simply "if we're going to discuss the option of a refund first we need to establish there's a problem. I can't do that unless I'm given the car" At that point, nine times out of ten, it's a simple fix and we call them back saying "it's ready, all sorted, pretty simple really it was just...". In this case if you can't find a problem get the car MOT'd, you can at least show some post-sale diligence and ensure it's safe. A carbon monoxide meter in the cabin would be a good idea too. No disrespect but I dunno why people get their knickers in a twist over this stuff. Law or not there's a common sense way of working when there's an issue.
  12. As you maybe eluding that sounds like an opportunist. I've heard nothing regarding necessary changes to equipment from the two stations we use - and they definitely would've moaned! I'll ask the tester on Monday to make sure.
  13. Classic buyer's remorse. Maybe because you were so nice to him he's thought you were a soft touch... it seems it's time to become a bit more Mr Hyde and explain how he's done nothing but moan. Regardless of the tyre's condition, 2mm or 8mm, they're legal and therefore he's no recourse to return the car. Depending on how far away he is I'd get the car back, carry out an inspection and (upon finding nothing) get him to sign that on collection. Diligence and duty of care above and beyond box ticked.
  14. I'd be telling him to take a hike. Honestly. The shit people come out with. What does he expect you to do? I wouldn't entertain this for much longer or he'll think he's got a soft one.
  15. I think you sound like you're trying your best to dodge it when really you know what the outcome will be. I get it. No one likes refunding. In your first post you said "shortly after" he took the vehicle he registered the fault with you. Therefore it wasn't caused in the 5,000 miles he's done, so that's the wear and tear argument out, I think. Personally, and we've badly managed a few complaint, I'd do what you suggest and offer a refund minus some for the miles he's used it and put it down as a lesson just to get the car back for inspection whenever a genuine sounding fault like this appears not long after sale.
  16. Everyone I know is complaining about the same thing. Stocking will be the main issue for the next 3-4 years, as I see it. It'll definitely result in some casualties.
  17. If you're buying late late stuff online is fine otherwise you have to buy in person and no you can't trust the auctions full stop.
  18. 117K 207 my first thought is: it's finished. The knocking is likely from any part that relies on oil pressure, big ends etc. Is it worse when warm? Guessing that's why it was super cheap; some traders heard the knock you didn't... or they were just put off by the miles.

    As above really but the curiosity would be there to see this damage from a ''falling'' object. My bet is the argument starts falling apart when you see the photos...
