  1. This is a good point and what I've been thinking about. I have noticed prices at the lower end sub £5k actually going up. Cars we would have retailed at £1995 now £2295. Cars that we're £2495 now £2995. I wonder whether it's a case of we have to adopt or be left behind; it just doesn't feel right paying more money for cars I bought cheaper a year ago. The risk is paying more and prices drop, left with a forecourt full of then overpriced cars. I think I'll wait a bit longer before deciding.
  2. Best trading month ever last month. Sold one so far this month - a £600 Skoda px. Go figure. Back on the beans on toast
  3. This is the key! Most important questions are "So, why are you getting rid of it?" and "does it have any issues I need to be aware of?". Then watch the eyes and body language! Part time car trader part time lie detector!
  4. Used to? Sounds a sweet deal - where's he based?
  5. I don't have hard and fast rules like this when it comes to selling. For me every deal is very different and you need to tailor the approach to the character you're dealing with. I will say that test driving their car is always a brilliant way to level them out though
  6. Great idea. I had a couple buy a car off me - I mean, lovely old couple. They had their car pretty much written off with MOT repairs. Bear in mind it was a Seicento that apparently needed £1200 worth of repairs and they had made them renew all the shocks the year before at £500+ and replace the front brakes for £350! This garage then bought the car off them for £30. It wasn't the first time they had done this and then their car had appeared on their front a few weeks later for sale. I checked the MOT report, heard a few more stories and was half tempted to report them on their behalf.
  7. Hahahahah. I knew that'd push you over the edge! Can't take criticism can you? Most on here can't when they pitch their 'ideas'. My point was if you have an idea I'd suggest a thorough business plan first then explaining it rather than 'do you reckon I can sell some cars for dealers and take £250 lol lol cash cash?' then getting pissy when it's ripped apart.
  8. Just CAP clean? They get more than that at auction if they're any good. People do not trust and will not pay "private sale/ retail money" from an auction type site. That's what retail sites offering warranties etc are for. Anyway, isn't there a site for this already anyway? (eBay). Hope you still have some space on the back of that fag packet?
  9. Why would they bother when they're getting top money and no fees at auctions?
  10. Good luck - wouldn't touch a 170 with a barge pole. I've known people throw a fortune at these symptoms on this engine and still not solve it
  11. Cheers for the link. Hopefully it's enough money, I mean that seriously, Tesla nearly broke Elon. I think it'll probably be a decent thing and you have to respect him for wanting to have a go.
  12. You wouldn't want to. My business partner sold his personal car from home the other week. So much more caution from people - rightly so, but he said it was a complete ballache. 10x what you get on a forecourt.
  13. We had a 2.8 v6 come in on px. Non stop phonecalls to my complete surprise
  14. 7 this week. Flying. But 1 last week. Ups and downs as Umesh said
  15. I have to say, not aimed at you Jimbo, but I'm bored shitless of AT threads. AT is going to the dogs. Any advertising business that starts chucking away free adverts to bolster it's stock is on it's arse. In answer to your question I'm not sure but can you afford to take the risk of upgrading and it not working? For me the fact they're now scaring already poorly profitable dealers into upgrading which chews away what's left of their profits for little to no additional return is sickening business practice. Not to mention they're not providing their users (buyers) the best possible deal and making that easiest to find should be their priority otherwise they go elsewhere. For me, if it doesn't work and you get better ROI elsewhere cancel it. If you're not getting calls anywhere maybe it's something else. Link us to an advert if you need an opinion?
  16. "even brake pad replacements are rare because regenerative braking returns energy to the battery, significantly reducing wear on brakes" So, the brake pad comes in contact with the disc creating friction and because this friction generates kinetic energy which is returned to the battery it reduces wear on the pad. Does anyone else smell something...?
  17. I've always thought that if everyone stuck to CAP retail rather than focusing on making theirs 'the cheapest on..." then we'd all have a better time of it. It's slightly contradictory that some dealers moan about customers always low balling them but the same people make their business completely cost-centric. I mean, YES
  18. My head hurts from trying to sell on a px cheap today. Listed all the tiny faults (bit of paintwork flake and a noisy locking actuator). Jesus, the people. £50 deposit and hold for a week... no. Checking the lights work... really? Two test drives... you've been out once! Why is it so cheap? Because I'm not greedy and I want a small profit and the space freed up. How can you explain to someone you're not trying to rip them off and it's a sweet little car? Answer: you can't. You're a car dealer and as a result scum of the earth.
  19. Did okay today. Had to pay for them but complete minters. Drive back, clean, photo, advertise - magic! A break from the norm!
  20. My folks steam the carpets in their house; seems to do a nice job. A good wet vac is the tried and tested in my experience. We've got an older version of one of these bad boys: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Numatic-Car-Wash-Valet-Carpet-Seat-Upholstery-Vacuum-Cleaning-Cleaner-Shampooer-/271875235258?epid=1361108436&hash=item3f4d06ddba:g:x4QAAOSwBLlVWywZ
  21. Unless stated on the invoice it's your responsibility to collect the car - get it built into your terms on the reverse. I take it the light has come back on? Does he have a local friendly independent that might fix it and not cost the earth?
  22. The first and last one I bought had receipts for 4 boxes. I guess they'd sell okay though
  23. Absolutely same story - except we had a decent start to the month We did sell one today though. Almost didn't happen when he entered his pin wrong three times and blocked his card. Seemed deliberate. Said he'd go home and transfer it. Ohh no sunshine. We ended up driving him to the town centre to get the cash out at the bank
  24. Yup. Had an otherwise nice old chap the other week telling me he was chopping his Ford Focus 1.8 TDCI because it has SPORT on the back and his insurance was too high because of this. I realised I was being told a tale when he let slip his son was a mechanic and he'd done the belts on it 6 months ago (why invest that money? what has gone wrong to make him want to shift it on?) but decided to play along and give him some advice about his "local, convenient, no hold music" insurance company. He comes back that Saturday without his Focus saying I'd promised him £700 for it (his requested px value which I didn't attempt to knock). What I actually said was if it's as he says and checks out on a test drive I'd give him £700. Anyway, he brings it back and I do a test drive and I miss the whistling it's balls off turbo. I realise the turbo is knackered when I use it to deliver his new Octavia later that day; not that it really mattered because his car was worth £1700 so we were able to knock it onto someone in the know who'd do the work and still make a profit. I couldn't be bothered. The poor chap clearly felt so guilty he wouldn't let me leave until he gave me a tenner for delivering it to go and have a drink on him, gave me a hug and a box of sweets for my brother's kids. I felt like I'd kind of done a good deed when I helped him do his tax online and he had me do the sums on his account from an ATM print out and he had £400 left in the bank... Suppose the moral is in desperate times it's every man for himself.
