Motor traders with a personality. I swear to God everyone on my Facebook and that I'm vaguely connected to is starting a car sales business. A guy with a courier firm, some double glazing fella, the guy that does carpet cleaning, a musician, the ice cream man... seriously? It's not that I'm afraid of the competition it's just stay in your fucking lane. I don't come and start pouring out Mr Whippy's calling myself Soft Icie when times are hard thinking the grass is greener do I? Not to mention they're drips. All of them. Poncing around on their social media page telling you how "cool" their Mini Cooper Clubman is and how they take it home every night because it's their favourite of the 3 shitboxes they own. They pay garages labour by the hour.. retail!!? They come up to you in auction "how much do you spend on this" "where's best to advertise" "how many cars do you sell" "why do you think my red 13 plate corsa 1.2 with no air con for £5k hasn't sold?" "should I offer finance because I'm selling 3 cars a month" "look I built this website in C++ Python dick code aren't I good?". No. Just fuck off. After a month or so they get their first screamer. Immediate refund. No questions asked. Please don't harm my precious reviews. "We really went above and beyond for that client". What? You're flogging cars on Facebook from a bit of space you rent in an oversized car park. Where are the sheepskin coats and that guy that smokes a pipe? An auction and the motor trade shouldn't be a welcoming place. It wasn't when we started. Now it's a creche.

I never really buy and sell cars on eBay so this may well be common. So, I decided to have a look on eBay as I'm struggling to find what I am looking for. Saw one of my own cars with my pictures and text listed at about 5k less than I was asking! Reports it to Ebay obviously. A couple of weeks later I am looking again. There is front of me, absolutely what I want. Cheap, but not suspiciously cheap. FSH, Low miles, 2 owners. £21500. Retail value around £25000 so its in the negotiable range. So, I contact the seller. In the Isle of Man. Ok, not perfect. So, I emailed and said, ok I can come to collect the vehicle if you let me have it for £20500. By this time I have got the reg, chassis no etc of the car and it checks out on HPi Seller emails me back, I have a better idea, due to this, that and the next thing... we will do it all via PayPal, pay after delivery and Uship, you can have it for £20500 and I will also pay the shipping and if its not as described you have 5 days to send the car back and the money is returned. Nobody caves in like that and offers that sort of deal. A couple of other things had already made me think already it wasn't right, I am now pretty sure its a scam. But I thought I will play along. It went right down the line. Authentic PayPal invoice with the absolutely correct text, logos and a live help button which took you through to a live person who was pretty good. The thing that really threw me was that they had my correct PayPal address. God knows how they got that. The main give away, apart from the fact I already knew it was fake, was they were actually to quick and efficient and when you phoned the help number they pronounced the word live as live as in living. Anyway, I also found the car on Autotrader. I would not have noticed it previously as it was way overpriced. A private punter has it up for sale at £29500 (good luck with that!!) so I phoned him and sure enough he is genuine and the car is in Cornwall.

You're a customer looking to buy a car? If so, none. They will deem the car rubbish in my experience, and it will be a waste of the seller's time, and your money. Find a sensible mechanic and take him with you, if you must.

The thing is, you cant always tell who is wasting your time. I had an email enquiry last week which was a part ex lead through AT, Details of car, I looked it up on dvla MOT history, it had failed its MOT a week before on corrosion. I called the customer, she said, 'I might come down saturday, but I havent seen one of these (my car) before, and I'm on holiday in a week so not in a rush to buy, probably make my mind up when I'm back in 2 weeks'. She rings on saturday morning to say 'I'm on the way'. I'm not full of hope on this but still do it right - check theres a bit of fuel in it, clean it off, all paperwork ready to inspect. She turns up, and asks about the price on her p/ex, which she hasnt brought with her (for obvious reasons, but she still hasnt told me that). I just say I wouldnt want it because of the MOT fail. So we take my car out for a drive, little haggle on return, deposit taken and car has gone this morning. So from someone who knew nothing about my car, and was telling me she wouldnt be buying on the day(or even in the next fortnight) to fully paid and gone within 48 hours. It would've been really easy to dismiss this out of hand. Unless youre really busy or taken the AD route, give them all a chance. they will let you down. But sometimes they will (pleasantly) surprise you. Sometimes the lies they tell you are good ones!

Quite a common scam saying it's on the Isle Of Man. Just tell them you happen to be in Douglas and can be there in 5 minutes. Another one is they are on an gas rig but can get it delivered to you.

Lazz you've hit the nail exactly on the head. I do sail far too close to the wind, then when work is dead there's no backup. Honestly it rarely gets me down, but this pass week I've let it get the best of me. Going to go out now and polish the hell out of the cars, video every single one of them as best I can, and try and get my mindset right. Hopefully will get some sensible people this week.

Give it a week or so after you sell it & we'll get a tasty refund thread. They sound like right dicks. Can't wait.

Thank you for starting what has to be the best thread I have seen on here. Never has a topic made me reminisce as much as this and fucking belly laugh too. I tell you what though, there aren't many jobs like this one..... the highs and the lows, what a fucking ride. I do miss all those proper old traders/dealers, if they liked you they would tell/show you a few tricks and it was like finding gold dust. The one about the white dog poo...…… LOL LOL LOL

That's very good basic business sense . My sales techniques offer more advice about the days weather than the car . They will decide to buy from you or not , let them choose . Answer questions with a very short yes or no eg "how many services ? , the answer is 6 " NOT 1 at BMW in , 2 at jack spratts garage on and 3 more at John jones but it needs another in 3,000 miles . , details kills sales because who your talking to doesn't understand anything about a cars working . Q ;Has the chain been replaced? , Answer is "the chain on this car is absolutely fine" because they are not looking for it to be changed but they've read on google that the chain goes wrong , so assurance is needed in their mind that this one is no problem . Be sure its ok though of course , reputation is important

Underseal black, up to nearly door handles ! i got a sahara beige cortina, blacked up to halfway, rest looked suspiciously very clean, took a gallon of petrol and washed it all off, [ no smoking ! ] then t cut it and polish and only found a few rust spots on the sills which were re blacked, made a bucket of money out of it, he who dares kiwi on the vinyl top ? steam clean the engine then just take off the dizzy cap and blow it out ? [ i have would preferred to have seen it before you washed it, er, no you wouldn't ] so heres one for you ? whats cu1000 ? give you a clue, its advertising .
