    Good lad! I found my personal lack of mechanical knowledge and back up to be my biggest downfall when I started out so having that support around you will stand you in good stead. youll get lots of support from the chaps on here with your positive and sensible posts so keep it up. dealer auction.... buy with caution! id be sourcing cars via your Dads customers if poss!

    Lets get this right, he has an established petrol station and workshop with a bit of space you can sell cars from and your asking if you can make it work? This sounds like a dream come true for some on here.

    Yes, get the car back to your mechanic. We sold a 2002 Honda S2000 a couple of years ago with full Honda serv hist 93k. Broke a con-rod and made nice hole in the side of engine. Customer wanted a full refund. I employed the services of ACE Inspection engineers who reported that the valves had bounced off the piston heads immediately before engine failure (physically marked) . Their report stated that the driver had probably mis-selected a gear and over-revved the engine causing the failure. Customer collected the car with tail between his legs and got it repaired elsewhere at his own cost. Don't give up too early...

    I sold a CLK35O in January to a guy, in March I get a text saying gearbox had a problem and it needs a £980 repair. I said, no problem return it to me (as per our contract) and I’ll get it inspected. It’s passed six months, nothing heard since Well, what’s life without a bit of mitigation.....

    I think it’s fair to say you don’t need a pdi to confirm that clouds of white smoke and sudden loss of oil pressure weren’t present at the point of sale mate. The fault has developed, clearly but it’s evident the car isn’t fit for purpose or of satisfactory quality. Are you getting at that the customer needs to accept a repair? I can see how that would hold up, definitely.

    Meddle? It’s a 2 minute addition to transferring the ownership to them online. In fact it’s on the same bloody page as the transferring of ownership. No idea why you wouldn’t do it other than pure stubbornness.

    Not really. They were shoved off the OP’s pitch because the boyfriend started asking annoying questions. Annoying as they may be, they haven’t done anything wrong. You couldn’t even claim they have cost you money, OP sold the car 2 hours later. I wouldn’t be running round to get them it back but withholding it would be wrong in these circumstances.

    9 times out of 10, I tax online for customers, they appreciate the added value and costs me nowt. I then sort the V5 when they've left - again Online.

    Believe me- you will definitely have lots of free time on your hands (once you've bought some stock and had in prepared). Most of my time is now taken up on the phone/computer/internet/ipad etc. We'd all love to have a second string to our bow, and on on-site side-by-side mechanical business is ideal in my opinion. I think you'd be crazy not to get on board there too with a successful and established business. The car game is very hard indeed. Especially in the first couple of years. Good luck with it al though and everyone on here will happily help with sensible questions etc. I would just hover over your dad and do the receptionist/booking in work etc and speaking to the customers and taking the money, until your dad feels like taking his foot of the gas a bit more.

    I think the plan for the weekend is to take payment for the car, then go on line to tax it. "I cant believe DVLA are closed, thats never happened before" "Do you want to drive the car now or come back on Monday for it?"

    As you say, worth finding a way of nabbing them mate, despite what some people think about punters who use this method of contact, there are def some proper leads and conversions.

    LIKE.... When you haved a built up pot its easier to cope with the bollocks... Yes, it is very rewarding making your own way, but it isn't easy and you need determination. I sell around a 150 cars a year which gives me an above average comfortable income, however its taken 30 years and the shit never goes away. The thing is I love the job, I'm a wheeler dealer at heart........ Always looking for a deal...

    This Dealer Auction merger stuff could just be a smokescreen. Cox/Manheim own Autotrader in the US.Autotrader UK are hugely profitable and a household name.Autotrader shares have been rising steadily since May.This could be the forunner to a takeover bid if this merger is allowed.Manheim have been outplayed by BCA and could be rebranded i.e.Auto Trader Auction Group and do extra sales for private punters.They could also do stuff like Auto Trader Buy Your Car etc .BCA bought nearly 300,000 cars through WBAC in the last year making big profits.BCA will be following this with interest,they could also bid for Auto Trader.........Course I might be talking crap,maybe the Cox Head of External Relations can advise us of the ‘ synergies’ in this merger.
