Had one yesterday. On the phone asked if the Jag X type we have for spares/ repairs has service history and warranty. No, can I come and look at it, I'm in the trade too, No. Goodbye. To much stress on a Friday. Car is £395 with mot until November. Needs discs & pads. WTF. Getting too blunt in my old age......

I can think of misunderstandings.A long time ago we used to get high spec ex Bass breweries Rover 600’s out of Mansfield.I think they were £46-£4700 and were good sellers. One Saturday morning we are busy and we get a transporter delivery. Our main salesman says to me ‘how much was that Rover that’s just getting dropped off’.I reply something like ‘it was cheap, just under 4 grand.Later on in the day I find out that when he had asked,he had a punter on it.The idiot sold it for £3950 instead of the usual price £5950.To say I blew a head gasket was an understatement because in those days we did not just press a button to buy stock,we were constantly up and down motorways early mornings or late at night trying to buy stock.....still rankles.

Lady went into the parts department asking for some 710 for her engine. Think about it.

Plodding on at a few per week, I’d rather chase £s than units sold. My problem is selling a few sticky ones and replacing stock, but that’s an age old problem. I will say though that email & phone enquiries have certainly picked-up but unfortunately this week they are virtually all of the unwelcome variety - absolute tossers, the penniless, the greedy and, of course, the unrealistically fussy.

The best advice here. And if you repeatedly screw up & can’t trust your gut, get out of this game.

3 or 4 years ago I got a Peugeot 206 rear quarter filled up with a bucket of filler & the whole car painted pink for £300. I kid you not, although I have to confess it was far from the best job & the weed smoking imbecile is no longer in business. I suspect this isn’t much help to you.......

if you dont put the pearlescent on at the same angle that the factory did you will not get it to match it also needs the correct undercoat colour usually a dark red not an easy colour to get right,my painter would want to paint a whole side if theres bits all this takes time and motor traders expect perfection at trade price this usually cant happen so its either pay the rate or accept compromise

Don’t bog yourself down with this nonsense. for example, I have had a bumper May and June yet my fellow traders are having a mare. My average time in stock is 20 days, what bollocks this is. I sold a Passat in 6 hours and have a BMW for 86 days - the average means Jack. you just have to trial and error - for example, I will never buy a Fiat 500 again (time in stock), never another Land Rover (cost to prep and warranty), never an odd ball colour, etc etc. Averages are a pointless exercise, look for problem cars and avoid them. Above all, go and buy some bloody stock instead of looking at stats which are skewed by large franchise dealers whom offer supported finance, extended warranties, service plans etc (all stuff you can’t). Whilst you’re wasting time looking at stats you’re earning diddly. Buy something you might make a few quid or lose a few quid but at least you’ll be doing something meaningful and learn something tangible.

3 Stage pearls are not that much more expensive. Its a fraction more. You just need to find somewhere to send regular work to and build up a relationship. There are good trade painters everywhere but they don't advertise its all word of mouth and they are all in demand. Plenty of bad quiet ones that can fit you in quickly.

Paint is the same price regardless of what it is at my local paintshop.. he's having your kecks down. £100 a panel is what we pay for everything. Look for someone on Facebook who wants cash in hand jobs, they will work for much less than this guy is willing too.

    £150 for a bumper - perhaps allow another £50 if it’s a technical job?

you need to make the customer take a step forward and show his intent. you produce a pen and paper you ask him for his phone number [ hes asked you enough questions] you ask him what he wants you narrow it down to colour mileage age price if it is possible that you could meet his requirements [ ie you can make money] then you offer to "source" this vehicle you ask him if hes willing to leave a holding deposit, if he is, all good, if he isnt, then you cant help him, goodbye
