    Do people actually pay thousands more to buy the exact same car from a dealer rather than a private seller?

    Because you should have known the answer to your own question really . Private ; un loved filthy cars , scratches on paint , stained seats , missing bits , bald tyre , wheel scuffs , missing key , short MOT , needs Service , and fumigating . How do i know this , because we get PX cars from privates and i haven't seen a good one in ten years . Dealer ; Polished , prepped inside , seats carpets cleaned , Mats replaced , Serviced , Wheel scrapes repaired , warranted , New MOT , two keys , No obnoxious smells . This Asif is called a JOB and done correctly it provides a great service supplying cars that people can buy and enjoy owning . So moral of this is . Private is a risk and unless your good at mechanics , deep cleaning cars , and traveling the country looking at scrap sold by liars , USE a garage instead . Now that's not cocky is it , just true

    Yes, people will. But thats because its far from "The Exact Same." The extra processes that dealers put the cars through is the added value, as are the services that you can offer, that a private buyer does not and cannot.

    This young guy just arrived from over 100 miles away , no call , just turned up . rang the number on our door , " Hi I'm outside come to see the Golf you have " So we lets him in , there's the car , he wants to test drive it . Need a deal setting up first my friend I say , as hes mentioned a PX outside . 56 Plate 112,000 miles Zetec S in white , Bit Rare he goes so don't look at yer values on this one , I want decent money for it . " Wont be buying the Golf then one thinks " HPI /Experian reveals his car was born BLUE then changed to WHITE in 2010 , Its also got 14 previous owners , all odd tyres at 2mm , MATT Paint , Wrapped Bonnet , Kerbed wheels No History , says hes had 3 years but he'd had it March 2020 . What do want for it then i says 3k mate he goes I printed CAP and autotrader out for him £270 & £295 came out , so how do you value it 3k then , Cos i need that for the deposit on finance . Its not how it works though , tried explaining but he didn't actually get it , had zero concept that his car had a value based on ,condition , service history ,Provenance age and miles . He argued the fact that he wanted 3k for it based on the requirement of a deposit to get the payments down to what he could afford . Plus he had driven 100 + miles to get the golf . But you cant afford it I say based on what i can give you for the Fiesta . Its not rare , its been to friendly with to many owners , its not been serviced , its changed colour , it wants scrapping . Go sell it yourself . "Tried mate no one rang bout it " mmmmm wonder why Whats best you can do on my car then he asks now realising the reality of the valuation system . £50 i say his mate says that's what that other guy said Hes gone to sell it himself , rare cars those old school Zetec S 's , be zero tread on tyres now as he wheel spun down the road They have NO Clue nowdays at all , I remember being 11 yrs old and knowing cars had values based on condition .

    I think ironically its your ceiling that is actually our floor, based on the fact you sell cars at private prices and we sell at retail.

    Trading illegally surely not! Asif is clearly a good citizen paying the vat on his margins and declaring his income to HMRC and paying the tax due on said income. Doing the right thing to contribute to repaying the tax payer coffers that have helped our society thus far through the pandemic, and I am sure as a responsible trader he is selling his car on fully serviced with full mot and at least six months warranty.

    Its health and safety at fault . Fences round this , Signs up for that , Don't walk here or there , Cant climb trees , Cant climb ladders , Cant pick weights up , Must wear hard hats , Put gloves on , Ear defenders on for hoovering the lounge and a thousand rules that we grew up without So all these PC restrictions save the lives of all the idiots and brainless wallies that would otherwise of perished years ago aged 16 ish wandering about aimlessly in life getting squashed and falling off cliffs etc . These people have now had kids , this is the problem as these kids were born stupid , been bought up stupid , and are among us in society breathing oxygen and getting confused about all sorts of things we knew about years ago growing up , Health and safety is at fault i tell you , its allowed fools to breed , we are now feeling the effect .

    So much truth in this! Parenting ability or lack thereof has a lot to answer for in todays society. Always someone else's fault though......

    The teachers get 30 kids for 25 hours a week, the parents get a lot less kids for 143, I feel the blames lays at home in most cases.

    Buy better , sell well . learning that lesson takes a while both ways if i'm honest , I'm 40 years in and a dab hand at both in fact I'm pin sharp , but lessons along way took some remembering , it wont come to you next week or even next year my friend , but when it does your wallet will smile , till then you will run on empty for a while . Just like we all did . Put the work in , have fun learning , it will come as you learn .

    I certainly remember 45 years ago when I had my first site, people turning up with cars hand painted in red oxide asking what I will give them for it when it is done up.

    Anyone who has spent enough time in auction houses will know the extra tomato ordered at the counter is a blag and often ends up in the bin outside the cafe. sorry slighly off topic the extra tomato threw me, to answer the op you will never match a main dealer price and there margin isnt as big as some would think it is. It has nothing to do with adding services, people whom like to buy from main dealers used section are buying a lifestyle choice no more no less.

    If you're making that sort of margin after tax and VAT you are doing well and don't need to change anything.     thats the little bugger, last one i had made a loud clicking noise when you remove the feed to it the noise went away. yuck did i mention i hate these things.

    I would not describe that as knocking or banging. I suspect something switching in/out causing change in load or AFR - A/C, cooling fan or maybe check EVAP system. That doesn't look like coils/plugs or broken valve springs etc. Carefully check vacuum/intake system and any solenoids etc. Check PS also.

    Best one we had, fair play to the guy, asked us for a valuation on p/x so we just sent him WBAC value and said we’d match it. He got offended and sent us back the WBAC valuation of the car we was selling ,which was less than half of retail, and said that was all he wanted to pay for ours then.
