100% - buy from a dealer and have confidence that you will hold their hand if something genuinely fails.

Agreed. I tell my customers at the POS that I treat people how I like to be treated myself and that if they work with me, I will bend over backwards to help. I cover wear and tear (my choice) becuase I do believe for example, that a clutch, by its very nature a wear and tear item, should last beyond my 3 month warranty, same for brakes, exhausts, batteries etc.  Everything but tyres IMO.  Only time I dig my heels in is when a customer starts to rant, call me dodgy (or atleast suggest) or threatens me or my business in any way.

This has only happened 3 times.

A Volvo where two garages (including a specialist found no fault)

A Passat that had a free health check at VW (I sent legal letter to VW dealer principal who said the car was "dangeous." 13 main agent stamps, never had an advisory, new MOT) Ended up costing me £50 for a new "spare" key.  The only legitimate observation from the health check.

A Mini woman who would call at any time day or night ranting about the bag of shit.

Worst of all, a rejection on a Vauxhall from a greedy customer who completely knew what they were buying and why it was cheap, said I would never hear from them again.....until it developed a fault a couple of weeks later.

They were better than the later ones for sure , the later turbo ones are a lot less reliable . We have done the same and sold no end of Cooper S turbo ones and the JCW 's but they have all required Chains , Tensioners , Turbo Pipes , Piston Rings , De Cokes , just to name a few, not high miles either . .

rattle chains tensioners, common on the face lift car with the hams hall engine, this was a recall in the u.s.a, but typically here bmw said no recall.

I havent messed with the R56 n14/n18 yet but suppose with the times moving at some point i will have to suck it up and buy one. No doubt i will have my issues with them as well such a shame we do really well on the minis and becoming our specialty but i wish there where more reliable.

SIX Hours to buy a £1,600 car and then try doing you for £4,000 repairs .

I think a scam smells of a piss take to me , who on gods earth travels 3 hrs one way for a £1,600 car :o unless its been done before and to take a dollar off the trader in question

Calls you on way home to start the bad news bit then hit you with a 4k repair bill , she must be taking something to get that high  smells of Bull Shite to me

Suppose only you knows the car though , so was it a pile or not ? could be the question . If it wasn't a scrapper  i would be on my bike to find the car and her .

I had this once with a nice guy from 250 miles away , bought a SLK from me rang me up after 30 mins to say the rear Diff had gone but the AA were taking him home  bearing in mind he was tone DEAF , Merc quoted £5,000 to replace , so i said NO worries my son is down your way and he's a very talented tech , My lad was there in less than 25 mins , Guess what No Problems at all ,  NO AA recovery receipt, NO Whinging Diff when my lad drove it . NO Merc quote , We rang Merc and they said they hadn't heard of that reg either , Thieving scoundrel , He got the biggest roasting from my lad ever , then he got me on the phone too .  I invoiced him £300 for the inspection  and then sent a court claim when he didn't pay it , then the bailiffs, he got a CCJ for his trouble :) because he ran out of time  and they collected over £800 in the end .

Moral of this is ; GO AND FIND THE CAR if you know its good .

That's a beautiful story. Love it, what a lying scumbag. (The customer, not you!)

We add our value in the sourcing and prep for retail, describing it honestly and accurately and honouring any repairs our responsibility as per the CRA.

Offering a warranty which covers wear n tear is above our responsibility and of course your choice Rory if you want to do that.

But when I’m selling a 3k 10 year old with a 150k on the clock, a car which is 7 years past the manufacturers warrant period, the customer has to understand you are not selling it with 6 months of free repairs and maintenance. If they want that then they should find the remaining 30k and buy a new one.

AD I thought you'd taken to offering a warranty now? Or do you not warrant certain cars? (Which would make complete sense in the example you gave)

£4k is possible with dealer parts and £120 per hour Labour plus vat...15hr labour...

Or the mechanic is fobbing too For parts and work that isnt needed.

I remember I went to an exhaust place once and they did the usual mechanic works. Anyways they were keen on pads for every customer.

Alternatively it is possible to give customers a breakdown costs of parts and labour.

Parts from euros or gsf usually come with a whooping 60% discount. If you give them a breakdown and even retail mechanic rates it would come in it at a fraction of the £4k!

And to rub it in... Tell them "you can go on gsf or euros website enter the reg number and click on the parts you need and the discount code is at the top. You can see for yourself"

When a punter threatens Trading Standards,I used to say ,I agree let’s do this properly, please get in touch with them and when they contact us ,I will take advice from them.I am sure we will then resolve the matter.

Most Trading Standards guys are straight forward although I have not dealt with any for a long time.

So thanks for all your advice on this.

Finally got the car back on Sunday due to both our schedules not lining up it took a while. I will say the clutch is well and truly F*CKED not sure if they have damaged it intentionally or if genuinely bad i dont recall it being this bad on the test drive or when i drove it. Im not sure how they even made it back up tbh.

Checked over her garages list of 'issues' i think i would maybe agree to the front brake discs being a little bit worn but nothing major.

Never the less new clutch back in it. New disks and pads all round. Bit of a clean up and we look good to go be back up for sale at the weekend. Might Advertise it for more as i know she has been watching my page since buying the car as she commented on a few other cars which had come and gone asking if she could have a look at them ......... NO THANKS TAKE YOUR REFUND OFF YOU GO.

I'm of a similar vein. Work with me, these are second hand cars not new, be reasonable and polite and I'll reciprocate in kind and bend over backwards.....or

Starting threatening legal this and that  being unreasonable and, then it's a no problem yes lets do this the formal and everything in writing from then on, as is fair for any defendant being taken to court.

This is very true treat others as you would like to be treated was the way I was always taught manners cost nothing .

Cant be as bad as mine last week. Customer was texting me regarding a squeaky CRV clutch.  She knows my mechanic so I text, "liase" with my mechanic regarding a suitable time for you both. Came out as "you liar" due to predictive texting.  Fortunately I know her fairly well, she didn't take offence.

Your mechanic should be able to tell you if it was burnt out on purpose by the colour of the clutch plate.

Couldnt call it either way tbh there was loads of hot spots and literally no material left. He did say he was having trouble on the way up with some of the steep hills with the clutch slipping.

Id lean towards done on purpose but honestly i don't car anymore.

Made me smile but as you say predictive text is a pain sometimes and could have gone wrong with a new customer etc . At least you knew the good lady and she seen the funny side .

I was thinking my first thoughts were maybe having not even done intentionally on purpose but maybe due to bad driving who knows .

as you say pick up the pieces and move on
