Some dealers stopped buying diesel a year ago. A lot of customers still want them.

I am just outside London and I speak regularly with several dealer-friends, all based inside the M25. 

They all stopped buying diesel cars (in one case he doesn't even take them in p/x) in the last year or so. When we go to Blackbushe together they never go anywhere near a diesel. They look with amusement and utter dismay on some days when I buy 3-4 Diesels. I've paying under Cap Average and often under Cap Below and got some superb cars which two years ago would've sold in the hall for 110% of Cap Clean. I buy some EVs and hybrids too and take superb (priced) diesel p/exes against them.

I had my best October ever (actually my best month ever in October), best November ever and this December have sold 6 cars (expected 2 or 3 or even nothing in early Dec) and the phones ring quite a lot. Yes, mostly diesels. Some of them compliant with the 2019 London Ultra Low Emissions Zone, most of them not. Just sold a Merc CDI to a young lady from Croydon. "Yes heard the news about diesels. No, not bothered as I do high miles and a petrol simply won't do".

Is there a bit of a gap in the home counties market where some dealers don't stock oil burners AT ALL but 50% of the buyers still want them?

I live about 2 miles from the boundary of the new ULEZ. I sell diesels as well as petrol. If you live near the very centre of London ie within 5 miles of Big Ben then the emssion zone charge is the least of your worries. Parking is the most expensive issue. Although I am effectively a 'London' dealer I have punters travel from Kent and Suffolk/Herts to look at cars. Diesel economy is still hugely attractive.

It's only a matter of time before the 'emissions zone' cash cow will appear in other cities?

I'm off to the block on tuesday, and there's a very nice diesel I have my eyes on!

Based in North, selling mostly ex fleet diesels here. I've not noticed their prices drop, in fact I am paying more for them this year than last.

Been a good year to be fair, the demand is still there. 2015 Volvo diesel sold to London just last week.

A 2015 Volvo diesel will be Euro 6 and ULEZ compliant hence ideal for Londoners that need to upgrade for the new emissions zone :-)

I've just taken a 15 plate 35000 mile C220d Coupe in PX against a 11 Plate 85000 mile countryman Cooper S Petrol. Chap lives in the new ULEZ zone... seems a few are offloading, but i'll welcome them up here in Notts. I've had a few locals question diesel recently, as Nottingham are imposing a ULEZ before 2020 by all accounts.

Those punters who are obsessed with penny pinching (that means plenty of them) aren’t interested in petrols. All they see is a few more MPG & a slight saving on RFL. 

The death of the diesel is a long way off with my punters.

We're south east and switched heavily to petrol at the start of the year. 80% petrol but still do some diesels when it's appropriate, 4x4, estates etc. Motivation was all the media coverage and living near a 'green' city. I think if we were based north of the big smoke/somewhere rural we'd still be stocking lots of diesel.

End result is prep costs are down and post sale warranty/repair costs are substantially down...can't even remember the last time we had a turbo go pop or something needing a forced regen which is nice. Tempted fate a bit there...

If I had enough dollars, I would be in Devon myself (Salcombe to be precise) but certainly very near to Jurassic coast.

I do not like or understand city life, too busy, noisy and expensive.

You’re right. This is pretty much exactly my story too over the past two years-but I’ve also consciously avoided the German crap also (with the odd exception) The headaches have been minimal.

I have all diesel on hand! But I have to clear that sold none just because they are not on market (one car used to on market for a couple weeks), not because they are diesel. 

Btw, I bought a Mini yesterday. I found I like shopping more than selling! OMG!

Ultra Low Emmission Zone.I don’t understand,can someone explain.Traffic speed in central London ULEZ is 5mph and modern diesels are far less toxic than petrol at these speeds.So why does it make sense to allow residents living in the zone to use higher emission and inneficient petrol cars like a Mini Cooper without charge.I see taxis are exempt so could you not just register your car as a taxi.

I hear that a lot. I am a city dweller and it suits me. I don't care for the countryside, way overrated. Full of bugs and manure! Also, it's mostly owned by rich people.

I did think about moving to the seaside a few years back, but noisy, expensive and busy were words that I would use to describe that.

I've lived in London all my life, the air is cleaner. Stopping dumping waste and sewage into the Thames has also made that better too. I walk my dog by the Thames and guys are fishing. That's a good thing, isn't it?

There are other cities looking at the effects of ULEZ and wondering if they could do the same? Cleaner air and extra income, kerching or whatever you northerners say!
