Agreed. I push all my mechanical work on one garage and as a consequence I expect to be looked after. Nothing illegal of course I just don’t expect to have advisories that can be resolved with a wire brush and some hammerite.

Check EGR and boost pipes. IMV on fuel pumps are quite common too for poor idle. We saw a car this week that had just had 6 new diesel injectors supposedly and a ancient fuel filter still on it.....

If it’s a 320d efficientdynamics, the flywheels are very expensive. If it’s a 316d/318d they are much cheaper. It’s a very easy job to do on these cars. Despite what anyone says your DONT have to renew the clutch every time if there is still some meat left on it put it back in, you only want to sell it not get married to it. Fix it, and try and get some money back off them is what I’d say.

Don’t buy work & let those who want to go elsewhere, go. Shit should be valued as shit, simple. Half of the time they are so desperate to get out of their shed they’ll take almost anything but those who can’t afford to change unless YOU over allow should be allowed to walk away.

This. Personally I treat them the same as any other non fleet/finance car. One thing is for sure, it's one hell of a business model.

I use my head & advertised prices (courtesy of the internet). They’re as much use as a punter waving a Parker’s Guide in my face. Surely they only exist to assist the ‘suits & pointy shoes brigade’ main dealers valuing p/xs?

No longer use either, nothing in auctions brings cap and i rely on the internet for guides as to selling prices in my local area, I found the book was massively off when it came to selling prices, a quick google gives me a far better price guide. I think the only time it comes in handy is when your buying up in the value stuff and you have to price extras ect adjust for mileage, a 3k Clio is always going to be a 3K Clio.

how did i stop getting a failure/advise tomorrow? on the one that's booked in at ten ? well the front subframe was a peeling sheet of rust, cost? half a tin of satin black and a few hairs out of the wirebrush, £3, the n/s pads were stuck in caliper slightly, remove, brake clean aerosol, sliver of coppaslip, cost ? £1? n/s sidelight bulb black, obviously going to pop any minute, probably at test, cost? a 501 ? £1. total cost £5 plus 1 hours labour --------------------------------- without pdi = mot result= front brakes fail n/s sidelight out advise= front subframe corroded ---------------------------------- with pdi = pass no advisories --------------------------------- moral = havent got to go back to test station, [and the hour i spent doing these little jobs would have easily been taken up by going back to test station] i havent got a worrying advise on the test paper. why be a busy fool? just my thought

We've just switched MOT stations again for the umpteenth time. For us they mostly start off half sensible but the advisories always seem to increase month on month, quarter on quarter no matter what the car until you're convinced they think you're seeing their missus behind their back. It's so blatant it's as if they genuinely don't think we'll realise they're trying to milk us so hard. As for all this 'doing the job right because we're scared of inspections' what a load of old tosh. I know there must be some reputable firms out there (if anyone knows of any please let me know) but half of them are just getting in their monthly parts bonus or trading failures they buy on the side on facebook and gumtree, and you know they're not re-testing them quite so stringently when they've just bought them off a victim for £100. Apologies for the rant but I have yet to meet one that applies the same rules to his Brothers/Sisters/Uncles/Wives car as he does to mine or a young woman/elderly ladies.

I get your frustrations with the replies but your reply isn't going to help - not exactly "How to win friends and influence people"! Anyway, I guess alot of the responses are because there's a very similar discussion going on in another thread right now. As for my take, we don't use AT, so I'm not much help as we pay £0. We're eBay, Gumtree, Facebook, Cargurus and this great big lump of land called a forecourt.
