What to do when you cannot sell a car?
david gott replied to SK Motors's topic in General Dealer Chat
I couldn't agree more with this, I do really well with old, lowish mileage stock, I tend to sit on them for longer waiting for the right customer, bought a 53 plate Cmax in November £700 full ford history, 70k, sold it today for £1700. However I've had a fiat 500 63 plate, lovely colour, 29k miles bought for 5k a month ago, haven't had much interest and I know I'm going to have to reduce it soon, I'll probably make more on the Cmax. -
No not yet but he's had it back once already and is losing confidence, think I might be better off just giving him his money back and then sorting it myself

Sold a Cmax 2.0 diesel to a chap in nottingham, car runs great but evey now and again the car cuts out and major engine malfunction comes up on the dash, I'm assuming it's something to do with the clocks, can anybody recommend somebody around Nottinghamshire? I'm in Sheffield and he's not to keen bringing it back here

It's a strange old game, especially when you only have a couple of cars on the go it can stress you out thinking what am I doing wrong etc, but if you can get some more stock it will keep you busy and will take your mind off the ones that have been sat a little longer. -
Done 15, a couple were cheap part exes. Got 2 rolling into Feb that'll get me off to good start. My best month since I began 2 years ago profit wise, bought a couple of vans on a wim, one turned out to be the most I've ever made on a sale and only had the van a week.

Thankyou for posting that Mat, makes me feel a little bit better, the mechanic started calling me boomerang motors there were that many were coming back it's Sod's law, nature of the beast, etc, good to know you've got a sense of humour that's the most important outlook in situations like this! Hope it all works out ok for you!

I've had a mini park lane for months, 79k, decentish history, new mot etc etc, paid 2600, in the end I reduced it from 3695 to 2995, got fed up looking at it and still took a while to go at that price, the exact same model with the same mileage with no history made £2700 on DA, I know it's not a crazy price but I suppose if you're on a bit of a roll and selling you can get carried away and it feels like you can ride that wave forever.

I need to use a delivery company for 2 cars, it's all a bit new to me as I've always went for them myself or used the Valeter, Ive entered the jobs and movex recommended £35 so just ticked the box for that, only had one quote all day and its £95 for a 43 miles job! Is this about right? Would people recommend movex or someone else? Thanks, David

The Volvo part ex went this weekend to 2 chaps doing a screwball rally across Europe, they took it for £750 I knocked 250 off because it was for charity, nice when you get an interesting deal like that!

Grant I'm on a busy road aswell and most Saturday's I'll get a few walk ons, last Saturday, nothing! Not even a phone call, funny old game!

20 - 25 cars can it be done on your own
david gott replied to david gott's topic in General Dealer Chat
Tbh I don't want to get another person, the last 2 people who have worked with me just havent got the drive or desire that's required, everything seems a chore and they never really do it like you would yourself, it's just the running about that's going to be a pain! -
Just has the valet/car picker up/odd job/mechanic ring up to say he’s had enough of working in the motor trade and is off to work an office job, my wife isn’t too happy she’s just about to give birth next week and we were counting on this young chap to look after things whilst up to our necks in nappy’s. Just wondered if anybody out there is comfortably running a car business with 20 – 25 cars on their own and their wife/partner hasn’t left them?

Thanks for that Rory, I stock 20 - 23 and if can get a few at my house 25

I'm on 4 after today but still feels a bit flat here as well! just took in part ex a Volvo x reg, soft top, 100k but quite clean, recent mot, wanted to get the deal done so allowed £500 (normally would have offered 250 but chap wanted 700) never had one of these before was hoping to just trade on and get my £500 back, are these good news?

Just had my first bad experience with a dealer auction seller, long story short, drove all the way from South Yorkshire to the north east, car wasn't as described, no mention of an engine management, or the steering light was on and may have a steering issue.......... to be honest I should have known when in the description it said payment required before pick up, no refunds given once driven away, no mechanical checks made, allow £200 for any repairs. They accepted the rejection of sale but what gets my gripe is 5 mins earlier whilst waiting in the reception the salesman was ripping an old chaps part ex to shreds telling him every intricate detail of what was wrong with his car but when putting an ad on dealer auction Couldn't even mention the Christmas tree dash!!!!!! surely dealer auction need to introduce a feedback rating system, I've got my man going to Hertfordshire on Wednesday and don't want to have another episode like this!

How do you deal with 'holding deposits'?
david gott replied to Ocsltd's topic in General Dealer Chat
It's sods law you if you take the deposit this is what will happen........You will lose the other 2 customers, the chap who put the holding deposit comes to look at it, takes it for a test drives and rips it to shreds, asks for his deposit back, you then can't ring up the 2 previous customers because they will be thinking why didn't the other person not have it, there must be something wrong with it and you will end up stressing yourself out, just say to the 3 people, first come first serve, if you know it's a minter you'll be ok -
Any part ex that's got fuel in it, preferably one that I don't care about getting dirty, my neighbours must think I work in a scrap yard, I never seem to bring a car home newer than 2004 haha

I thought it was a great idea at first, then when an ecu problem cropped up on a silver check it eventually got sorted so I didn't think it was too bad even though I had to go through hoops to get sorted, then I had a bronze check gearbox bearing problem, complete waste of time, they said the bearings aren't covered. My argument is if they had gave me a refund, I would have only went and spent my cash at the next auction. Surely getting a warranty should be out of choice, ok if you decide to buy online you are making that choice but if you are buying a car from Manheim and it seems 80% of the cars have surecheck then you have to pay, it's like going for a meal and then at the end the meal a £20 add on has been given for the chef making sure your fish has no bones.

Customer comes to look at car, gives it the full tyre kicking once over and spends about an hour appraising, goes for a test drive, comes back and says "I'll have a think" "got a few more to see" etc. Then in the same afternoon another customer comes to look at the same car, takes 2 mins to appraise and doesn't even want to test drive and says "can I take it today"........2 days later the first customer rings and says "can I come and see the car again".......then you can reply with the sweet feeling of victory (I think sometimes I pause a minute just to get that feeling of satisfaction) "SORRY ITS SOLD"
-
You go to pick up the recent purchase, get in, turn key.......full tank of fuel

For the last 2 weeks I've just stuck to 3% credit card, 1% debit, free for a bank transfer, nearly all have done bank transfer. My last worldpay bill was ridiculous so I'm going to try and stick to my guns.

We have had the best start to a month for ages took 4 deposits and 4 sales since the weekend from a stock of 20, the hard bit now is not getting over excited and paying too much to replace the stock (like I always do, ha)

A small main dealer near where I live puts all their stuff on dealer auction, now what gets me is quite often they will retail the really nice cheapish part exes, low mileage, £2495 - £2995, this really puts me off buying any of their cars I see on DA, I think why aren't they selling it themselves etc. I've tried all the local dealers selling high end stuff hoping to get their cheaper stuff and that's been a success rate of 60% lemons and 40% decent, my best results are the auctions but it's a job in itself trying to get a good deal, love to know where Umesh gets all his bargains
