    Can I do better?

Can I quote my Close rep when he admitted to me that he went to see a large dealer in Bedfordshire who showed him a commission statement from Santander who were paying 12% commission for the prime customers. That dealership does not need a margin on their cars. Just volume.

Mine is just over half that. Still OK but not without a margin.

Hold on. 12% of the sale price ?

I do now too. Not because of bad reliability (that too!) but because I've sold so many of the things over the years - I can't stand them.

Back in 2009-2010 I was buying 2-3 year old very basic spec Astra Life 1.3 CDTI ex MoD cars from LEX in BCA Bedford. At 2-3 years old / 70-80K miles they were £2700-£3700 on the block and selling for £4500-£6K. They came with no reg numbers and needed registration with the DVLA as if it's a new car, logbook took weeks to arrive. Everyone else avoided them but they were quick sellers, always with new tyres and brakes, always fully serviced and almost always with a full tank of fuel.

I had 5 sets of photos for each colour (they were all silver, blue and 50 shades of grey) and instead of a number plate I had a plate that said DIESEL (huge selling point only a few years ago). When everyone else was struggling for stock after the scrappage scheme I could buy 3-4 every week. The smell of that cloth interior makes me sick these days.

Upto a point about 2/3 years ago all the MOD cars sold for a disproportionate discount.

    Not any more!

I don't mean buying their stuff out of auction (no way jose)...I mean the prices they are offering Joe public online seem to have dropped about 20% behind book compared to last year when they were offering book money online. Obviously they feel the brand is strong enough that they can squeeze the prices they're offering.

It's been good for us as we've had a few punters come to us for a double check on prices and been able to offer just that little bit more!

    It's interesting

I was at a UKCG auction yesterday and there was a 2012 Merc C220 CDI Coupe AMG Auto, 44k, Silver,  Very Tidy

    Cap Clean : £10,850

    Sold : £9200

I wonder what they gave for it in order to sell at £1650 under Cap Clean?

+1 and if you ever want any advice or help drop me a message or give me a ring you know my website and the numbers there its only ever me who is daft enough to answer the phone.

How many videos have you done and what are you basing that on? What period did you leave videos on for? Did you measure the response?
For what its worth I don't point out any imperfections specifically as all used cars will have them.

I sell far more with video than without and have tried both with and without. With video I take more deposits. With video customers are more softened up when they arrive and ready to buy. Its easier getting them to commit. It's been a game changer for me in the last 12months and boosted profits, brought down days in stock and increased good customer feedback.

Also I over prep refurb loads of alloys, service cars, buff them paint them have them presented as well as I possibly can but I very rarely budge on price. Customers can't find  anything to whinge at or chip me on. Its never a new car but its new to them make it look as good as you can to take good money out of them. The trick is to getting all yours costs down and your production line and speed of having them ready to drive away as quick as poss in my book but we all have different approaches.

You shift them quickly and you're honest with your videos : 'no major dents or scratches'

I'd love to see what that translates with on £10-12k 6 year old cars in real life.

If I'm ever up your way, I'll be sure to ring first !

  5. Depends on the miles, £9500 for a clear car sounds punchy for a 5 year old Polo in a frock.

Also the problem is that these really have to be S Line and black/white.

It could end up hanging around for a while, and it seems the guys who sell repaired cars do it mainly through deception and not using the correct reg on Autotrader to avoid it from being flagged.

  6. You should have been at Perry Bar yesterday.

This stuck in my mind, 2008 Audi A5 3.0 TDI Quattro, 100k, £3k sold

Cap Clean was £4k, and I'm certain it would have shifted on for £5k

Also BCA Measham last week, 2011 Audi TT 2.0T, 80/90k, Black, Grade 3 but tidy enough. £5.1k

    Clean AA mech check

    Capped at £7800

  7. Well I made it to the auction and this so called Grade 2 was really what they used to grade as a Grade 5, back 5-6 years ago

    *Every*Single*Panel

Engine sounded alright, but I have my doubts.

would that be a s/h plug and play or would it need to be coded in?

that looks so much better sitting on black wheels, and that's not a look I usually like, but really suits that colourB)

Be gone by end of next weekB)

ref' RR's I hear that people are saying the earlier L322's were the better built (maybe not such a high bar to leap) of the breed, the ones with the straight 6 'n V8 Beemer engines.....any truth in that?

    Swings and roundabouts.

Those BMW cars all had problems with the diffs and gearboxes.
