Kelly, I think you are wise refunding, the customers haven't been unreasonable and the car has had a repeated problem since the sale ( I know, I know its been trashed ).... I also know how I would feel if I was in their shoes, its good you have worked it out amicably, these problems can keep you awake at night. My only concern is the refund and who to give the refund to legitimately, (billy in prison) you will need to pay it back to whom even has complete power of attorney... I would be very careful that you don't get asked twice for the money, my other thought is do you actually know your customer actually wants a refund.... ?

My 86 year old grandad was using his ipad to search for things before he passed away. I remember this because I put his car up for sale when he gave up driving and he rang me every two days saying its still on your website I thought you were meant to be good at selling cars

Ain't that the truth! I think you have the right attitude for it though and hope you get some better luck with customers in the near future I think the reality is something no one can teach you and it can take you to the brink of patience sometimes!

Absolutely. I pointed to this in the fourth reply to this thread. It is not the same car that you sold them. Fair wear and tear yes, but after a collision- no. £3400 is far too generous. However- if you've agreed to do this, then it's probably best not to cause a potential riot by going back on it. Learn and move on I guess.

I would also make sure the right person gets the refund.

I bet they would! Think they've had a bit of a result there... Although I can understand the need / want to get them off your back.

I've always done local presss and it definately works for me, its built a 'local brand' for me for buying selling car. It's not always instant results a long term strategy, and whilst every other dealer has gone internet only in the area there are still lots of people who look at the papers then go on to the website and buy locally. Being local more chance of repeats and recommendations plus service work for the workshop and if there are any little issues easy to sort out. Doesn't work for all I know couple of dealers who tried to copy my ads few years ago and after 3 months gave up and pulled of the papers!

We took up the AT deal before Xmas after 8 odd years without it. Decided we are keeping it until April to give it a chance and I’ve had mixed results, I’m amazed at how many best price messages we have had- especially via the live chat feature. I thought this was a gumtree/eBay trait but appears not been with gumtree previously and it was a complete waste of money, motors exactly the same. F&F has not given me 1 serious lead also cargurus has given us thee odd sale but wouldn’t dream of paying for it, for all the common reasons. Best ROI is FB for us - we had a 2013 XDrive BMW M sport in white, 2.0 petrol that had 1700 odd views on AT, and produced absolutely nothing, best price brigade, swap for a clapped out Audi etc etc - Stuck a boosted post on FB with a £0 deposit finance example, car was gone within a week, cost us £30 I know we have had a few sales from AT we wouldn’t normally have had, but I’m not sold just yet, early days for us with them though...

We tried the local paper. The rep said sales were now down to 25000,so I checked and it was nearer 16000.Anyway we were getting a quarter page for £50 ( would have been £500 in 80s ) so we gave it a go for 2 weeks. The ads looked really good..... We never got a sniff.

The more expensive the car the more prep required, this stands to reason. On a sub 3 grand car i would say fresh MOT, good valet and maybe a service is all that's necessary. 3 grand plus and i would be looking at getting paintwork, alloys refurbed etc but at the end of the day it depends how much profit is in the car. Do not prep the profit out of it !

Bloody hope it picks up, phone hasn't rang in 2 weeks now. Had 2 gone in the first 4 days of Jan, one came back for a warranty claim though. Get the odd email offering £750-1K less but that's it! Think i'll start offering my manly services to all the lonely ladies to prop the car sales up when its quiet
