There are a lot of people who show you their card, but couldn't do a transfer, in my opinion.

Use a card machine to close a deal all day long. If they say they will do a deposit when they get home you won’t see them again.

I cant help thinking Brexit is going to be another Millennium bug.. Remember the shite that came with that, Planes falling out of the sky, No water or electricity etc etc etc. Come 12:00 on 01/01/01 nothing happened. Everything carried on exactly the same.

Why to all of you who take cards? Why ? If you sell 100 cars a year how much does it cost you annually for a card payment facility . Transfers are free...

I have a work mobile and a "private" i.e. family and close friends only who have the number, I don't even take the "work" mobile in the house, let alone on holiday with me Just stick an answerphone message on it "Currently away for xxxxxxxxx back on xxxxxxxxxx I found that the real cheapies just cost me as much as I could sell them for by the time I'd bought parts, 12 month MOT labour etc My Sales model is this ..................... Buy something 2008 upwards, with clean bodywork, (I hate paintwork), but I buy "spares / repairs" stuff privately, normally Cars with electronic problems, and fit second hand modules etc, code stuff where necessary, fresh MOT and Valet, unusual if I don't earn at least a bag out of every one I fix them up when Workshop is quiet, so effectively I'm buying some work, first started that when I had the Transmission Firm, used to buy Cars from customers with a goosed auto box, who couldn't afford or didn't want to spend out to repair them

It can make your life a lot more UNcomfortable including when you are on holiday. When the phone rings about "that car you sold me" it's especially unpleasant if the call finds you on a beach somewhere :-) The job these days is less about cars and more about people and what they want. Start with cheapies with big % margin. Also I would not tell those buyers that I am a mechanic as it could mean a comeback for a free repair on every little minor niggle. As Justin said adding value is key and you can add A TON of value to a £250 cheapie without trying to restore it to as new condition. And Good luck! Sometimes this is all it boils down to.

I started in the mid eighties as a young buck straight out of school with no decent qualifications. It was more about the cars I got to drive at a young age, XR2's XR3i's 205 GTi's Astra GTE's. The money was also very good for one so young. We had a freedom back then to actually learn the job, dealing with traders and valuing our own cars etc. As time went on the more controlled and regimented the job became, some groups didn't want experienced people....they wanted people who could follow their "process". I was fortunate that I always worked for smaller multi franchise dealers who weren't as rigid as long as the results were there! The hours were crazy though,,,,,,welcome to the motor trade, but it does get in your blood.I decided to go on my own when manufacturers started employing graduates to come into your business to tell you how it should be done, they didn't have a clue. most had never even sold a car. Making money is why I do it and it is what I know. Being your own boss is fantastic and I try and focus on the good punters out there and give them a good experience.

Welcome to the world of the Vauxhall M32 Gearbox !!! Whinning in 5th and 6th gear and finally the bearing goes through the gearbox casing. I think its due to the bearing overheating but maybe wrong, we have rebuilt a few as one of our trade customers buys 'Non-Running' Vauxhalls (oh Joy!!) but now prefer to just fit a recon box. It can happen at any mileage but watch out for car around the 80k mark. Also fitted to the Astravan and Vivaro (plus Renault Traffic and Nissan Primastar). Be carefull if using second hand gearboxes as a fix as I believe the ratio's are different for cars and vans. If anyone needs a recon M32 gearbox I use a company who are fantastic and slightly cheaper (about £150 ) then those who advertise on ebay and other sites. Very professional outfit and highly recommended (mainly by word of mouth) here in the South West. Happy to pass on their number if anyone wants it.
