Use a Nissan Leaf myself as my personal car. Before it I had a type R Civic. The type R was awesome but so is the Nissan, just in a totally different way. Loved revving the type R to 7k revs and hearing the engine. But the Leaf is utterly silent and when you put your foot down you get a real shove as it just launches so quick, all the power available instantly, no waiting for the engine to spool up. Driving it is a completely different experience, no gear changes just one gear. At speeds above 90mph it is still super silent, although you will watch your range go down alarmingly at this speed! Still like combustion cars but once you have owned an Electric car you can see why they will take over the market. Friends who now own one cannot imagine going back to a non EV. Range is improving every year and within a couple of years the norm for ev's will be 200+miles range.not every house has one ,but there are millions of houses with drives and with these you just plug in every night or less for a full tank of 'fuel' by the morning. Also no real service is required , no oil changes, spark plugs, exhausts, clutches and so on. Since I have had my leaf ,the only top up has been the windscreen wash. Wont it be nice when the calls from punters about dodgy VW gearboxes and blown turbo's are just something we used to have to sort?

Does no one actually realise that the vast majority in this piss ant UK are being controlled and "cloned" by the Politicians and Media ...........

Spied upon by your "free" Alexa ................. Oh fuck I could go on for hours ...................

KBW makes some very good points ......................

Me, I'm enjoying it while I can, don't really give a flying fuck about what happens in the future, and just wish I'd pissed off to a small hot Canary or Carribean Island to play with a Boat and get pissed all day long waaaay back when I had the chance

In reality I think I'll get around 10 - 15 years more playing with my V8 Mercs and by that time I'll be rapidly approaching dead anyway :P

It's the transitional period that concerns me most at the moment.

If you are selling well just now with your usual stock then understanding my view may not be of any concern. However, when you look at the news of not too long ago regarding diesels and how they are now frowned upon by ULEZ schemes as well, you can see an instant drop in values and a general opinion that they are to be avoided. Some folks here have already said they will not buy a diesel for stock when they would have had no issues with it for the last decade or more prior to recent events. Some people have and will lose a lot of money (and I am talking about traders here as well).

At what point do you see petrol/diesel being avoided to favor electric among the punters? If its a case of stocking a mixed bag or even more towards the newer tech such as hybrids or full EV then there is going to be a short supply as they are not mass produced at the moment and as usual, values will go up because we are chasing the same thing.

Its not like EV's have been around for 20 or 30 years in big numbers to get a feel for them. We are dealing with new technology that is supposed to be ever changing with better ranges - does that mean when the EV that does 300 or 400 miles comes out, the rest will be avoided in general?

A year ago, BCA was achieving over the estimate for every half decent car (even some right awful ones). Now, deals can be had at the right money (sometimes below your expectations). That was certainly not the case for many years.

From my own personal experience I am seeing it change. Definitely no where near as busy and for the first time in years I am having multiple sales operating at a loss. I questioned whether it was the cars - did I buy the wrong ones, is the price to high, is it my location, is it Autotrader and these 'featured first' adverts resulting in my ads not being seen etc etc.  Is it Brexit? On and on and on...

There will be a point where the desire for customers want the next best thing but because the changes we are seeing are massive (petrol/diesel to a battery pack) then values are going to be changing faster than ever before and the chance of being stung are going to be greater. Hey, if it was 2030 things might be settled down by then and at least we know where things are going. It was not that long ago that air-con was an optional extra on most cars (and for some it still is), now we have a completely different power source to deal with which seems to be setting the new standard.

Chalk and cheese.

I mean, I can see the appeal for some folks in wanting an EV. Just think man and wife (or whatever your orientation/gender is these days) saying to each other:

A: 'I think we need a new car?'

B: 'Yes, lets get an ELECTRIC one!'

A: 'Yes, I think we will. Saves the environment (means we get free membership to Extinction Rebellion event days), will make our neighbours jealous as they still have a diesel Golf (dirty swine), has an ipad in the middle (MOST IMPORTANT!!!), the seats make fart noises (very important and must have - more so than a/c), there really silent we can hear each other breathing inside (or silently screaming) and oh, free fuel (sort of)'

B: 'SOLD! - pass me the autotrader...'

A: 'Sorry darling, you need the app instead on your iphone'

B: 'oops silly me, must be all that vegan food i've been eating lately!'

So, if you had £100k what would you do?  Stick to the same old (petrol/diesel)?  Buy newer rather than older (only ULEZ friendly stuff)?  Go into classics?  Change completely to hybrid and EV?  Carry a mixed bag?  Or, blow it on a month long trip to the USA, followed by the Maldives, then pick up a cheap as chips V8 and the put the rest (if any) into a buy to let?

(oh, and get a job for Amazon working for minimum wage in slave-like conditions just to afford Poundland all day breakfast cans to make up for the poor return on the BTL).

LOL, I have a mate in Plockton with a Tesla, we ran his and my 5.5 Kompressor down Bradford airstrip, yeah your absolutely right, first few yards gone, 1/8th I was level with him, then the big Merc just fucked off and left him for dead :D

He couldn't believe it, see he'd been cloned by all this propaganda in the press etc to think his Car was a fast technological masterpiece, I won a nifty on that little bet and he paid for lunch in Portree

Mind he doesn't know mine has Kleeman Pulleys and ECU, but even so I think a regular one would beat him too ;)

My closest friends collectively drive a Yaris hybrid (gets an NHS discount/subsidy) one of the small boxy BMW things (personal car) and a C Class hybrid (company car tax swerve...not going to pretend I know what model it is). They're all under 35 years old. The rest get trains and uber, i'm the same. Hate driving outside of work.

My favourite garage we use are hammering trade shows and courses to learn about hybrid tech so they can be an indie ev/hybrid specialist.

Our only local main dealer doing well (Toyota) don't even stock diesel...not a Landcruiser in sight.

Are they the future for consumers? Yes.

Do I believe they're good? No. They are utter s**t for the planet. But because people have been spoon fed the sustainability narrative they've become the 21st Century Zeitgeist. Social and corporate responsibility is all well and good when you're sat in a warm comfy design studio or chatting in a bar/restaurant about your new motor but less meaningful when you're stuck in a pit in DR Congo mining minerals for the latest ev battery.

Will I ever stock a ev/hybrid? Yep, i'm a hypocrite with a mortgage and they're the future no matter what I believe. I'll stick to my well maintained high tax smoker though.

Yes, we Petrol Heads all will for a while, but eventually we will be outlawed, 5, 10 perhaps years ???????????

Likely the only place you will be able to use an IC Engined Vehicle by then will be at Classic meets like Goodwood .................

And then you will have to have deep pockets to have said Classic transported to and from the Track by Electric Lorry Transporter company

The clones can wipe out our use of IC Engines overnight with the stroke of a keyboard.

This poxy country is fucked now !!

I might as well tell you all now, I am no longer buying stock / selling Cars etc, Sales is now officially finished for me.

I am currently still running the Workshop, plus investing and training myself in other skills that will be more suited to Clonesville UK.

Whether I eventually actually open my doors to such skills is a moot point, but it gives me plenty to do for the forseeable, and I always love to learn and move with technology.

I am keeping a close eye on a huge modern workshop locally that will be fucked when all this goes through, I just may make an offer and employ a few local guys, or then again I might just sell up, buy a large enough motor yacht and fuck off around the world, (if the Yacht Engines are still allowed by then)

IF we are allowed a drop of petrol in the future I reckon we will have the red flag back at 4mph might be a robot instead of a man though or a drone , just how it all started . My old dad always said what goes round comes back round .

Imagine in the future 100 yrs from now , some guy will find the black stuff to make petrol and a blue print of a petrol engine and off we go again . Just as the mines for battery minerals die out and someone invents the words Climate , Ozone , again .

I'm starting to look at Horses again they are the future , Horses and cross bows

And what is gonna happen to the Economy / Cops next year when you won't be able to buy a new Car that doesn't come with nanny state Speed Limiters that you can't actually turn off ......................

BBC News: 'UK now commits to 'net zero' emissions by 2050'

Well, that's the final nail now officially in the coffin.

Less than 12 hours since it was made public oil has lost 2% in value in early trading, Pendragon issues profit warning.

Both the above not directly due to the announcement but fuel for the ever increasing fire.  Autotrader announced record profits two weeks ago, shares jumped.  Today, they are down 2.5% which I am sure is to do with the Cabal's decision (sorry, Government's decision).

This is what I am on about. The transitional change to electric cars. It will not only affect values of existing stocks and future purchases, but literally the entire economy.

Brace yourselves.

none of this is currently affecting / or will affect you,

1- zero emission's by 2050 means goods made "after/from " that date are eligible for zero emissions, that's 30 years away, we will all be retired or dead by then....

2-pendragons failings - shares are down 20% today(mostly the carshop arm) - well this is good news for the rest of us.

3-autotrader loosing value- yippee,good news.

the reality - larger used groups and franchise's are currently having pain, many of these will have no choice but to be involved in the transition that is coming, casualty's will be certain, coupled to the man in the streets perception of electric / hybrid as a used purchase...

despite doom news and uncertainty over new tech and regulation, we as used car dealers still have and will have the luxury of choosing what we sell, in the short too medium term in my opinion the used car game is looking rosy.

Guessing by 2050 the cost of electric cars will have come down in value and by then we will all be travelling by flying cars or something similar:ph34r: if any of us are still around to see it of course

If anybody is going to worry about how things will change by 2050 then I fear they may have too much time on their hands! Im only in my mid 30's but am a lot more concerned with the day to day problems of being in the motortrade than something at least a generation away.  Change will happen and we will all deal with it at the pace required.

So to meet this "zero emmisions" we are advised to = "eat less meat" "fly less often" oh, and cut down on waste like single use coffee cups, how about doing something a bit nearer home like cutting on back on the essential need of food banks, child poverty and increase policing, we led the way with the industrial revolution, yet we now have no [nearly] no steel industry, country was built on coal, now we have to import it, and now the british broadcasting cockroaches are acting like [deleted] by asking to prove your getting means tested benefits to get a licence [ over 75] .

We have a shitty government that will not turn round and say when china and poland [etc] stop throwing shite up in air then we will, and not until.

and it looks like were getting boris ! :(
