Anyone know who can repair a ctv gearbox problem, just noisy at crawling pace and when stood in park or neutral but quietens when put in drive and quiet when driving, cheers.

Horrible boxes these...

Well ROW... this comment will surely ease your mind  and has helped you no end.

ps. I thought the same, however didnt want to say it.

pps. Dave from UP North might have a better suggestion (i hope it doesn't involve a flammable substance and a naked flame)

I agree. The only way my comment could be scarier is if it was read in the dark.

Or if you owned the car like me :o

Has it done many miles? poss fluid change and filter?

For what it is worth vs cost - this is always my first port of call.

I had the same issue last year on a Qashqai cvt box.

Luckily a fluid change solved it (not sure for how long though as I sold the car pretty much overnight).

I remember speaking with Dave about it at the time, he said it’s common for the bearings to fail and the noise you’re hearing is just the start, it will be back!

I wont risk buying another one, I think I was lucky.

These are horrible unreliable boxes and cost a fortune to repair. I recently had an Audi A4 cvt, I was relieved to see it go and worried everytime I drove the thing after hearing the disastrous stories. I’ve come across many at the block with knackered boxes. First thing I’d do is change transmission fluid. I’ve heard this has worked on some.

Do you mean CVT, as in Continuously Variable Transmission?

If so, that will have both drive fluid and a drive belt from my poor memory, but could be wrong? If so, a 'rattle' under no load sounds like a belt issue/pulley issue than fluid?

I think that box is used in Reggies too (Renault own Nissan) and, a fluid change is part of the service schedule at around 50k.

PS There is/was a pressure fed bearing that can collapse in the Reggies box that can make a racket too, one of those things that can can go for a long time or...

Yes that is the box type, people seem to be saying it will the bearing you mention, I don't think an oil change will fix it although I would love to be wrong, I need someone who can repair the box, we can remove and refit the box

I would change oil and try it if not swallow a rebuild or block it. Where are you in the UK?

They stopped making those early on I think. Friend brought a brand new one for his wife and the box failed within 6 months, I’m not sure if they initially replaced the box and had another failure before they refunded but by then they’d discontinued the model due to failures and hadn’t got a leg to stand on consumer rights wise.

We had one a couple of years ago with a knackered box at 32K miles. An impulsive online buy at BCA without reading the Assured report! It wound up costing me £1400 and I think that was a cheap job by an old boy we know who works out of a lock up.

I'm getting quotes from 1500 to 3500 to remove rebuild and refit, shit :(

I had an Audi A4 auto (think that was a cvt box) my vw audi specialist sent some bit off to BBA Reman out of the gearbox, they repaired it, no issues after that.

Also bought my first Qashqai on Monday from BCA I'm glad it's a manual.

The reason for those quotes is because the dearer (usually more reputable) specialists really don't want all the aggro that goes with these trannys ;)

It may well be one of the Bearings, usually sounds like a muffled buzz saw if a Bearing !!

It is the "Primary Unit Bearing" if you can hear it without the Car moving, or if it changes pitch as you kick it down the ratios and Engine RPM alters, "Secondary Unit Bearing" if you can hear it only when moving and it's consistent with Road Speed not Engine RPM.

I made a tool up so I could do the Ford, Rover and Fiat ones with Trans in the Car, but IIRC the Nissan ones are a different design and needed a total strip down :(

The one that Oil change made a difference to would have been a blocked filter, (debris from a the Chain Belt breaking up) and Oil and Filter is only a short term fix until the Chain lets go and smashes up the drop gears and diff teeth !!

I doubt a decent Specialist will allow you to R&I the Trans yourself, I wouldn't, (but then I wouldn't touch one these days), too many problems can be created as a result of inexperienced fitting with any Auto Box ..................

Such as, (for example), only the Firm building the Trans will actually flush the debris from previous failure(s) properly, and using the correct procedure / pulsator machine ;)

HTH

Edit:- *flush the debris from the Oil Cooler and Lines*

Hi - I know what Dave will (wisely) say to this, but I've had many -particularly german crap- autoboxes go wrong over the years (one of the reasons I try not to buy anything german) and I've often been lucky in finding a guaranteed second hand box and having it delivered to and installed by a very good firm I know in Poole.

When I've not been able to find a suitable box, they have always sorted it in the price range of 700-3k max as you've mentioned.

I've not had any NIssans go wrong, but the odd older renault (I guess it's the same).  More often than not, the spend has been around the £7-1000 mark if not a rebuild.

Just a thought, but your other option would be to blow it out for a small loss hopefully through the block.

Hi,

I agree, I have a Mazda Bongo coming in to fit a good used Auto Box to, yeah, I'll flush the cooler whilst Installing it, but it is a cost effective way of getting it running again.

I won't rebuil;d anything other than Mercedes 722.6 boxes these days, because i gotta warranty them !!

I made it quite cklear to the customer that he sourced gearbox and pays me my hours even if it is a dud and he knows that, but to be fair, it isn't worth him spending north of £1500 plus fitting to get a rebuilt unit installed.

Good used units are often better than some of the "Cowboy" Rebuilds .............

Ha Ha anyone remember "Leaneys" in Erith Kent, or Mr Transmission, in Deptford SE London, (after Bob sold it to the Arab) ??

Personally, if I had bought that Juke, I'd SOR Ebay it ......................"Taken in PX, has strange noise, might be wheel bearing, we are no expert on these, sold SOR due to age and mileage" some dick will probably bid retail for it !!

Hi, Yeah, I remember that guy near Pipecraft, he specialised in Yank Autos, we did a fair few for an Importer, used to by the odd bits off them, but I can't remember their trading name now !!

Yeah that sounds like Leaney diagnosis, then when it's all in a million bits you'd have got the phone call ......................

Sorry to say it needs x y & z as well and that's all extra, now it will cost you 2 grand !!

Back in them days they had a lot of "Core Units" in stock, we would buy the odd one off 'em ...................

I remember  one day I was just leaving Leaneys' place as an old Transit turned up, a few quite big gentlemen of ethnic origin leapt out of it and started rucking over their "drug dealer mates" BMW 7 Series that they had fucked up, then out came the shooter, fired in the air, more threats etc and then a few minutes later, after they had gone the Cops arrived, I was stood over the road by then talking to some guys in the MOT garage unit opposite, they reckoned it was almost a daily occurrence

AND THEN .................. There was John Dodd, another Auto Box man, he's the guy who built that Merlin V12 Engined Car, got nicked at over 200mph in it, it caught fire on a German Autobahn, and Rolls Royce sued him for trademark infringement 'cos he put a RR Grille and silver lady on the front of it............. Right character he was I think he ended up in Spain, ripping off the locals for their Auto Boxes

Soooooooo many cowboys in the Auto, (and Manual) box trade ;)

LOL, another one I just remembered .................. One of the Leaneys ................ he had an 827 Rover in, like a 3 year old Car back then, he'd fucked up that Auto Box, guy was gonna sue / batter / shoot (delete as appropriate) Mr Leaney, so that weekend he hires an 827 Rover from Orchard Auto's in Dartford, "must have an Automatic" he tells the girl on the hire desk .................

You can guess the rest, needless to say the Hire Car was reported stolen after a couple of days, and later found in Charlton with no Gearbox in it !!

Tom Brown ? (IIRC) who owned Orchard Autos then knew fine well what had happened as soon as he saw the name Leaney, but he could never prove it !!

Fuck, I definitely should write a book
