10 cars per month over 2-3 years with a GP of £500. Let me think.....

    2 years = 240 (cars sold) x £500 (gross profit) = £120,000 x (1/6) = £20,000 VAT bill.

That is some serious part-time trading.

Don’t forget the bill would more than Likely be estimated so could easily double it and the onus would be on you to defend the bill not the other way around.

or worse case they see it as out and out fraud and prosecute accordingly.

    Yeh i calculated wrong

i just spoke to a friend who said i need to register asap so first thing monday im getting registered!!

Part of the registration form will ask for your current turn over and that’s the tricky moment for you right there.

option 1 don’t declare and pray it doesn’t get noticed

option 2 declare your previous fife years and u less your records are bomb proof you will get an estimated vat bill and be warned they won’t  use lube when they enter you.

You are referring to gross profit,we all make good gross profits.I would think you may be netting £200 per car, which is still very good. When you go ‘legit’ your net profit will reduce again with VAT and tax etc.BTW I also have to tell you that HMRC might already know all about you so you need to get a proper accountants advice to help reduce your liability.

There is zero chance he isnt registered doing 10 a month surly ?

Currently set-up is workshop with 2 full time and one part time with the possibility of going full time. Planning on sourcing stock from private sales focusing on clean examples. There is an auction in our town but haven’t really considered that as an option. There is a possibility to sell stock from some of our existing customers cars as we see a lot of new cars on a daily basis. Currently have space for upto 5 cars without disrupting our current business with the possibility of an additional unit to house more stock.

Devils advocate here, i wouldnt bother you already have from what the sounds of it a ticket to print money, ask anyone on here car sales is no longer that, i would put my money into investing into new tech training courses for your staff on stuff your workshop doesnt cover then charge what ever you want, google car sales within a 30 mile radius and then say same search for canbus expert or automatic gear box experts the results i bet will raise an eye brow or two.

Lastly i have found over the years if you have a good business and take your eye off the ball which buying cars is almost a full time job on its own you main business will suffer so you will end up with twice the work load but no where near twice the profit.

A busy fool is still a fool.

    Happy new year.

Type in mazda and not only does it show mazdas but all cars being sold by mazda franchises which is annoying

This is an odd case, where as it wasn’t broke and didn’t need fixing the old platform was very good expensive stock but site wise easy to navigate clean and tidy.

Cheers I'll take a look at the how to be a car dealer guide. I watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTBicGsgHXo and he made £900 profit (before tax) on the car, for a car he bought for £1000. Would you say profits like this on a £1000 car at auction or bought privately are few and far between, if so what would you say are more realistic profit figures for buying a car for £1000?

Are there any insurance companies you'd recommend for cheap motor trade insurance for new dealers?

Sorry for all the questions. I've fired in a few hearts for your help happy to keep them coming!

Almost impossible to obtain that margin, flipping cars is an experienced outfit who has been in the trade for years hardly a newbie.

auction houses will eat you up and spit you out before you even know what’s happened your more likely to lose £900 than you are to make it, try buying private allowing you to haggle hard and test drive the car must importantly avoid fees.

All the negative comments here, have been written by people with little or no knowledge of owning a Vw Up.

Ive owned two of them, and still own them, and they have been superb cars, so good in fact, that the Vw Up continually comes top in all the car magazine awards.

Their very well built, provide great fuel economy, and a generally very reliable cars.

The cream of the range, is the 75hp Move Up, as it has all the right accessories, such as A/C, Power steering, and the more powerful 1 Litre engine.

An Up would make an ideal first car.

The Hyandai i10 is a decent enough car, but has never come anywhere near the top in the autocar magazines awards, compared to the Vw Up or Skoda City Go.

The Up, is a back to basics, very high quality city runabout, fairly cheap to insure, but very reliable and very fuel efficient.

I think your on the wrong forum, on here you will mostly find people who buy and sell cars for a living not own them or form part of some VW love club, I have also owned two of them both of them where a complete hunk of junks, insane gear change which VW had to revisit with a clutch modification average ride and compared to other makes in the same price bracket and very basic in spec.

As regards ratings ect again wrong forum as dealers we are concerned with how the product last sells and returns a margin none of which has to do with how many they sold or how much advertising VW spends in a magazine to get a good rating because of course that never happens.

And i would never include the words reliable and VW in the same sentence.

I dont totally agree here Justin, with fb the aim is to generate 'organic reach' which is basically free advertising. If an 18 year old gets a nice car in his feed he/she will likely comment or 'like' the advert which will in turn appear in all their friends feeds too, ie organic reach.

I think targetting youngsters with expensive exotic cars is clever for the reason mentioned above. Kids will engage in it, a bit like having a poster on the wall as a kid! They do this stuff on their phones now.

Not that I sell exotic cars like this, far from it actually lol. I just see the method in the madness!

I see your point and whilst i think it has a little legs i dont quite buy into it, so far all the add has done is get a few kids going wow nice motor and looking at the post it has had two posts for kids younger than my son tagging each other in saying one day, the way i see it they would have been better spending there budget on aiming a little higher in the age group to possibly obtain a sale after all that is the whole point of the system not to get a load of spotty kids excited, i would imaging the average user of that age friends list is going to be around about the same age group give or take.

Regarding organic reach again i take your point but what is the point of reaching a load of customers who have almost zero chance of converting into a sale, I would much rather spend my money on target driven organic reach so i can convert likes and comments into sales.

  9. It really is a trial and error and you would be amazed at the amount of crazy adds out there, my 18 year son old keeps getting a local company boosted adds in his news feeds for audi s5 m sport bmw,s even had a g wagon last week, what on earth is the point on targeting that age group they would never be able to insure the car in a million years even if they could finance the car up, complete waste of money time and effort.

I go to lots of auctions for all sorts and wether it’s building materials, tools, cars, antiques, houses your observation applies

Interesting never thought of it like that, i attended a lot of land auctions and the revenue are very hot if the land is purchased for a single private person or as a trade.

I often wonder, take CD5 for example who do an excellent job, why someone doesn't just replicate what they do. I am no IT boff but how hard can it be?

Go to my website and you have similar search filters to AT albeit on a much smaller scale. Spend some money pushing that to the public and you're away. What is it they do (other than the brand) that no-one else seems able to replicate.

I know I am probably being niave but surely it is just a much larger version of any one of our websites. Drive enough traffic to it and cars will sell. Could you imagine how much you could earn if for example you charged £10 per slot per month on a minimum 20 car package and how happy dealers would be to send you their £££'s.

I still cannot believe how they get away with it but with people supporting them (myself included), we only have pourselves to blame.

I often wonder the same thing myself, loads of people have tried over the years with big wallets and still didnt make a dent, put it down to a question bigger than my pay grade to fathom.

  12. If you add the below i will sign straight away

audit on all car auctions to ensure everyone buying is paying there fair share of vat / taxes.

Ensure all the major auction houses staff are trained in how to appraise a vehicle.

    Hi Everyone

Can anybody advise me, I want to upgrade my Audi A3 Head Unit to include DAB,CD, Android, Bluetooth, the current system is Bose symphony with sub.

I want good quality unit along with sound.

Lots to pick from most of the top brands use the same internals, you will need to get a amplifier bypass kit to link up to your bose system or you will lose the rear Speakers and sub, armour automotive or connects 2 o good kits.
