Do you all honestly think the cost of a replacement clutch can be added onto a secondhand car? I find it’s yet another one of those things that seem to count for sweet f.a. and it simply comes out of my margin.

No, but along with new injection pump or head gasket it is a huge selling point that can sway a buyer. Whereas having to rebuild A/C or change an alternator just sucks profit

I'm on the fence a little, I don't think you intended to mislead and for the buyer not to ask at purchase and intact leave it weeks sounds like someone has got in his ear and told him he has been had over...

It shouldn't be this hard to make a living!

I sold a nice high end mercedes a few years ago in that wonderful auction site fleabay, and it came with a pile of main dealer service history receipts. Buyer paid deposit, then arrived a couple of days later insisting I had duped him - no service book. I never advertised a book, but he said I coukd have just printed the docs up myself! I said we could phone the dealers and he said it could simply be a mate I'm calling.

Asked for his deposit back. Told him to f-off.

And away he went. Mental. I'd rather have receipts than a book any bugger could stamp up!

    Hi Met

The Ford Focus has something called a driveshaft support bearing. Its on the OSF dirveshaft and is bolted to the cylinder block. It can be bought aftermarket from most Parts shops. Eurowrongparts keep them in stock.

We see quite a few wrong diagnosed bearings and gearboxes with this fault.

Quite easy to check if you can get the car in the air.

Yes, I know what the support bearing is thanks:) We had the car in the air running already.

turning right at 30-40 mph and the noise increase its the n/s

    hth :)

Noise starts about 25mph fades away into geneal road noise after 30mph ish. 'Loading up' the bearing doesn't really affect the noise, but I'd say O/S is noisier slightly.

Drove it again yesterday, sounds like front O/S, but the only issue I could find is the rear O/S bearing which is picking up a bit when spun. Generally, when driving the back of the car is silent.

    Thanks for the help:)

I don’t answer phone calls after about 7pm, my adverts clearly state “no texts” and I answer emails a couple of times a day.

99% of these idiots phoning at all hours that I used to get were just that, idiots. If they are so keen at let’s say 10pm, then they are l unlikely to purchase elsewhere so if they are genuine they’ll phone again tomorrow.

This year I can count on two fingers the no. of punters who originally phoned at stupid-o-clock, phoned the next day and then actually bought. The no. of strangers who don’t phone again or when they do (normally days later) are clearly full of shit must be double figures every week. I’d have a breakdown if I dealt with every pillock who phoned.

Funny world. I've sold a few cars to chefs/waiters/kitchen staff who all work weird hours. Ask to view at 7am or 10pm on a sunday night. I suppose it's one of the bitter pills I have to swallow for living in a large city as the city never sleeps?

  6. So, I've had a ruck with my mechanic Tony (mostly because he would rather be out doing his 'buying on comission for wealthy punters' rather than fixing cars) and have had to look at this Focus today. I've put the front end on stands and spun both front wheels which has shown some runout, more so on the drivers side. What is an acceptable radial runout because one tyre has a section about 9-10 inches that is about 1.5mil low? The last car I had with flat spots, the low spot was a much small area so probably from a skid. This car is ABS so I'm guessing not a skid, maybe its been sitting on flat tyres for a while? I don't know.

I'm buying but they need more work. Got a Focus here that needs a little more paint than I'd like, both front wheelbearings, missing spare wheel and jack, and has just started making a noise from the AC compressor? And I'm still not happy the bearing noise is gone, although I'm suspicious it's a tyre out of shape but we'll see

.... and after changing both front bearings there's still a noise, here we go. I bet its 'cupped' tyres

One wonders if BCA are relying on the vendor to hpi a vehicle?

A while back (2016?) a friend of ours bought a Bristol Street (?) Focus that went thru Bedford as an undeclared total loss.

He had struggle to get them to retrieve and refund.

    Maybe a one off...?

It's funny you say that, because I've heard the odd story of undeclared total losses being bought and returned. Makes you wonder if they are adopting the 'sell it and see' approach with these cars

A smaller auction house I sometimes use state that undeclared total losses are covered by their indemnity. I haven’t had this issue with them, but as it’s a family business, I can imagine that they’d be far more helpful than a national auction house.

Aston Barclays T’s and C’s seem to suggest that they check the vehicles to ensure they haven’t been total losses so perhaps it would get caught before even going into auction?

Maybe it's just me but there seems to be an awful lot more total losses in the system than ever before. I shudder to think what horrors you'd find buying stock from private sellers?

Prices on dealer auction are simply crazy...unless it's being used as a money laundering tool;)

We need some cheaper end starter Clios.

Just seen a tatty black '04 nice miles at 63k 5 door 1.2, in black, 16v needing a ticket (and they never take a ticket we find) with a load of advise notes from previous ticket, needing four boots with all at 2mm, crap history with no cambelt change noted.....and assuming no faults...hmmm

......£713 plus their TIP....how the f*ck you gonna make a margin across that?

It is not helped by the fact that nobody wants to spend any money on their car until it has catastrophically failed somewhere. There are many motorists that are super fussy about a car when they buy it, then avoid spending 'any' money it for whatever reason other than MOT and fuel. Then when its worn smooth, and rougher than a badgers arse they swap it in two weeks before the MOT is due

Vans and custom conversions are miles apart in the customer type, a few local garages to me that do what i would call bob the builder vans are dead, lease deals these days are very good so the second hand market is feeling that pressure, Leasing vans makes perfect sense to way more than it does to lease a car.

Don't forget the niche market of guys that buy estate cars and use them as vans;):D

I’ve only been trading since March this year and I’ve already fallen out with BCA met! Manheim and Aston Barclay for me :)

This is not meant to be a burn on BCA as such, but it was interesting to have the same issue with both auction houses and experience how differently they handled it.

  12. I had the same problem with BCA a few years back. The finance company would not relinquish there interest in the car as the debt was not covered by the sale of the vehicle alone. I argued that I effectively have bought a car without 'clear title'. Huge hassle, BCA were useless and eventually took it back. I fell out with them for about 10yrs.

shitter dealer {under£1k] average 25 cars near me threw the towel in other day, good! why ? misdescribed cars, saying full mot when in actual check its been out  months, advertised mileages dont correspond to mot history, drives round with a trade plate thrown in front window, lets punters test drive cars alone, made up reviews, just mobile numbers, people arent daft and i hope he doesnt pop up again .

These guys usually manage to go on and on weathering all the financial storms. Shame, because apart from all the wrong-doings they are pretty good at picking stock that sells quickly. But they choose to use their powers for evil not good!:D

And look on the bright side. All those punters after sub £1k 'shitters' will be knocking on your door afte a deal:lol:
