BMW’s timing chain problem

Just some advice. My X1, 2014 place, full BMW service history as gone in for repairs, due to a loud rattling sound. I’ve just been informed that it is a timing chain issue and I’ve been quoted from 1.6k  upto 10k to repair. It’s just been serviced with no indication of this issue. Where do I stand on this , any suggestions?

Do you mean where do you stand with BMW? Since it's full BMW history, I don't know if they'll offer a repair or contribution as a goodwill gesture, however, the car is out of warranty and I doubt you'll get anything out of them.

Whoever quoted you £1.6k-10k is out to take you for a ride.

Just some advice back..... Your BMW is way past the manufacturers warranty. Take ownership for the repair, don't bleat, just take it to your local BMW Specialist and pay the bill for a new chain. Don't look for excuses to not take ownership.

There are companies out there just doing these repairs for upto £2k. 

As for £1.6-£10k that's a joke. My backbone would have firmly stood when someone decided to be that vague... I'd push for BMW to give you a quote and 50% goodwill.

Realisticly the bottom end of the prices it probably about right between £1500 to £2000 

im unsure if he means he's had different prices between that or if that was what one person said 

Although I was half joking if someone said 10k to me my genuine reply to him would have been no thank you mate I'll scrap it first

Rudeness bugs me, along with bad manners and discourtesy which are at the top of my list of pet hates. It takes nothing to be polite and show respect. OP joins our forum and without even a simple polite intro just sates ...."Just some advice" and the expects ......

It's as rude as the solitary email saying "last price" "give you £.." "would you take".... blah.....

Mojo, if it's just a rattly chain as opposed to knocking, then it's around the grand mark for a chain (if that). Whoever has quoted him is taking him for a ride.

Guess it depends which garage is doing job though At ten grand I'd have laughed in there face .

I'm guessing they've said "Well mate if it's a chain it's £1.6k, but then if the engine has gone, and it's a 4x4 (assuming it's an xDrive), then the subframe has to come off, and yada yada yada.) Not sure exactly how they'd excuse it. Even if it is the engine, he's looking at £3k max for a recon. Not even BMW would charge what he's been quoted.

Aren’t the chains on them at the back of the engine? So it would be an engine and box out job probably plus the fact it’s an x1 it will have transfer boxes etc, I’d be guessing a minimum of ten hours labour at £45+vat an hour plus timing chain kit with sprockets, oil, coolant, gearbox oils and whatever else I can see it easily being £1500

Actually yeah you're right on that. Not sure if it's the N47 or B47 on that one, but N47 is around £800 for the chain (I'm guessing a bit more for a private customer.) So yeah, factoring in the 4x4 you're right about the price.

Would love to know the mileage of his X1.

BM Troubleyou have had this problem for 10 Plus years, every single one of their diesel engines are crap design. They nearly broke Toyota too when Toyota made the mistake of buying in their engines for the last of their diesel powered cars.

the chain is at the back of the engine meaning either the engine or gearbox needs to be removed for access.

 

However someone is taking the piss with an estimate like that.

I have heard of BM Troubleyou replacing chains in some of the older 520D as a gesture of good will despite they being out of warranty

for those interested - n47 engine, was on u.k recall for chains due to possible worn plastic rollers causing stretched or rattly chains 2007-2009 1,3,5 series cars, however later extended from 2007-2011 to include x1 as a recall but only in other markets, however bmw uk are calling it a bulletin rather than a recall, which sounds like a swerve, i'm guessing they will look and possibly replace rollors and chains as a precaution, but unlikely to act on an engine failure?

i had a couple of 1 series done on the first recall no quibble by bmw, but they were both sub 5 years and 60k miles at the time, i guess not to be expected on an 11 year old x1 with ? miles..

anyone on here had any joy with a recall on a higher mileage x1??
