    The only option you have:

Charge them for the cost of 6 month tax and tell them that you will arrange that for them tomorrow morning. Include tax payment in their invoice, even a debit card receipt for the cost of the tax so they can show it  in case they get pulled over. Submit a V62 with their details in the post office tomorrow am along with the tax application.

Not ideal but not much else I can think of here.

    Thanks nick

It is simple economics, a Workshop needs to put a mark up on it's parts, also does not need the hassle of having to do a warranty job upon parts supplied by a 3rd party.

I do do work for traders, and I give them a discount on my hourly rate.

I personally know all the local garages in my area, all mark up parts prices, (some horrendously), and none will fit parts supplied by a customer.

Too many potential implications fitting parts supplied by others IMHO ;)

True. One of my pals rang me yesterday for some advice on what to do as he used a reputable garage which he's used over the years he had a timing belt water pump kit fitted last week on his wife's audi a3 all parts supplied by garage from tps and fitted only for the timing belt fail on the motorway and kill the engine. Simply told him it's the garages responsibility as they fitted and supplied the parts now if he would have supplied the parts and the tensioner had failed like it has he would have been in a tough spot

FFS Can I buy a Car off you, I want it for exactly what it cost you though

Jeeeeezzzzzus mate, you wouldn't of got me to fit your own cheap parts .....................

A Workshop is a business like any other, and relies on selling decent quality parts with a percentage mark up, a decent Workshop stands by the Client and warranties its own Parts and Labour .................

Plus who is gonna get the grief when the Chinese / El Cheapo (delete as appropriate) clutch shits its pantaloons next week .....................

    I'm Out

I would have thought been in the trade it was always a good idea to source your own parts as cheap as possible and have a reputable garage fit them correctly as we are all here to make money. Dave I do understand your point of view but am guessing not a lot of car dealers will use a garage that will charge a fortune and take all the profit. How do we know the op didn't get a quality brand clutch and fitted at a reasonable price which to be honest as a motor dealer I couldn't see much wrong with and am sure most would agree.

To add another one, I was bidding on a car at an auction but was outbid ! Ok, but as I was leaving through the car park one of the auctioneers came running after me, that car you was bidding on the winning bid was a banned bidder so do you want it at the under bid, I DON'T THINK SO.

Had this b4 and you did right, next time that auctioneer will know not to mess you around

steady on chap,me thinks you are worrying too much, once the new electric stuff becomes out of warranty and a used car prospect the market will decide the value not us as dealers, it will simply be we choose to sell these or choose not too, as always time will tell which used cars we are happy to run with, as for elon musk and tesla it's looking like time will catch up with him - the established brands have laughed and thanked him for putting electric into the public domain - now they will wipe the floor with him and give him a lesson in branding - check out the latest audi etron's for starters...

for the record here are the latest new figures for may19 year on year, diesel down 18%, petrol up 1%, full electric/plug in up 81%, petrol hybrids up 35%, plug in hybrids were down 40% - probably due to loosing grant status?

the biggest challenge ahead for used dealers will not be how to value these cars but as always how to dodge the ones with issues, future appraisals - ears & eyes might not be enough !!

Agree. Times are changing not just the motor trade people are now using recycled materials to build houses as it's eco friendly. Time will tell and 1 way or another we will just have to adapt like it or not. Personally glad somebody has started a discussion about this and not just another newbie talking nonsense. Kbw great post and welcome
