    I'm going to look at a spot of hardstanding tomorrow that a bloke wants £800pm inc for, its 3,200sq ft and has a portakabin. There's also a workshop that will take 3/4 cars and he wants £700pm inc for that. I'm shitting myself about taking on something like that but it's the next logical step and if I have the workshop, the smart repairs, valeting and photographing won't be interrupted by crap weather and 3 hours of day light which will soon be upon us.

    Obviously it all depends how they assess you for risk but give Peacock Insurance brokers a try for the sort of doorstepping cover you want.

    £15000 seems to be about right for one of these it would be cheaper to buy some narrow guage rail and a small steam train and drive round the car taking pictures dont forget the whistle though ,customers love whistles

    i totally agree you can always tell a prospective sale by the fact the main question is, is it still for sale?,i never get asked best price from these people and when they turn up when they say they will its a privilege to serve them and i tell them so and thank them for the sale

    Its easier for punters to ask for a deal these days because its behind a keyboard or a text message. It depends when they start asking though. I find if its the first thing they want to know then it very rarely results in a sale, If they ask questions about the car first and about us and then the price I usually find they are more serious about buying the car. Because I work hard to find my retail prices I dont do deals anymore though I just do gestures fo the right customers. The space cadets get thanked for their efforts.

    I do deals like this often and try to be as diplomatic as possible while keeping things profitable. I'd ask the customer "how big of a loss can you live with" and some of them come up with a surprisingly large number. If they don't start with a number I will offer a bit over what I paid for it the first time round but if it needed a lot of adding value I will offer more. Nothing wrong in doing a deal like that, especially if it gives your customer an instant sale at a price higher than what they will get anywhere else. I wouldn't even clean the car as it comes back, will park it in our lock up, advertise it with the first set of photos and when the phones start ringing will give it a new full valet and a new full MOT.

    £140 is tops for me. Had a result with a Merc key, usually North of £200. I agreed to be gineau pig to trial his "new" software for Merc and he succeeded - new key, coded and my cost........ £70
