What a bunch of crooks. Bought two Golf's via online auction. Both cars had a surecheck and passed with flying colours.

The first turns up a couple of days later on our forecourt, eml on, turbo issue & gearbox issue. We have now contacted Manheim and they kept passing us along to the next phone number, eventually we got told that they couldn't help with any of the issues as they are not covered by the surecheck... Fact is, the eml is illuminated when on the 'surecheck' it was not pointed out.

So we haven't yet paid for the second Golf as we were waiting until they rectified the issues with the first one. Anyway, a whole MONTH later, Manheim called... 'bring the car back, we'll credit you every penny'. Great, we had then planned to collect the second Golf within a couple of days. I had been keeping in touch with the chap at our local Manheim throughout the whole process and he had confirmed I was OK to collect the second Golf the following day, turn up & they say they've re sold the car and we owe them £700!!! Account suspended until we pay!!

Sounds like a good one for the small claims court.I may be wrong but you could possibly embellish that with consequential damages,loss of profits,hurt feelings,breach of contract and other stuff,get it up to £3000..Our guys mainly buy online from BCA,they operate the same,threaten them with court action.

yes surecheck do check the eml, the issue is they don't cover sensors, what else but a sensor could put the light om, its a piss take

Recent cases on what is a fair injury to feelings award

When looking at an injury to feelings award they are calculated by way of a ‘band’.  This can be the lower, middle or high band.  These are known as the Vento Guidelines and arise from a case called Vento v Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police 2003.  The figures have increased since that case and currently the bands are:-

  • Bottom band - £500 to £6,000
  • Middle band - £6,000 to £18,000
  • High band - For the most serious cases where there has been a lengthy campaign of harassment £18,000 to £30,000.

some of you guys could claim the high band after dealing with Manheim for a few years, of course this is a joke these relate to employment cases, but still if someone was to try be funny to watch from the sidelines.

They’re a bunch of jokers, not going to bother with them anymore... I’m finding DA is ok at the moment

I feel for you. You should pursue it- they’ll give up in the end as they make SO much money it’s not worth the hassle defending it.

I’ve found Manheim OK to be fair, but I guess each branch is different. However, I don’t buy any diesels -too much grief

Ok this subject, sort of; Manheim vs BCA. I haven’t bought a thing from Manheim but i’m considering it. BCA have been fine but I’m struggling with buying from them lately so may as well try Manheim. Can’t be any worse. Or can it? What are people’s thoughts comparing the two?

But, at the end of the day, we all know that 'surecheck' was created to inspire confidence from private bidders rather than trade? Other than an additional charge there is no tangeable benefit for traders, you cannot pass that 'surecheck' on as added value at sale time?

EPV don't buy anything without viewing it in person first, buying on-line is all very well, but buying sight unseen from 'any' auction is scary!

Wel Met, this kind of leads me on to another question I have. 

To date, i’ve always bought online and as such, have sought the relative comfort of the mechanical check that BCA do, it is what it is, nothing foolproof but something. This has always restricted me to only cars that have a mechanical check. 

Now, as I need to grow my stock level, I need to broaden my horizons and look at stuff that doesn’t have a mechanical check which means getting to auctions. Which is fine, now I have the time to do it. 

The question is;

is it simply a case that vendors DONT put a mechanical check on a vehicle because they know full well it has an issue that will be shown up by an inspection? Or do some vendors not bother because it’s an added expense for them and hall buyers wouldn’t pay any attention to such an inspection anyway?

Exactly this. I have posted about this before on this website. I wonder if these 'checks' are actually free for vendors, or they get a few free and pay for the rest? But, these mechanical checks are designed for the 'vendor' to help sell a car and inspire confidence to bidders to buy. There's little advantage for trade buyers other than another extra charge on the bill. But, clearly, the vendors are 'cherry picking' cars to 'check', and avoiding the lemons?

I buy all my stock from the big two. Buying privately doesn't work for me. Personally, I find that private buyers on the whole lie about condition and when you weigh in travelling around London and its a bust. If I was buying 'specialist' vehicles or mint 1owner FSH high end then I understand that buying privately could work, but that's not where I am sadly. I'd be the first to admit that buying at the block is not without its perils but if it was easy everyone would do it?;)

Valid point but the eml should have been highlighted as being illuminated otherwise I would not have bought the car. Life goes on

True in that you’re def. the injured party.  

Unfortunately you win & lose in life no? On the whole things balance out I find.   

I buy more private than trade, and more trade from DA than Manheim and more from there than BCA  

Overall I def. win, and the private stuff causes me less grief and entail less lies than from the trade on the whole.  

Manheim and BCA (and obviously DA etc) is all online. No major issues except sometimes they’re better than described and sometimes they’re not. On the whole I can’t complain. 

However, at the risk of repeating myself and being dull: I don’t buy German, diesel or high miles, so maybe that’s half the reason. Also half the reason why maybe I don’t do the big numbers (peaking at 20 odd a month)!

I hardly ever actually attend an auction and even my local (depressing) one SWVA only fills me with dread at the thought of going.

sold a car a few weeks back with every check box checked

full new mot ,this car was sold before it had been unloaded

i was delivering it as the customer was a new driver

guess what

the eml came on on the delivery

Surely if the vendors were cherry picking and avoiding the lemons, then every inspection be it AA or Surecheck would be a sweep of green across the board? I see some inspection reports that looks like a christmas tree, surely a vendor would know that it's a shed and as such, not bother putting on a mechanical check?

Yes, that's what doesn't make sense! If you're going to surecheck it you make sure it will pass first?;)

If I see an EML on a surecheck report for an online purchase I won't touch it, however if I'm at the actual sale and it has a light on its not a deal breaker, you can listen to the engine, have a good poke about. I bought a 45k Jazz auto a couple of weeks ago from the auction in person, sounded fine on tickover and with the revs on but EML light on, I buy loads of them and was confident it couldn't be much. Turned out was a crankshaft sensor £33 + fitting, no drama.

I suppose you always trust your own decision over that of some promoted car valeter, sorry..... auction vehicle inspector.

Private ads and I advertise in the local rag- plus have ‘digital’ ads, and of course the good old swing-sign out the front saying ‘cars wanted’.

Without doubt, my biggest hits come from cars that are powered by a french lump and have flashing warning lights. Even the odd non runner.

I don't mind a 'punt' on a banger with a lamp on, but it's a brave man that puts 'real money' into a non-runner, especially as it's been through the trade before it gets to the block?

They knock them off before they go into the ring, most cars take a few miles for the eml to come back on, it's not always instantly lit once codes have been cleared.
