40yr old vehicles exempt, why? Just because a car is "old/valuable/adored/owned by enthusiasts" doesn't automatically mean it is safe and legal?

Makes a mockery of the whole thing. A 3 year old car with slightly worn brake discs gets an minor fault but a 40 year old car that could have Fred Flinstone as brakes gets waved through no test. Load of old cobblers.

I can see their logic but if they bothered to really analyse data, it would tell a different story.

Yes, many classic car enthusiasts loves and spends more time maintaining and polishing their pride and joy than they do driving the thing, howver - they are not all £200k E-Type owners.

I reckon we all know where we will find 40 year old Land Rovers and the like being driven around with bits falling off - right next to the family Vauxhall.

I don't see the logic, every car should be tested.

Agreed, every car should be safe, sound and roadworthy.

not interested in 40 year old rust buckets as i welded enough of them up to know not to want to own one

im more interested in making sure my mot failures are minimised and nothing shows on the sheet:blink:

I should've kept my old Saab as it would have been exempt!

....oh wait, it would have still been a rotten, structurally unsound death trap.

Stupid decision as far as i'm concerned. They could have suggested having a more minor test for classics to check tyres, brakes and structure?

Also noticed these tucked away in there.

"for fluid leaks posing an environmental risk"

and

"finds evidence that the DPF has been tampered with"

A lot of owners are in for a surprise!

"Your vehicle will get a major fault if the MOT tester:

  • can see smoke of any colour coming from the exhaust
  • finds evidence that the DPF has been tampered with"

They're really going after diesels... a bit of smoke and its a failure.

What about when it’s freezing cold and the exhaust is a lot more smoky? All cars do it....

Defeating or altering an emissions related device has (should) always been a fail as far as I was aware, didn't stop VW finest though:D

At plint of sale

Every forum I know has threads about removing/disabling EGR/DPF. Looks like the games up?

Does the new smoke test apply to all years or just newer cars?

including

New data on ‘Check the MOT history of a vehicle’

Something else we’ve been working on this month, is adding heavy vehicle (HGV and PSV) data to the ‘Check the MOT history of a vehicle’ service – and that will be available publically in April. Many of you told us through feedback that you’d find this really useful, so we’ve added it in.

They're really going after diesels... a bit of smoke and its a failure.

They are referring to vehicles that have a DPF fitted. They should not emit smoke.
