  1. Auction houses make far too much money out of private punters to let that happen
  2. I noticed on TopGear a Mercedes with an automated braking system. I wonder where you'd stand legally if the system malfunctioned?
  3. I wonder if Autotrader have guys skimming the web looking for threads like this on professonal forums?
  4. What sort of warranty did he get from you?
  5. The old BCA website was the best. I've told them that too.
  6. Yeah Nathan, share your experiences
  7. Exchange & Mart looks good value
  8. Seriously, great idea! Can I kick things off by asking if anyone has a heated front screen switch (the one that goes in the radio fascia) and/or door speaker to fit a 2003 Ford Ka?
  9. I'm in the weird position of selling a couple of cars for my ex wife and her husband. They used the cars as part of their business and are upgrading/downgrading. The cars are taxed, insured, MOT'd and registered to them as you'd expect. So, I just throw a bucket of water of them and take some pics! But, I have to put them on my trade insurance, I assume that their private car insurance will have to be informed that cover is no longer required on those vehicles. Will I then be 'all good to go' or am I missing something?
  10. Just thought I'd mention that I spotted a bike on the M25 with a trade plate stuck on the back
  11. I've got a BCA account and personally I still do the same checks, regardless of the vendor. I mostly sell older bits, but even 'Sytner' can take in shocking P/X's
  12. Not forgetting that the new BCA website looks like its been designed for primary schools kids to use! I told them that too!
  13. I remember checking out a Clio on BCA which sounded ok, the description was pretty thorough. When it was in the line up the 'inspector' hadn't noticed the nearside rear wheel at an odd angle! I guess these little things slip through sometimes
  14. Most roadside traders know that they can easily avoid a heap of trouble by simply taxing any sale cars anyway. After all, tax on cheapies added value. I also notice that you can tax a car without being the registered keeper so stick it on a monthly direct debit and cancel when sold
  15. Has anyone seen this? I suppose its better than "How to trade your way to a Porsche" http://www.soyouwanttosellcars.co.uk/Home.html
  16. Again, a lot depends on where you live. A trade mate of mine has recently moved out of East London to the Essex countryside and never gets any issues. Wheres back in the smoke, with "Police all stops" seemingly around every corner its very different. The problem is that you will 'flag up' on police ANPR as "NO CURRENT KEEPER" which converts into police speak as drug dealer/car thief/undesirable and will warrant a stop. Obviously an explanation to the police usually does the trick but you'll be public enemy no1 for 2 mins. Police in my area are generally of the opinion that 'motor trade' are guys trying to dodge round the system so "they are all up in your grill" Also, I think that the recent changes to the VED system have more to do with preparing for 'road charging' rather than savings. Watch this space......
  17. Years ago we used to travel to various auctions around the UK (Southampton docks, Tilbury, Liverpool etc) buying used Japanese imports. Does anyone know if they still exist?
  18. I worked as a compositor in the printing industry until Rupert Murdoch'new technology' put an end to it
  19. As far as auctions prices go, Its always been the same, if you buy popular stock then you will have to compete for it. Personally I dont tend to buy 'trendy' bits. I have mates that insist on buying 'privately', but I couldnt spend all day driving around the world looking at cars mis described by private punters! I understand that Japanese auctions are run purely on computer, you sit in a room with a computer and selected stock, press buy and its delivered to your site. This is obviously where our UK large auction houses are intending to go. But, and its a big but, the Japanese style auctions are built on totally "honest" descriptions! Whereas in my experience, the big UK auctions house will always be up to their old tricks!
  20. I source everything from 'the block' both Manheim and BCA. I trader friend of mine fom my local BCA branch has got the 2 minute inspection down to an art. When there are some private punters hanging around a car he is interested in he jumps in and 'tests' the clutch. Loudly revving the engine and not clearing the clutch so everyone hears grating gears.
  21. Well, to be fair, I wonder how much tax they are paying on those earnings. And I wonder exactly 'where' and 'how' they are living, if they are not claiming any benefits?
  22. Personally I think customers pick price (the absolute lowest price) and expect quality. Reputation is something that mattered 'pre' internet days when the trade was a local community. 30yrs ago I knew every trader in my local area, probably went to school with them or my dad knew thier dad, now its a very different and "everybody" is trade
  23. I'm quite a keen photographer and wouldnt bother getting my kit out to take car pics, especially with the limitations of the websites. I've been told the iphone has an exceptional camera with some very professional features where 'metering' is concerned. I would be more concerned with the subject and background than the camera to be honest
