That's the reason why I change my personal cars. Run them for a few months, do everything that needs doing on them, advertise them at above market price and when someone finally turns up with the money (or even better without them and wants finance) the car is "let go". At a small profit. Much better than "drive a new one for £399 a month" and initial rental of £6500.

I have a trader pal who runs a new RR Autobiography with a lump of deposit and about 1500 quid a month, seems like a huge waste of poke to me especially when it spends a load of time in the garage being repaired and he ain't that flush. I have just bought a 9 year old S class with full dealer history to smoke, a big luxury but one must treat oneself every now and then :P

Long story but I need to share yesterday’s events.

Regulars will recall that I have taken my Dad’s Disco 3 in PX against a BMW 1 Series.

Having bought him the Disco about 5-6 years ago, I knew I would struggle meeting his expectations of a new smaller, more economical car vs. The comfort of the Disco HSE.

When I say no expense spared, I have done everything to this BM ready for him to receive on Saturday.  New MOT, New Full Service, New Towbar, New Streaming Parrot Kit, New and Boxed Tom Tom, Taxed - ready to go.

I travel home in the car on Friday night and the next morning, the wife, me and the dog set off for North Wales.  I get about half way and suddenly, that doesn’t feel right - I pull over and it feels like it’s thrown a DMF.

I call my Dad to explain and that I will go back to the unit in Worcester and loan him my Citroen DS3 for a week whilst I get the DMF replaced providing he will insure it - he does.

I drive to the unit, dig out the DS3, swap all the stuff between the cars, refuel and start again.  (Time is now 1.30pm, we were due at their house at 12.00pm). My Mrs drives because I am pissed off, I say let’s go a different way because I am so fed up with this same road and I am sure we can cut a corner - blind lanes for 30 miles but eventually end up back on the same A5 road heading towards North Wales - Nikki says this car drives so nicely (it does/did) get within 35 miles of their home (almost exactly the same location as the BM) - car goes into limp mode - engine fault, traction control - max revs 2,000 and rough.

I didn’t think to bring my reader but decided (as we are closer to their new house to ours) to limp it to Dads and then call AA for a diog (don’t have relay). Most stressful shitty limp along dual carriageways for 35 miles ever.  Get within 3 miles and spot a sales pitch - I ask the guy if you could help a fellow trader and lend me a code reader just to see if I could reset the fault and at least know that it is nothing serious and whether it would drive back etc.

The result - it has thrown number 3 injector.

I now have a Disco, a broken BM in Worcester needing DMF and a broken DS3 in North Wales needing transporting.

    What are the chances.

When it goes wrong....it goes wrong, rough day by anyones standards. Hope you get it sorted.

  3. I use a George, get a wet kit only one if you use a separate dry hoover as it is cheaper. They last for years!

  4. I always tell the customer they are welcome to have an inspection,at their cost, as it is their right.

I also go on to explain that in the £150 ish inspection the inspector has no way of inspecting the car thoroughly underneath as they don't have access to a ramp/pit, this does tend to throw them a bit and for that kind of money I would certainly want a thorough inspection. I also go on to explain(AGAIN)that the car is a USED VEHICLE ie NOT NEW

Top and bottom if they trust you and the product they won't want to go and pay all that money for an inspection, some people are genuinely concerned and we need to understand that. I find that most people who come to me have read my reviews and seen the car in the pics and as long as the car doesn't shit itself on the test drive they buy it.

They *never* buy after a RAC / AA report, who critique a car in a manner for the buyer to feel they are getting value for money.

Had a handful done over the years and all have bought. on one occasion I did have to get the customer to call the inspector to explain why the "n/s rear door wouldn't open", it was a 3 door car:D

F me. Reading this thread is bloody depressing.

I'm doing completely shite, nothing is going right, the cars already advertised are in and out of mechanics for stupid things. Even the logbooks and paperwork are all over the place because my head's not in it with lack of sales and mechanical problems.

Sold 1 so far this month.

Next week will be brand new photos and adverts for the 2 that are ready to go (touch wood those two don't break down as well).

    James, well done!

It's not great when you are not selling and others are but just get the cars right and  the punters will come and buy.

    Keep the faith!

Lady comes to look at at mini just now, she loves the car, can I take it? Yes of course it’s got a new mot and service, you just need to pay, tax and insure. The insurance bit always seems to take forever when this happens but today an amazing thing happened, maybe I’m late on finding out about this but once the payment went through and we taxed the car the lady said right I’ll just get on my cuvva app and insure it for a couple of hours, I’ll do the insurance properly when I get home, it cost her £7, she arrived at 11:45 and was gone by 12:17......amazing!

    Well worth knowing, thanks

  7. I was talking to an old trader friend who, a number of years ago, I did a bit of business with. He reminded me of the time he bought a car off me, only to find some photographs of a lady in a certain state of undress. He returned them to me and I was in a bit of a quandry what to do with them(They were not of his wife as I thought  they would be). I did think about sending them in to readers wives but in the end destroyed them and thought if he ever comes back for them I will just plead not guilty!

Anyone else had some interesting finds they care to share?

On my second one of these (first one got left in a sold vehicle which went hundreds of miles away), never fails to start anything and the reason i bought the exact same model was due to the fact that i was so impressed by the original one. Heavy to carry but works every time.

Gets my vote too, starts pretty much everything up though they are quite heavy. I had a snap on one but apparently the later versions are not as good and pushing £500 are expensive.

And that's brilliant and the kind of trader I would buy from but what if you could earn something from that experience?

The way I look at this is that people currently have only dishonest options here. You want to see if a car feels like you? Here's your options:

    1) Pretend to be a buyer. Make all the right noises, drive it around, then give a lame excuse like 'I've got a few others to see, mate'. Judging from this forum, most of you suffer from this.

    2) Taking without consent.

There appears to be no honest alternative that I know of.

I do earn from the experience...… I SELL THEM CARS!

If I tried charging for test drives I am sure it would cost me more in sales than I would ever make on the few willing to pay.

  10. I honestly don't mind test driving customers but do so after pre qualifying them.If I have an 18 year old looking at something tasty probably won't get behind the wheel. I always try and look at what I can gain, give them a positive experience

  11. If he had revved my car to redline he would have been ejected from the car. If they ask me can their friend look at it I always ask how qualified they are (I use qualified to people only to work on my cars)which garage they work at etc etc. If they want to bring a blagger they will cost you the sale anyhow through their little knowledge is dangerous(I once had one come and say a water pump was noisy whilst pointing at an alternator ffs)
