  1. Thanks for the info people. Just to test CG I had several friends go onto their site and enquire on some of my cars. I replied to them and all  4 responses to their enquiries went back into their inboxes.  I have found CG less than pleasant to deal with on the phone, quite aggressive when trying to sell you a package.

Autotrader is my main one, it works for me and I find Ebay pretty good too. I have been with motors for a while but leads are not as easy to track(There is a call whisper from their site but your number is different on other affiliated sites so you don't get a whisper)

    Thank you for your input

  2. When I was first approached by them I insisted on going on a trial 1 month package(The same as when you pay them), I sold 1 car from it but it would cost me £495 for 30 or 35 cars with them which wasn't good value. Thank you for your response.

Ah, our weekly Car Gurus discussion.

There are real leads. But probably not off the free version. The free package means that the billy cant see where you're located, your website, nuffin. So when you reply "here's my website and I'm conveniently based in Shropshire" and they are in Norwich, it's far from convenient for them. That's assuming they're even getting your email. When you reply it's anonymously via an email address that looks very spammy and will often end up in the billys junk folder.

Like most things free, they aren't usually very good. The paid for version provides some joy, i reckon i sell one or maybe two a month off there and I only sell 8 a month. It's certainly been miles better than eBay for me but as ever, YMMV.

The above explains why you don't get replies to your emails. CG's don't spoof enquiries.

  3. I started in the mid eighties as a young buck straight out of school with no decent qualifications. It was more about the cars I got to drive at a young age, XR2's XR3i's 205 GTi's Astra GTE's. The money was also very good for one so young. We had a freedom back then to actually learn the job, dealing with traders and valuing our own cars etc. As time went on the more controlled and regimented the job became, some groups didn't want experienced people....they wanted people who could follow their "process". I was fortunate that I always worked for smaller multi franchise dealers who weren't as rigid as long as the results were there! The hours were crazy though,,,,,,welcome to the motor trade, but it does get in your blood.I decided to go on my own when manufacturers started employing graduates to come into your business to tell you how it should be done, they didn't have a clue. most had never even sold a car. Making money is why I do it and it is what I know. Being your own boss is fantastic and I try and focus on the good punters out there and give them a good experience.

  4. I have been with Autotrader since I set up on my own 12 years ago now, I was disgruntled with them and their attitude 3 or 4 years ago but I have seen a change in them lately(Last 18 months). I am an experienced trader(over 30 years) but have taken into account some of their comments about my business and it has definitely worked for me. Dealer reviews has been massive for me. It costs me around £80 per sale with Autotrader, Ebay(not with Gumtree) costs me about the same per sale but I do 20 ish a month with AT and 3 a month off Ebay. I am also on with Motors but I have been averaging only one a month with them, stuck my termination in with them and surprise surprise have done 2 this last week with them. Keep monitoring and get rid of something that doesn't pay. I did try Gurus on a full package(Trial of course)for a month and sold one car off them, they wanted £495 for me to continue with them but I declined. I had a very unpleasant relationship with them in my short time dealing with them.

  5. Go and learn the job working for some dealerships, after you have done a few years and if you still want to do it put £150k in the bank and work off £50k. Do a year and if you still have your initial money(or even a bit more) and have lived then you can probably do the job. Keep your overheads as low as possible, pitches can be very expensive to run but units/farms etc are viable with the internet, do a viewings by appointment and you can get about to buy cars as well as run the rest of the business! Good luck.

Always found it easy to sell MX5's. If they are not rusty, they sell.

They are a good little car, pretty much bombproof, sold a few over the years.
