I read a couple of posts recently and some people seem to have had a great month, others only just scraped by...

I had a very good November, probably my best ever (not finished yet so the calculator isn't out) but I personally am never ever happy with my sales, I always think I could've done two-three more, could've sold certain cars for more or quicker, could've paid less for some part exes or repairs and in general when I do the figures I have this sense of unfinished business.

So, do you reward yourselves at the end of a good month or go into the next trying to better it?

I honestly think it is in our nature to want to do more, you need the drive in order to keep at it day in day out. I honestly don't beat myself up anymore providing I have done everything in my power to succeed. I am older now(Almost 50) but I still love a deal but one has to enjoy life also, there are no pockets in shrouds!!

  2. I find that too many traders concentrate on the age alone and not what the actual car is like. I ask brewsters for something that is in excellent nick and always draw of someone. I had an old Omega diesel estate not that long ago but it was an absolute pip of a car(65k, one owner from new etc etc), Put it on at £2695 and had 3 people on it, felt like I give it away LOL. A couple of lads had looked at it when it was in the dealership but were bidding from £100 to £400 at it!! I know we all rate stuff at different money but I honestly think you just have to look at the car, forget the plate on it, and work from there.

How do you sleep at night? £23K.. Per month.

He will sleep at night because he will have months were he does very well indeed.

I think there will be plenty of people who will be running with this and more nowadays, good main road sites have always been expensive when all exes are taken into consideration.

Yes that is correct. 5 million limit for PL,  my insurance is with Arista / Ageas. Annual premium £1521.

Mine is due up soon Nick, how much stock does it cover for if you don't mind me asking.

AD, interesting you mention site (unit?) public liability as part of your trade insurance, that's something we have never had, wondering here if that would be any cheaper inclusive.

I was chatting to a doorstepper friend the other day regarding public liability, he doesn't have any. He thought trading from home he wouldn't need any, to say I was shocked would be an understatement:o

Not as shocked as he would be if he does ever suffer an "incident" involving a client, for what it costs it isn't even worth considering not having.

The few times I’ve advertised CARS on there I’ve not had a single call. Even cheapies are no good because if you’ve got a 2008 XYZ at £1000 then there’ll be loads of other 2008 XYZs at £500. Most of them all knackered, abused, 8 owners & f*** all history but they’ll be cheaper - In my experience Gumtree really is the equivalent of a slum car boot sale.

What it is good for is old household crap. I moved house I had an old cooker, some shit furniture, a scruffy old freezer etc. I priced everything at £20-50, savage advert, just to save a trip to the local tip. The phone nearly melted, although even on this type of item I had people who were ‘furniture tyrekickers’ (whatever you’d call them) & nutters wanting me to do all the work & take them to their house, cash on collection.

Thank you BHM. Yes this is exactly what I thought may be the case. At least with Autotrader people can go and see they are dealing with a proper trader with reviews to back it up. This has made a massive difference to my business this year.

We pay 175 plus VAT per month for Ebay Motors Pro for 25, they have tried to get me on Gumtree a few times, I might try Cargurus instead of Ebay when my contract expires.

Any feed back on Cargurus anyone?

In my experience I wouldn't do it. I managed to get a free 1 month trial of their top package(not their usual free one) with 35 cars on their site and sold ONE car from it. They were incredibly evasive about price and quite unpleasant to deal with. When the month ended they came and said they had a special deal for me at £495 per month for a six month contract. I just laughed, all he could say was that I hadn't lost money even if I sold one car as this would pay for their adverts????????? Same month I did over 20 from Autotrader though it does cost over £400 a week.

    Pre gumtree contract?

Sounds like the same deal I am on, yes pre gumtree. They are currently offering a deal for 35 cars on both gumtree and ebay for 350 plus VAT, is anybody selling cars that are over 4k on Gumtree? I am told it is okay for selling cheapies but not dearer cars?

Ok, just taken an 05 Clio in chop - 156k, clutch all but completely gone - paid £100 (finance deposit).

Alloys, new front tyres - weigh it in or fix and sell for £500? I think I know the answer but it seems criminal with brand new tyres and tidy alloys.

Not one I would go on with Mark and I do plenty of cheapies, probably the answer you expected!!

    Hi Stocked Up

I can recall Comerfords adverts aswell.I am up the road in Newcastle. So is Big Mike on here your father .

    I don’t know about nice,it is a manual diesel.Typical up north vehicle.Where we are,manual Mercs are popular !

Sorry, no he isn't my father, I was merely stating that the father was called Mike aswell as one of the lads.

Just sold a manual C Class the other day, 10 plate with low miles, a proper northen car :D

Same Comerfords family whom also ran bike shops and imported Bultacos?

Miles wise, a super clean metallic piss yellow Clio around 2002 model year, 1.2 16v with wait for it.....238k, the same average miles as it is to the moon.

...one caring owner from new, just regular serviving with clean oil and air and still on original clutch with thrust bearing a tad noisy, but only a gnats tad.

I don't think they ever had anything to do with bikes but big in the banger job in the 70's and 80's. Went into better stuff as time progressed.

I seem to remember back in AT mag days up here a BIg Mike’s,might have been Hartlepool....I do like bangers by the way,I now have an 06 Rav to run around in,it was a grand plus the cost of a new ticket....

Part of the Comerford dynasty, Mike(father) and the 4 lads Alan, Michael, Stephen and David. Started in Stockton(Would do 100 plus bangers some WEEKS from that site) and when the lads got older they had places in Darlington,Hartlepool and the Boro(Grangetown). All before the days of CRA. Where are you from Trade Vet? Must be reasonably local.

can I ask if any of you still like cars? This job has killed the love of them for me

As a young lad I loved cars but now I mainly just like the profit, though you do get the odd one that you think "I'll keep this for a while"....then a punter comes and KERCHING.... dealt!

It’s like a mad house now (dad and step mother’s house).  She’s mad, he’s deaf and it’s almost as if they have a script of everything they need to say and you’ve little to no chance of getting a word in - TV (not our colleague) is on super loud and my head is spinning by the time I leave. Mind you, they love a drink and I would hate to offend.

I know mate but many a true word and all that.  Of course the cars are shit - for example I’ve got an E280 sport arriving this week - the equivalent would cost you £50-60k new, so one for sale at £4000 is going to be shit (by comparison).

I would love a big old S Class - I think they’re great.  Shit off road though and winter is coming.

They are a cracking car mate, I love them. A8 also are great value, I always find that I can smoke them for a while and there is always someone(Rig worker or long distance wagon driver)who wants a big lump of flash for not crazy money to drive when they are at home. Correct in saying they aren't great off road though, mind you can always raise the suspension:lol:

I'm not so sure about that. For those type of jobs I don't think you can beat hot water, chemical, elbow grease and suction.

That said, I am toying with the idea of getting a full hit steam cleaner like an optima. I'm going to have a demo of one next month as soon as a lovely part ex treasure comes in.

    I have a hand held steamer https://www.karcheroutlet.co.uk/products/Product.asp?ID=5424&?utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=comparsionshopping&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjsX9_a3d3gIVxrTtCh2j6AxDEAQYBCABEgK0UfD_BwE

I put chemical on first then use the above and you don't have to soak the car inside then get the George on it.

I also succumbed and bought a MAC Drop Revolution, places were wanting a grand plus for a refurb machine but these aren't much more and I know a few businesses who have them and were very impressed, I honestly don't know how I have done without one all these years. www.macinternational.co.uk/media/MAC_Brochure_2016.pdf it is on page 10, might be worth a look at for you.
