I asked my customers in the last 4-5 months about how long had they been looking for a car and at MY advert before they called to arrange a viewing or leave their deposit.

Less than a week in total was the answer for most, a couple did say it took them over 6 months but a couple said started to look (adverts) on Sat and bought the next day.

By what I have seen of your ads Nick they are very good so I can understand a punter coughing up quite quickly. I tend to throw some cars on when I am busy(25 to 30 cars some months) and my attention to detail isn't what it should be. I should employ someone to do other tasks to give me time but I don't seem to be able to find the right person.

This can make a real difference. Just a different angle of the car or text in the 'attention grabbers' seems to fool Joe Public into thinking its not something theyve clicked on before

According to Autotrader people spend 11 weeks online average when buying a new car(to them). I suppose if you change it around they might think they are looking at something which has just gone on instead of something that has been sat for months!

  3. If you aint advertised it with Bluetooth and made no reference to it when presenting the car then surely there isn't a legal case under CRA. Having said that if £150 will sort it out I would do it for them if they have paid screen price and been good to deal with.

  4. I wonder how a gearbox casing could smash, can't be down to the punter now can it!

For future reference put in your returns policy that the customer is liable for getting the car back to you(aT THEIR EXPENSE), point it out to them and get them to sign it. If the cause is genuine then you can offer to reimburse them, if they have fooked the car themselves then it is down to them!

I bet she has taken the car in to the garage because the box will be whining or crunching and is probably fooked, driven to destruction!

    Hi Elliot

    Income generation proposal for BEN

I have just done my own survey of the Ben financial statements. While it is an excellent long established successfull charity with its dedication to the care and well being of retirees,it appears that this level of care has extended to its directors remuneration.I am unsure why 12 people should be earning approx.£2m plus benefits to run it.I would have thought there would be many retired main dealer principals who would do the same job for a fraction of the cost.

    Well said Trade Vet.

I honestly don't know how people can draw so much money when others are doing it all for nothing, £2 million between 12 of them, they are having a right royal do!!

Foodbanks are the way forward for me...….giving to them before you all start:P

Examples like this are why it's so important to take a long term view in my opinion. Car sales will never be liner, x a month for y months a year. It won't even happen, it's an ebb and flow. Feat or famine as you say OP. Glad you've had a little flurry to add some Christmas cheer.

    Absolutely true EPV.

I have had a week of rephotographing cars and rewording ads just to try and paint a slightly better/different picture. Perhaps it has worked!

  7. Had a real busy year overall but the last 3 months have been fairly tough for me.

This month didn't start so great either but did 6 today(4 out of nowhere), there really is no job like it!

The lows are low but the highs are high....its what keeps us doing it I suppose! Probably won't sell anything for a week now LOL

Got one potentially comming in as a part ex against a BMW, chap says full service history, MOT history makes it look pretty good aswell. 98K miles.

Obviously its a huge engine with a CVT, am I asking for trouble?

    How old is it?

The boxes can be problematic if oils haven't been changed fairly regularly, couple that with the cabby roof gives a lot that can go wrong in my opinion but I always look at each car on its own merit. If everything seems alright then fair enough, I would give one a go!

If you give me the reg. number, I’ll have a word with a friend at a Hyundai dealership, it might have some history on their DWR system. (Ditgal  Work Record) :)

I don't think Hyundai have a national system as others do, I may be wrong?

  11. I have sold plenty over the years but only ones that have been repaired and on the road a few years, but have never had a problem with them but tell them it is recorded and don't make a story up to what it had done.

Ratesetter will finance them on a PL but % can be high.

The odds are 50:50. It's either the same car or it's not. Some punters have been known to turn up in a different vehicle for the "appraisal" hoping that the dealer will miss the age / mileage / spec / condition difference and will fall for the old "it was on a private plate" scenario :-)

I remember members of a particular "community" doing such things with Mercs years ago, showing the nice newer and cleaner one at appraisal and then chopping and old goat in on delivery. They were shrewd and would choose the right time to do it(Horrible rainy nights etc)

That story is better than mine. You were employed at a main dealer, you must have had to work hard to cover that up from the bean counters. As for making mistakes,I have made some far bigger mistakes than that.

To be fair they weren't a PLC and I coughed to the area director and told him I fooked up, he laughed and said that we can all make mistakes.....PHEW.

Bid this punter on his 7 year old, powder blue met,Merc CClass against a newer one. He had parked his swapper in an unusual place over the road from the pitch..Said he would think about it.A few days later I see a powder blue met C Class park up in exactly the same unusual spot. The guy comes in and I say something like ‘you’re back for the C Class then’ and he says yes.So I write the deal down for him and say leave a deposit and get it tomorrow. He looks at the deal and says,’ I will just pay for it now ‘.I pass the deal over to a sales guy for the handover. The next day our sales guy says something like, was that guy with C Class a friend of yours etc.The swapper C Class turned out to be 4 years older than the one I valued,it was a different punter.

I think the swapper had its birthday and we blew £3k on it,how embarrassing. sorry if I have mentioned that one before.

I bet you never made that mistake again :D.

I had one when I was working in the main dealers about 15 years ago, sales lad brings appraisal form with all customers details and car details but I aiways insisted that I drove and appraised every car because I never missed a trick. I walked the car  and drove it, noted a couple of dings in the side and went back inside, I passed the customer at the sales lads desk and said what a nice car he had, he did laugh but I didn't think anything of it. I gave the sales lad the offer sheet and we did the deal.

A few days later the car came in swap, I had it marked for retail but the sales lad had said about the work that it needed. I said it was fairly minor and to stick it on the pitch with awaiting prep on it, he started to laugh and said that I had to be kidding as the car had a big hit on the front end. I went to see it and sure enough the front bumper and bonnet had been poleaxed, the bonnet was more of a Vshape. I went mental with the sales lad for taking the car in like that, he said it was like that when I looked at the car. To cut a long story short I checked the CCTV when he first arrived and sure enough the damage was there....A blind man on a galloping horse would have spotted it. I apologised and spent nearly 4 grand putting the car right. I took a fair ribbing for this for a little while as you can imagine..... lesson learned.

Ha, I used to think it was all whippets on a bit of old rope, racing pigeons on a wet Sunday afternoon and going to be disappointed by the black cats but ever since I ventured further north than Victoria station it's grown more appealing.

You forgot the flat caps too..... everyone has a flat cap!!

I'm in the 'affluent SE' and, with the usual exceptions, a lot of people here are pretty skint, it's so expensive to live and work here.

I've had a few mates in the last few years that have UK average paid jobs leave to move to bits of South Wales and the North East. They're the kind of people that won't see their wages rise or decrease much wherever they're based, NHS, teaching, retail, so it makes a lot of sense to halve the rent and reduce your council tax. Shame they left though.

SSSHHHHHH Don't be telling people how good the North East is...…. we don't want it full of Southerners ;)
