You must have lost on some. No ones been in this job for a few years and not lost out. Its not possible.

Ive had a few big hits. Q7 that came in as a part ex. Sold it. Some twat bought it and did about 3000 miles in 2 weeks. Engine completely knackered. Had to give a full refund, rebuilt an engine it was still not right.Gearbox ended up needing replacing. Ended up bodging it up and ebay selling it. Lost at least £4k.

Game of averages, win far more than we lose.

I agree Rory, it happens. I honestly don't know of anyone who hasn't taken a fair old hit one way or another doing the job to some degree.

When do you expect it to pick up and sales start running smoothly? September has been absolutely shite.

The job can be fickle but there is ALWAYS business getting done!

I had a terrible last 2 weeks in August(3 cars as opposed to 8 to 10 in the 2 weeks), took that time to video everything, rephoto and write better descriptions.

I am on 15 for September with the same stock

It will be interesting to see the response on this one.Motor dealers nature in general is not to own up to their cock ups and losses.I would not no where to start.

If you don't get a few you're not trying hard enough, funny though I have had allsorts of oddballs and come out very well on the vast majority of them. It is an inevitable part of the job though I think the Zafira was quite a blow on such a low value vehicle..... onwards and upwards though eh!!

Met an interesting coach builder guy recently who owns several high value classic Mercs. It turned out he previously had an accident repair centre for many years. However it had grown to 40 staff with wall to wall agrovation and he got the opportunity to sell out.He is now doing better than ever after being asked to renovate one car. He has a workshop at home and with his son he now renovates top end classics like Ferrari’s for selected customers. He does not advertise and has 3 years work booked in.

Well done to him for having the courage to change what he wasn't happy with, more people should do the same!!

If you took £7,750 over the phone you will lose the lot if its a stolen card .

If he paid chip and pin on the card at your premises your safe . Its what the pin number is for , shows customer contact .

    its that simple really .

Only take the amount of money on the phone that you are prepared to lose was what I was always told .

had two old dears once try and buy a Megane R26 once and wanted to pay on the phone , i took the details of the card but didn't take the money and reported it , it was a stolen card in the end .

I feel for you if you do lose the £7,750 and the car of course ,

David, even if people pay chip and pin it isn't 100%, if it turns out to be a cloned card/fraudulent transaction you may lose your money!

  6. I was always led to believe that as long as they use the chip and pin your money was safe but this simply isn't the case. If it turns out that a card has been fraudulently used they will come back for the money from you and there isn't a time limit on it, this is even if they come and use the chip and pin!! You just have to be so careful nowadays, we ain't selling small value items.  I know it is a chew but get proofs off people and a photo of them at your premises if you can. The card company are obliged to fight your corner but will only do so if you can provide due diligence.

You don’t need anything fancy, we use brisk and g101 from Autosmart, a litre or so of brisk to a full bucket of hot water, apply to seats with a sponge, a spray of g101 if really dirty, then use a scrubbing brush and scrub the seats and then wipe with a clean micro fibre which will lift the majority of the dirt then finally finish by going over with a wet vac.

Brisk from Auto Smart is a 98% fix we find .

We run it through a wet vac with hot water ,

    BUT ;

Stubborn stains i spray Brisk on the seat nearly Neat then apply steam while rubbing with a Brush or use the steamers own brush if its part of the kit , we have a high pressure steamer , while its still boiling hot wet Vac it out , works a treat .

As Casper says steam on the head lining brings it up like new .

I will stand by what the lads say here. Brisk is fantastic for upholstery, use at a dilution of 10 parts to 1 through a machine or 4 to1 for pre-soak if absolutely minging. G101 for plastics at a dilution of 10 to 1. I buy the large 25 litres and use it with the dispensers, lasts for ages. George as a wetvac too.

    Hi,

I have just had a letter from my card terminal supplier that a car I sold on August 1st for £7750 was paid for by a stolen credit card. This guy "Dean Talbot" Heywood Lancs had bought a car a month before from us with a credit card with correct name, address which matched the Photo Licence details he sent me by email.

I have had no comeback from this car however the 2nd car he bought was his "business credit card". He is now non contactable and I have reported the car stolen.

My question is, am I protected from this kind of fraud, why didn't the bank freeze or check the payment with the card holder? the credit card company insist it is my liability, however why are we not protected from this kind of fraud..

I have contacted the police and reported the vehicle stolen. But I am obviously naive to this kind of scam.

Unfortunately if a card is stolen or fraudulent, even if they type the number into the machine by way of chip and pin, you may still have the money taken back. The card company should look into this to make sure the punter isn't trying to scam you by saying the car was stolen/fraudulent when it wasn't.

  9. I think we have all had a few but the most memorable ones for me were 2 irish gents who rocked up in 2 lovely mercs to px. The cars were absolute stars, absolutely mint!! They were tough to deal but got there in the end. I was a young lad(A JUNIOR) at the time so had a load of help off the sales manager. Delivery day came and went with no collection, I wasn't overly concerned as we had good dippers off them. They rang about 3 days later and said they would be with us in the next week or so....did we need any more money etc etc. To cut a long story short they came one evening when it was blowing a fuckin hooley….torrential rain and all. Said they would be there at 6 and was still waiting at 7.30... they kept calling saying they were on their way. To cut a long story they dropped the cars and collected their new ones, they even said they were sorry for the state of their cars but they had been busy working and weren't as clean as when they brought them to px. We looked at the cars the next day when the valeters came to us and asked about the prep needed on the Mercs Fuck me..... the cars were not the same cars as we had seen a month or so. We had been absolutely stitched to the hilt, they had had paint all over, needed some more....holes in seats and a dog had eaten part of a headlining in one of them. Thank fuck I was a junior, my SM nearly got the sack as he had gone early and left me alone.... we blew 8k on the 2 cars trading them, funnily enough to an Irishman. I have never fallen for that one again but I chuckle about it now.

Very very true , putting the large amounts of money into the hands of those who cant manage it is a very dangerous thing . Watched some swap from buying trade UKT cars to high end stuff and fall on their swords very quickly .

We know one trader who started 4 yrs ago , been through the lots of the funders , now has other traders cars to sell on commission a few of his own , 50 k into finance with a finance company who tell him its 2% if they get reciprocal business when he sells . If not the interest is much higher . Two units full of cars that are not his , the rest dont belong to him and he swears hes doing well .

I suppose it all depends what he did before David, if he was lifting 300 quid a week in a crap job he might feel he is ringing the bell now.

You can see he is getting in deeper, he can't see it. This next year will sort the wheat from the chaff!

you cant go straight into retail unless you are a finance assistant (ie not a proper motor trader you are just buying and selling a commodity)

the real work starts by buying and trading on and increasing what is usually minimum start up funds

this is why most of us proper motor traders started dealing from home after buying from main dealers /auctions peoples homes fettling and either trading on to an established business or reblocking to catch jo bloggs his missus and his cute daughter with no bra:lol: (can i say that)

once you see that theres more money in retail if you can be arsed to do the detail its the next progressive step

next step is car has fault can you repair yourself or pay to have it fixed

its all down to time management versus funds versus diminishing returns

    so theres no answer really

i started dealing very early in my life but buying cars from the block back then with proper proper dodgy full mots unknown till driven away by the way was a real curve ball learner as i had no one to learn from the mistakes had to be taken on the wallet

Spot on analogy JD..... I was more interested in the cute daughters BTW :)

Hello BHM. I have told the customer numerous times to call me. Repeatedly he doesn't call. As stated above by Mark101 I agree. I don't like contact via text message but in this case I now have written correspondence and can quote with evidence what has been said if the matter goes further. My normal course of business is to phone up as soon as possible in the case of repairs. But again as said I now have proof of him misusing the vehicle and making unauthorised repairs then requesting money towards the vehicle. The advice is much appreciated.

If he won't call he is a shithouse and a liar...… I am sure you know this!!

Same here but having said that year on year August has always been slow... holiday season... everyone’s away or cashing in on the euros... SEP has been fantastic so far.. I have complained to AT rep about the search criteria etc waiting on there call back lol don’t think that will be anytime soon :D

I know it's slow but I think I have always managed to get into double figures. I did have a holiday and think that would have been my busy week but hey ho.... all is well now! I think AT got sick of me tbh…..I was never off the phone LOL

Hello, I'm new to this forum so you'll have to bare with me. Just wanting some advice/opinions really. About 2 weeks ago I sold a car for £3000 to a customer. The customer collected the car at 7:30pm. He had around a 2 hour drive home. At around 11pm the same night, I get a message saying they're having a few minor issues that need repairing. I offered to repair the car which I'm always happy to do if there is a genuine issue. I then get a message saying he has repaired the issue himself but now there is another little fault. Again, I offer to repair if the car is brought back to me and I even offer to cover the cost of fuel to get it back to me for repairs. After a few days without a response I get another message saying that now this issue has been fixed by himself (not a reputable garage I can follow up to check the work has actually been carried out, so no receipt for proof of repair). You can guess where this is going next, the customer is now saying he has found more faults and I need to pay for the repairs. As I've said, I've offered to repair the car for him and even cover his fuel for him getting too and from my premises. Now he's stating I should repair a chip on the window screen which wasn't there when I sold the vehicle. He's also stated he has done in excess of 100mph in the car and there is a slight shake when braking at that speed. Again, I offer to repair at my expense as I have with everything else but he doesn't seem to want to bring me the car to do the repairs. I get yet another message saying there is even more issues with the car (I'm now getting suspicious the faults don't actually exist). I've offered a full refund for the full sale price of the car, now he's saying he wants extra money for the repairs he has done (which there's no proof of). Now I'm been threatened with trading standards. The thing is any car I sell that does end up needing repairs, I always happily oblige and repair the car to make sure my customers are happy and I retain a good reputation for my business. I am a small independent holding a stock of 8-10 cars on average. Where do I stand with this customer, as I've offered a refund for the sale price I don't see what more I can do. I've been trading for around the 2 year mark now and this customer is harder to deal with than every other customer I've had combined. Any knowledge any one on here has to where I stand with this situation would be much appreciated (I don't know what more I can do). Thanks. Jordan.

As part of CRA 2015 you have a right to inspect, he either brings the car back as per your returns policy or you go and get the car(Ideally with a trailer).

May I ask what checks/PDI's and paperwork you use to backup your sale? This can stand you in good stead when wankers come a calling. I also suspect that driving the car at 100mph would go against him, particularly if he did so on the public highway.

Did he tell you what the faults where? What is his expertise in fixing cars....he may have turned an easy, simple job into something much more serious and expensive?

When occasions like this arise, it is crucial that you take control of the situation by getting the car back to inspect, he is taking the piss out of you now and you are letting him. You have offered him a refund on a vehicle that he has thrashed not even knowing if their was ever a fault(You haven't stated what the faults supposedly were).

I am sure you are a very nice person and want to do the right thing by your customers but don't be a soft touch.

    Good luck
