Hi everyone, Posted one earlier but not sure I did it right, so posting it again just in case! Its a hypothetical question, as im answering a mock exam question type thing! Say now a UK-based used-car dealer wanted to expand into a new country like France or Germany or whatever (but also stay in the UK), what would be the implications of exporting some of the car inventory to one of the European countries? Asides the fact they have a different-hand drive. Sorry if anything isn't clear, i dont know too much about the industry, although I'd like to! Many thanks in advance, Hit me up with any questions if you have them! Sammy!

At the moment we are still operating under EU single-market arrangements (until 31st December) so there are no import duties to pay, other than for imports to Cyprus and Portugal. A car could be 'exported' to an EU country and retailed there - just paying any local sales taxes and registration fees (and roadworthiness check, if required). All of those vary from country to country. A used car is one that has been driven more than 6000km and you'd need an EU Certificate of Conformity and an exhaust emissions test (if 3+ years old). Assuming we leave the EU without an agreement then the UK would be treated as a 'third country' and presumably the EU's 10% car import tariff would be applied. Export/import documentation would be required which would include Cert. of Conformity etc.

I think the simplest one is probably the one you couldn’t write in a magazine and it’s simply “don’t be a dick” I am far more likely to do Something for a customer I like rather than one who has a poor attitude.

I would recommend that people research the value of any part exchange they may have, many customers seem to massively over value their current car and under value the car they are looking at, dealers can’t work miracles and it can make it almost impossible to do a deal, as their budgets simply will not stretch. I’d also recommended that prospective customers be honest about there credit history, if looking to purchase a car on finance. Car dealers/staff will not be judgmental and it save everyone considerably time and effort. Finance companies are very good at uncovering every minor missed payment, defaults and CCJ’s so there is no point not telling the truth! The majority of dealers have specialist brokers/lenders that can help them get the best finance deal on the market for their credit profile. Prospective customers also need to find/check their Driving License and then bring it with them. You are unlikely to get a test drive with out it and you will need it you take out dealer finance (it needs to be in their current address) The salesperson will take you more seriously if you come prepared and put your cards in the table (I like your car but can you move a little on the price) is making their job much more straight forward. Your the more likely to get a better deal.

I've only dealt with NextGear and nothing like that amount of money. However, they've been brilliant thus far. No margin payments, cars automatically extended for 60 days when they become due, no audit fees, just the interest which they even offered to defer (I didn't). No idea on BCA but I've heard less positive things about them. My rep's view is that if they put everyone out of business then they'll have zero customer base afterwards so it is self defeating. Furthermore they'll have loads of cars to dispose of they don't want. To be honest I'm small fry and probably not their top priority and if I really had to could probably clear it but nonetheless they've been much better than I expected.

I must say I’m surprised that they are taking such a hard line with you at this time. As you say it’s no one’s fault and you are doing the right thing by closing. What does grate on me that if you had a 1.5m buy to let mortgages you could apply for the 3 month mortgage payment holiday but as car dealer with a similar size loan there is no specific guidance/help.

I'm not that smart, I am just average general public and if I want a new TV then I know enough to compare similar TV's. Or if I want to buy a house I can compare mortgage deals and know pretty well if somebody is trying it on. I don't understand why its so hard.
