I understand the reasoning but I feel for dedicated mot stations and of course law abiding  citizens this is the beginning of the end 

Only zafira owning waynettas are going to rejoice at this because their tyres cost £15 each part worn innit

I see enough cars that never ever see basic servicing its hard enough signing customers up for an mot and a service 12 months down the line

God only knows the thinking behind this. Garages are open, MOT stations are open. This was a very bad decision. I don’t see any genuine justification for this whatsoever.

As cars are supposed to be roadworthy what’s the problem getting them MOT & rectified, if necessary?

Never mind an extra 6 months, I see the state of some of these cars with 6 months left on them.

Anyone in this game knows that a reasonable proportion of the public, and it’s not just the banger punters (punters strapped-up on some shite finance deal are just as guilty) have no intention / interest in maintaining their cars - they’re just interested in running them as cheaply as possible.

W T F ! have had to read this twice three times ! even gone onto dvsa to doublecheck !

W T F ? =DfT is working with insurers and the police to make sure you are not unfairly penalised for not being able to get an MOT.

look a bit deeper and the banger market over the next 12 month will have its arse dropped out ? advisories not done on top of new failure ? uneconomical to repair.................

I can see why its been done  but if someone comes in AFTER lock down and back to normal with a part exchange and uses the "its mot 6 months Extension mate" and the MOT has long expired they will be told to go and get an MOT, as there will be no excuse at that point.

I get them MOTed anyway so any punter with a minus-month MOT will be offering scrap money unless I’ve got big money across the car to play with. Any more & I’ll drive them & then shred them to bits. 

Bangers customers usually only trade in for one reason - they think (rightly or wrongly) their car is about knackered and will cost £££ to repair.

The saving grace with cheapies is they usually cost absolute peanuts to repair, it’s just the customers are too lazy, stupid and/or greedy to spend a few quid.

Any of you guys dealing in pre 12 plate common muck ie focus clio megane,corsa,astra this 18 month mot lark is just going to crucify your betterment budgets

Newer stuff it's always tyres but even the ditchfinders might go up muchly once we go back to work

You’re right although consumable parts are cheap on most of those type of cars. The knack is in the buying of the car, the of sourcing parts (half local factors, half Internet for me) & controlling labour costs.

Yes,all repairs done in house here

I get daily ecp updates not sure if they are via the omnipart link or mushta account but on special offer monday was a 500ml can of brake cleaner at £4.95,-strangely they had these on offer last month at 98p so i bought 30

Point being if you aren't on your toes and only buying just in time components you get your glands felt by all the factors

This is why it's good to specialise,you can buy cheap in distressed markets,for instance I buy air filters in 10.s

As you say buying wisely is the key,I can usually do a good appraisal on a shitter from photos,best thing was mot history appraisal ,now that's well fecked up

The full ramifications of this, like the corona, will take a while to whittle through our heads, so far  i have read that just because it has come in quick, it will be a LOT longer before it is reverted to 12 month.

3 year old cars that have seen little besides a service now get 3.5 years, so it hits these too,garages have had there bread and butter removed from them for 6 month, many who lease there mot equipment will go down the swanny, established mot stations see there business lost overnight, parts dealers sales down, tyre sales down, on and on, and what do we get ? more danger on the roads.

maybe one good thing, do not bother phoning up for appointment, just turn up, on second thoughts see above

If I had an MOT station I think I would be lobbying whoever to make  the 6 months MOT deferment not transferable to new owners/keepers of vehicles since the lockdown.....does that make any sense ?

yes it does, but, going back, when cars had vic checks it was campaigned that smashed up cars should have a fresh mot before returning to road [ vic checks were thought of as a safety check by many ] they still don't.

You can see an argument for both sides i guess 

maybe 6 months is a bit long i don't know maybe 3 months would have been better for people in isolation etc

trade vet makes sense instead of extended the expiry date they maybe should have put a 6 months exemption or until change of keeper like mot exempt to October if due in April but not transferable between owners .

how many cars to do you see at 3 years old failing on tyres to the wire etc with some of these ways in excess of 100 k.miles

Meant 12 weeks isolation don't know where the insolation came from ill blame spell check lol 

Funny enough there was a company near me did that too and were terrible and went out of business they created damp in a lot of houses .
