Do X1's not come with Radios? Just crank up "Shaking Stevens - Merry Christmas everyone " and happy days, problem solved.

If obviously the radio volume is set to an uneven number the BMW gods make strike down your engine by making the rattle worse causing the radio to be turned up even louder...

High even number and this will cover all issues : )

I think a BMW specialist near us does them for about that.

 

I throw a tensioner in them now for cold start noises. Caught early enough they are fine.

Unless the plastic guides have snapped and/or the chain is stretched

Forgive my Beemer ignorance, I haven't sold them for nigh on 10 years now. 

They stretch quite a bit (as most chains do) but the tensioner gets weak (fails) and then the chain starts slapping guides until they fail and then jump/snap.

If they snap at low revs/speed it usually does rockers in, if it snaps at speed in an auto it destroys everything.

for those interested - n47 engine, was on u.k recall for chains due to possible worn plastic rollers causing stretched or rattly chains 2007-2009 1,3,5 series cars, however later extended from 2007-2011 to include x1 as a recall but only in other markets, however bmw uk are calling it a bulletin rather than a recall, which sounds like a swerve, i'm guessing they will look and possibly replace rollors and chains as a precaution, but unlikely to act on an engine failure?

i had a couple of 1 series done on the first recall no quibble by bmw, but they were both sub 5 years and 60k miles at the time, i guess not to be expected on an 11 year old x1 with ? miles..

anyone on here had any joy with a recall on a higher mileage x1??

Got a 2008 3 series coupe with the N46 and the engine is brand new only done 54k on the chassis. BMW fitted a new engine free of charge after a recall in Jan this year.

Thank you all for your contributions on this one. To confirm, BMW have quoted a maximum of £1.6k for 12 hours to try and establish the exact cause, and costs could rise up to 10k for a new engine, which is not going to happen. I think one or two of you have nailed it with your realistic estimation of the costs.. The mileage is 96k by the way, so not excessive by any means.

Rob where are you based? I'm sure lots of us could recommend you a decent garage to get the job done properly and at the right price, as I'm not sure you'll get anything out of BMW, though you could certainly try.

If you're near the West Midlands I can recommend a place.

You need a specialist BMW garage for this job not BMW , even with good will they will rip your heart out with the final bill . 

Lots of specialists will do this job for £1,000 /£1,500 and do it well , not the apprentice at BMW .

If it’s MK and you want a specialist then worth calling Deutsch Tech. I would recommend MTek in Northampton as a better alternative though , as Northampton labour rates quite a bit cheaper than MK rates.

BMWillenhall is 80 miles from you which is approx £120 on a truck, and I can certainly vouch for their work.

You've got a suggestion for MK, so maybe take it there instead. Or a quick Google search will help you. For the love of God though don't drive it far for the sake of the cost of a recovery truck, or you're just asking for a bigger bill.
