Audi A5 S tronic, the reliable one

Recommended Posts

Guys I’ve bought one if there and the box is dragging when coming up to a junction, it’s sometimes lurching when I pull away as well, there’s no fault codes so I’ve had the box serviced, really dirty oil and probably never changed, anyway it’s made no difference, has anyone ever had a specialist fix these?
I’m deciding whether to just put it back

cheers

Andy

Try getting someone with vag com or odus to reset the parameters and relearn the gears, I find it makes a noticeable difference to them.

Hi mark we’ve tried that, I’m just wondering if it’s worth the grief, if someone could say for x amount of pounds I could fix it I’d crack on

I think its a case of getting it into kit form and seeing whats wrong with it.

Some of the multi chronic gearboxes have a filter buried right inside the gearbox. TBH of it needs a filter its fooked as it will be full of swarf from a major failure somewhere.

My salesman listed his own Faulty CVT Audi on gumtree and sold it the same night to a polish man with recovery truck for sensible money.

Hi Andy,

Driver Transmissions in Birmingham 0121 440 3476 for anything with an auto gearbox. They normally diagnose things over the phone from your description of the problem, as they know auto gearboxes inside out.

A chap sold me a Freelander with what he thought was a gearbox problem, even though he'd spent £3,500 on a recon gearbox a few months previous. The car had a nasty vibration as soon as you put it in gear and tried to move backwards or forwards, I rang Driver Transmissions and explained the symptoms and they diagnosed it as the engine mountings. Which it was, and cost me £120 to repair at my workshop. My point is they could have had me right in the net but didn't.

I've used them many times over the years and will always recommend them.

If you get this hooked to diagnostics you can relearn the clutch pack to the box. They need doing with wear. I ran a 3.0 tdi s tropic for 40,000 miles and had to have this done

Recently did my nuts on a Golf DSG similar... Motronic unit was shagged. Tried another. Same. Even different gearbox. Same... Figure that out.

Sold it for a big loss, as Spares / Repairs / Scrap

you have to be very lucky to resolve this cheap if the car is lurching on the slow down to bottom gear, bands for sure, usually from skipping vag 40k service intervals and usually shows itself at 80k+ miles,  i'm yet to see anyone confident enough to quote this job pre box removal at sensible money, but have seen plenty of cars with invoices at circa 4K after removal, dsg and multitronics, advise not to get involved.

We had an S Tronic last year , coming to a halt it launched into 1st gear instead of 2nd , then shuddered slightly moving off . My Son looked at fixing it and it was circa £2k for the parts for him to do it himself .

we bought it right and sold on Ebay , lets say it left for Poland shortly after at a medium to healthy profit , This guy was going to convert it to left hand drive he said , paid up and left .  happy days .

CRAP gear boxes .

Hope you get out of it ok

We have just done a 2016 golf dsg oil change, the oil was manky. I can see why people skip them when you price up the parts!

What is it thats costing all the money, parts wise that is.....

I'm VAG curious.....

VAG curious

Never mind the ‘box; Will it include a cambelt? Will it be an original part? What about the water pump? And a receipt to prove? Perhaps you could scan and email the receipt to me? - it’s not that I don’t trust you or anything like that it’s just I’d like to make sure myself.

£18 for the filter

£15 per litre for the oil (5.2ltrs required... call it 6)

plus vat... plus the labour at main agent...

Then the recalibration then the fact it’s the same, it would be so much more easier if you knew how much it would be to fix

I have been naughty today.

Having had a gut full of EV nutters; someone walked in today whilst I was talking to the close rep - he was looking around my Leaf with a woman in tow. He looked a twat, urban dress wear but 20 years too old, I didn’t bother my arse to ask if he needed help. Questioning my lazy intolerant attitude, I looked out the window and saw a brand new Octavia VRS. At this point I knew I had made the right decision by ignoring him - he left and we never even spoke.

My valeter got back (from fetching me a McDonalds) and said, that bloke in the VRS that has just driven past me was here last week when you were at the auction.

Clearly a time waster.

I’ve got a Q5 s tronic sitting in the corner of my place. Sitting being the operative word. Going nowhere. I think i’ve got to retail my way out of the gearbox issues but it’s £2500. There’s also a small chance that i’ll need a mechatronic unit if the strip down and new clutch packs don’t do the trick.

Andy, there is a VAG specialist in Benton, two ex Audi master techs. They are next door to Austrin Engineering (auto gearbox specialist). Have you spoke to them?

And how long was the cambelt on the shelf, was it sitting near an electric motor, a known source of ozone that can degrade the belt even though sealed in a bag, in a box, in a well ventilated area?

Just a few more questions FOR MY PEACE OF MIND  Did you keep the old belt & tensioner? Do you still have the box the new kit came in? Could you confirm the part no.s of the items used? - these part no.s will be on the VW invoice. Can you confirm the engine code?
