Another fun valuation

I used to love my 440 turbo. Thought it was great and really quick. Would hate it now no doubt.

If you took the ashtray out, you could get to a small vacuum pipe (I presume) and clamping it off made the turbo over boost and it flew then. Dunno why I thought that was a good idea but I was young and stupid.

David, I did well out of your last Volvo coupe, if the 440 sticks around (lets hope not) call me :-)

That is the later model, plenty of them still around.

The mind boggles with some of this old shite. I’ve had a few old trade-ins etc. and it seems old Mondeos & scruffy Rover 75 estates (must be diesel) are a sought after commodity. One chap buying my latest 75 even mumbled something about there’s a nostalgia surrounding the British motors industry!! I nearly choked stifling my laughter.

A low mileage auto 75 D Estate is a bar of gold. Punters get gooey over the perceived wonder of it having a BMW engine in it  -all be it fitted the wrong way round.

I have a mildly mad (or probably should I say - delightfully eccentric-) punter in Southern Ireland, who has amassed his own little private Rover collection that he calls his museum.

I have supplied him with a few gems over the years. Now I’m not talking about what we would call classic models, but rather 100s, 25s, 45s, 75s etc.

One exception was a 60’s rover 75 :P4 is it? I don’t understand anything before 1970 -but I was told it wasn’t the right model by another trader in the know. He was talking about getting a P5 at some stage, last time he bored, I mean spoke to me and again, not the right one/not a coupe

He’s a lovely guy, but proper mad and loves them.

Moving this conversation on from mazda 323s but keeping it very much on the idea of the 'modern classic', I don't suppose any of you were in Enfield yesterday for the BMW sale (I have bmw Park Lane in my head but not sure if correct).

Anyway,

I had spied a 44k mile 1996 vw vento for sale on the bca app, 1 owner and no less than 20 main dealer stamps and being into old volkswagens I thought I might have a cheeky bid.

Grade 4, out of mot but failed it's test on minor stuff plus it was an auto so never going to be worth fortunes.

Got in front of the screen to watch a 65 plate Cayenne make 34k then a merc eclass almost 7k and the auctioneer was rattling through the cars rightly as they do...

Then came the trip down memory lane.

'Gentlemen, there are few times in our lives when we are able to have a snapshot into what life was like 20 years ago... And here we have this opportunity' (or some such guff)

It was like the world slowed down and I turned to my wife and said well that's this thing now going to be sold for fortunes, just watch.

She turned round and said, 'why what does it cap at? ' (I nearly missed the auction laughing at her)

So I stuck a bid in at £100, then they moved it up to start at £900, so I thought fuck it - a grand, it has to be worth 2-2.5k sitting pretty to the right buyer.

It finished at two grand.

Plus fees, plus mot and any prep it needs.

Soon to be found on ebay at 6k and festering on some lot for the next 2-3 years until the buyer gets sensible and realises they haven't a mission.

But, maybe it was a private nutter or maybe the trader is an optimist.

Im still sore at missing it for a grand mind.

Probably,

That's the illness some of us have about liking cars as well as selling them.

I still knew when to retreat though, the buyer on the other hand has to be in the shit and got totally caught up.

Or is crazy.

No, 124 Sport Coupe a 2 dr Coupe, IIRC they were the only FIAT's that had the 2 twinchoke option, most only had a single T/C ;)

I'm probably old enough (45) but I can't remember.

I am sure my old man had the Fiat twin cam in one of his Morgans - went like stink for a wooden framed car.

My Mini 1275GT had great overun, unburnt fuel that ignited on exit from the cherry bomb - awesome.

Best sounding car was my 5.0 S/C XK - that on overun sounded evil.

I got Fiat for peanuts in 1979 'cos it had failed on sills and Inner Floorpan edges, nicked it off a local skint guy ;)

I wore that "Clarke" Mig out on all the Mini's and Escort 1's and 2's I had back then

My S/C Merc S Class has Pulleys, Carlsson Back Boxes and De Cat, that thing sounds evil on both overrun and WOT :)
