Jump on a train to Central car auctions in Glasgow. 6am train is about £20.00. Lots of bargains there and a good friendly bunch of staff.

Be honest, are you really going to get a 6am train to Scotland to buy stock? Or are you just going to look online and come back on here again when the next delivery is a pile of shit?

Why so cynical? So you've never had a poorly described car with damage you didn't expect? Do you buy your stock online or physically?

The purpose of this thread was to warn others that Aston barclay don't report rust damage on older vehicles yet here we are again with pointless comments like yours completely going off topic

No, I haven't.  I've bought and sold 50 cars online this year and never had the type of issues you have. I haven't seen the inside of an auction hall in my life. Is that luck or do I take on advice given and learn fast? Maybe I'm due a run of lemons. This isn't about me.

The purpose of this thread was yet again, you asking for advice when something went wrong. I told you that BCA and Manheim operate a certain way, not to be fobbed off by AB and persevere with it and you did and got a result. Don't make out like the purpose of this thread was to warn a bunch of seasoned dealers of the pitfalls of buying online from an auction house.

My point is that you often ask for help, people offer it, and 2 months later you go and buy a 9 year old Hyundai in silver. Hence why I am a little cynical as to whether this golden advice you're offered is actually sinking in. You started a thread, got good advice and got a good result. So my question I think is valid, are you REALLY going to get a 6am train to Scotland, to buy stock?

I think people will be more willing to help and not mock you if it appears you are taking the advice and seeing the results. The next thread you start should be "went to Glasgow auctions, bought 2 very tidy looking xyz and both of them sold within 14 days for a 20% ROI profit! Thanks for the help chaps" instead of "oh look, I bought a car and I've got problems, again"

Plus 1. Or - I finally listened and bought privately/locally.

To be fair to Benji - he listended to us about pictures and prep and has really turned that around.

I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he will physically attend auctions until he gets the feel for things.  I have bought lemons and plenty of them, both 15 years ago from the pitch and now.

Providing like me Benji wins more than he loses, he will do ok.

I have advised him to keep an open mind, rather than searching for specific stock and learn to recognise what has a profit across it, even if it falls outside of his desired profile.

I saw that, he got the praise, it was deserved.

Nobody wants him to fail, well, alright there are probably one or two that would love to see him fail but they're probably bitter old men anyway, but people will grow tired of offering advice and then seeing another "I've got a problem" thread started and it's not a complicated CRA one or mechanical one, it's "my 9 year old Hyundai I bought off the internet has rust"

I think it's frustrating, personally.

A lot of people just want it easy and think the motor trade is an easy living , when its far from it . Same with anything and why FX traders sending signals, get rich quick schemes and the like are always going to exist.

"The purpose of this thread was yet again, you asking for advice when something went wrong"....firstly it's A FORUM isn't that the whole point? Secondly this is a new situation, I've never asked this question before! Seriously come on, not every newbie knows what they are doing, your on a public forum giving advice, moaning about the fact your giving advice which may or may not be taken on board!! If the thought of someone not taking your advice on board annoys you so much, why give it?

“Don't make out like the purpose of this thread was to warn a bunch of seasoned dealers of the pitfalls of buying online from an auction house"....OK, maybe it wasn't but how many of you knew they don't report rust etc? Even if you don't but 09 shitters this may be helpful to other newbies?

"So my question I think is valid, are you REALLY going to get a 6am train to Scotland, to buy stock?"..... No I'm not but that doesn't stop me using them for online buying does it? So following Rory's advice I now know that central might be a good choice, Im not completely ignoring it am I? .

"I think people will be more willing to help and not mock you if it appears you are taking the advice and seeing the results"..... Ben joins forum as complete newbie, asks newbie questions, gets slaughtered, takes advice on board, 2 months later he's sold some cars, got fantastic feed back, made some money, built relationships with local garage and smart repair company, learnt Loads about the trade, made 2 mistakes buying, asked more newbie questions, got slated again, took advice on board again and acted on it, bla bla bla, how the F is that not taking the advice I've received since joining this forum on board? In fact other than physically attending an auction everything else I have listened to and acted on.

Let's just recap why I started this thread, I asked a question because AB didn't report rust on a car I bought, if they had I wouldn't of bought it, how's that my fault? OK if I went there physically I would of seen it, you buy online so you're also at risk of this happening and if it does you have the experience to know what to do, I don't, which is why I joined this forum. How is that me not listening to your previous advice? If me asking relevant questions fucks you off so much why are you even here? You give out advice which is greatly appreciated then jump on my ass for no reason! Then once you've started everyone else jumps on my ass, all because I started a thread advising AB didn't report rust damage on a car I bought Aghhhhhhhh!!

From the videos I followed online I thought that too and even more so after I sold my first car within a few days but I know already that this is one of the most frustrating and hard professions to be in and I do sometimes think why the hell am I doing this, especially when the forum I use to get advice on is like this

No asrse-jumping here.  We just wish you would physically go and see the junk!  Whether it's auction or private or a combination of the two.

After a whole lifetime of looking at cars/being in the game, I still get it wrong occasionally- but, in general I can see a good car a mile off.  Whether that's in the flesh or from an online advert/auction pictures.  This comes from experience.  I also always look at the VOSA Mot history to see if there's any concerns there.

Anyway, I ramble and James is right, it's really frustrating as we've given you tons of advise before and you're not gonna learn without failing and getting out there looking at cars in the flesh will be your best education by far.

You've had lots of offers for PM help and I think maybe you should choose a couple of us you will listen to and make a pledge to follow their advice.

If you buy online- then go and pick it up and inspect before paying or get it delivered by them and do the same before accepting delivery.  My advise once more is still to buy private as you get opportunity to inspect/drive the junk and speak to the current owner.  You need to buy three or four cars, not just one at a time if possible.

hi mr v

this is a car DEALER forum

ie you deal in cars

one of the prerequisites of being successful is learning applying the knowledge and moving on

you say you wont go on the train

that smacks to me of arrogance laziness and you just want a quick buck

either be professional or go off to moneysupermarket . com forum ,i thank you

Am I right in saying you’re trying to specialise in small cars?

Surely as a door stepper you’re much better off getting out and about buying whatever you can that’ll earn you a profit (at minimum, a wage?)

I honestly can’t think of any worse way to spend my day in this trade than trying to buy 9 year old Hyundais online..

So does EPV get the same attitude because he only buys online? Every car I've bought upto now has been online and this is the only one I've complained about regarding condition, again let me remind you, I'm moaning about the fact they don't report rust, that's it.

That's all I asked. The answer is, no you're not.

Instead of "thanks Rory I'll look into that" the answer is "thanks Rory but I'm not going to do that"

James has 'been round the block' now and from where he started and his original post on here-he has done well, learnt plenty and made mistakes along the way.  He isn't as defensive as you Ben.  He also won't just buy one car at a time. Also, look at his stock and you can see the sort of thing you CAN buy online without needing a box of Kleenex on hand to wipe away the tears once you've seen it.

If you're buying a nine year old i10 or an old Corsa or a high mileage Fiesta diesel online then you're asking for trouble.

If you buy them locally, privately or go and see them before bidding then you have more hope of not catching a cold. If you don't inspect upon delivery or go and collect them, the same is true.

I buy very little for the site online from auctions.  Maybe 10%. Dealer Auction, maybe 30%. The rest are private purchases and boy do we have to work/travel to get them from either source.

Again:For a new start, one man band I would just buy private unless you can mirror the stock profile of EPV etc and don't mind the fees.  Your local auction would be a good place to hang around at every sale, if just to get your eye in etc. and you might get the odd couple of cars now and a gain.

Yes, you're right AB were in the wrong, but I would not have taken delivery of the car in the first place.

Rightly or wrongly Ben, you often seem just up for a ruck or in it for a rise half the time when a little humility would go a long way.

We all loved it when you used to say: "what about this car I've seen" but then it turned into Jackanory and you're more defensive than my 18 year old daughter.

Really? You didn't moan about the Corsa from Flipping cars etc?

Just chose a couple on here you will listen to as I say and maybe do it via PM.  Only a suggestion...what do I know...

People, including myself, give you advice. For free, which has taken years and thousands lost to learn. I see a decent bit of advice given and you say "thanks I'll look into that" and I look and think "really? you're going to get a train at 6am to Scotland to buy a car are you?" to which the honest answer is "no, I'm not" and it makes me think you're a bullshitter. You say you're going to do one thing when you have no intention of doing it. It makes me think you're not genuine and doesn't make me want to take time out of my day to help you again.

I talk straight, don't sugar coat and walk the walk.  I don't think you do the same and it frustrates me to see it.

Good advice thank you, I'm defensive when its required, this thread all started because I wanted advice on whether I could return a car or not. I'm new, this is the first time it's happened, how the hell the fact AB fucked this report up has anything to do with my progress so far I don't know. My point is, look where we are now again, completely off subject its ridiculous, the thread wasn't "I bought a rusty i10, I'm crying and don't know what to do" was it? I wasn't asking for any of the advice given in this thread, you lot jump on it, give the advice the start moaning it's hilarious!!!

I'll say one more thing on this then I will just leave it.

You're missing the point entirely.

First it was a high mileage diesel fiesta, ok not great but don't buy that sort of thing again Benji, not likely to be a winner long term. Then it was "shall I or shan't I" buy this Corsa which turned into the sort of decision making process I usually reserve for a holiday destination not a stock purchase. Then it was an Astra, if I remember rightly, same thing, a saga, from memory it was possibly an issue with HPI etc. Now you've bought a 9 year old Hyundai. In silver. Online.

You have been advised, sensibly, to go and buy sensible, low mileage, clean cars from private sellers who have got their price badly wrong where you drive it, inspect it, negotiate, take it off them for low money, few scratches polished up, MOT and oil service and wallop. Success. Yet despite the arduous process you seem to go through buying stock, the advice given, you are buying 9 year old Korean shit online. It's not even about fucking AB anymore, it's about you asking for advice, being given it and then not taking it!

I've said enough, my lot number is coming up and I'm going to attempt to buy a car here and know why I'm doing it. Good luck Benji.

OK, fair enough but come on, your using a couple of replies on a forum to make that judgement and you have no real reason to come to that conclusion. Also, I didn't reply to Rory saying "fantastic, I will certainly get the train" I said I have an account with them and will try them next, so that's not really fair. Anyway this has gone far enough off topic now can we leave it at that?
