Land Rover Disco (on French plates) RHD

Guys,

Back in 2013, I bought my Dad a 58 plate Land Rover Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE for about £27,000.  He lives in France and re-registered the car on French plates (car is RHD UK car).  At 78, the car is too much for them now and they want to move it on as they are moving back to UK this summer.

Rather than go through all the hassle of re-registering the car in UK, do any of you know anyone who takes, or is interested in this car as it is (on french plates).

It's a 58 plate, he has all docs French and UK log books, original sales invoice from when I bought it and it has 74k on the clock and loads of history.  Just had turbo replaced at cost of almost 5,000 Euros at Land Rover.

He's just looking to get out of it - any advice welcome as to where I can move it on (i.e. anyone who has connections in France or dealing with French regsitered vehicles/specialists) - it's too lumpy for me or does anyone want a PX deal on a smaller more economical SUV or Cross-over type vehicle?

Most of the jobs on these pieces of shit require the body to be removed to gain access.

it seems the guys that designed them drew inspiration from their radio controlled cars they owned as children, not realising in the real world that removing a 1 ton body full of electrics is a “big job”

it was probably 800 euros in parts and the rest in labour.

I'm trying to advise him to re-register the car in UK when he moves back.  Yes, they are expensive to own but nonetheless, they are very desirable and once UK registered, with that mileage and full HSE spec, will sell like hot cakes if priced realistically.

He is falling in that trap of, I've just spent £5k, if I sell it for £10k, I will only have realised £5k for what is a £10-12k truck.

I went out in it yesterday and a working Disco, is a sublime drive IMO.

I personally am trying to stay out of the deal for obvious reasons.  I bought it as a gift to him for being a fantastic Dad but I'm not interested in moving it on.

It's the electronic control unit on the turbo that fails for a pass time. Originally a body off the chassis job, buy inventive people have designed tools to do the job of undoing bolts that you cannot see without splitting the vehicle. Still a mammoth job. Not for the feint hearted.

If it was previously uk registered it won’t be a hassle to re register here and far easier to sell RHD here and should bring more money than over there. It’s same as selling LHD over here you are ruling  out 99% of buyers

I agree but when I spoke to DVLA, they said he has to be resident in the UK before they will transfer it (he doesn't move back for a couple of months).  We thought about transfering it to me to sell but they said I will have to pay import tax???

we are still in the eu all you would need is proof the car originated and was first registered in the uk so you dont need a stiffcat like you would from say the isle of man

not sure about the domain issue but i would have thought as soon as dad stepped into the uk and was to domicile here then a british log book to help the authorities would be to their benefit as then they can charge you road tax

Why would you have to pay import tax? Surely all duties would have been paid when it was registered new here they can’t have it twice...... or can they??

Mark, your making much more of registrating the car than is the reality.

Apply for the log book in whichever name you want, at your address. You obviously have the French log book (it doesn’t matter who’s name is on it) so you’ll get the new log book back within a fortnight. Tbh it’s quicker than applying for a ‘missing’ UK logbook on a car you’ve bought at the block.

Thanks BHM - this seems to be the general concensus and I was fed duff information from DVLA, whilst trying to explain it to my ageing Dad whom still struggles to use a mobile phone
