The new MOT

Does anyone have an opinion on the new changes to the MOT. Apparently grading between minor, major and dangerous. Checking DPF is in place! and zerio smoke emissions for diesels. EML light on! And relaxed criteria for windscreen chips.

It was only a matter of time before they started cracking down on people removing EGR etc. Should make MOT a bit of a lottery for a while

thanks for bringing this to our attention, the good news is advisories are out :lol:

the word minor used instead =

minor - defects having no significant effect on the safety of the vehicle or impact on the environment and other minor non-compliances. If only defects of a minor nature are present a test certificate will still be issued :)

I wonder if wer're going to be spending time replacing EGR's and DPF that have 'gone missing' in the cars history. As  I understand it, if it was originally fitted it needs to be 'present' when tested?

There's a great thread on this forum showing some of the ridiculous 'advisories' that we've all experienced

So we'll now be selling cars with MInor 'faults' instead... that sounds easier to explain to a layman than an advisory :rolleyes:

Anyone got a link to an official piece of guidance on any of this? All I've found is scaremongering red top articles.

Not sure what the implications are when the customer presents the car for its next MOT and fails because EGR/DPF has been removed historically?

thanks met, so, we have just about 99% lost the advisories, but its now even more important to do a pdi before test as we dont want a "dangerous" on any history ;).

i prefer "minor" to "advise" as a used car with  "minor" eg corrosion to exhaust system sounds better than "advice" corrosion to exhaust system ?

its all draft at the minute and with any "draft" they usually just close the door ;), not saying its not going through but can be tweaked before may.

in reference to dpf question, its quite simple =

Diesel particulate filters (DPF) should be checked for evidence that the DPF has been removed or otherwise tampered with. Where a DPF canister has clearly been cut open and re-welded, it should be rejected unless evidence can be provided that the canister was cut open for legitimate reasons, such as filter cleaning.

the egr question answered by "missing or obviously defective"

and for you oldies, a plastic flip front [grp] on a mini should fail [ major !] :D

Thanks for the information:) What about diesel smoking..... surely that is a death penalty..... ?

In Nov 2017 an investigation found thousands of UK drivers are illegally driving modified cars without diesel exhaust filters. 

It was February 2014 when MOT’s started to include a check to see if the filter was present however, from May 2018 the DVSA plan to introduce changes to the emission test that will improve their ability to detect filters that have been tampered with. 

Over 1800 diesel cars since 2014 in the UK have been found by the DVSA to be on the road without the legally required diesel particulate filters and without action the figure is likely to rise as consumers and those in the trade view it as a potential solution to issues.  However, the pollution produced by the particulate matter in the diesel fumes can be damaging to the heart and lungs as well as unborn children in the womb.  Noxious fumes created by diesel engines have been linked by The World Health Organisation to 38,000 premature deaths every year. 

Interestingly, the procedure to remove the filter is legal although driving the car without it is illegal ...and any vehicle found with a modified filter will be subject to a fine of £1,000 for a car or £2,500 for a van!

The DVSA Chief Executive Gareth Llewellyn is quoted as saying, “Vehicles found to have tampered with or missing DPF filters will fail their MOT...the DVSA continues to pursue such offences and will take action against any MOT garages found to be conducting illegal modifications.” 

In September last year two mechanics from Sheffield were banned from MOT testing for two years for carrying out DPF removal and advertising the service as the practice brings the MOT scheme into disrepute. 

DPF removal is not a remedy or a repair in accordance with the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and we wouldn't advise it is offered as such under any circumstance.

Yup, and still plenty of companies still offering DPF removal, even today with 'it won't fail MOT' statements, a quick google will show that.

Hate remaps too, these must by default, corrupt the emissions calibration of an engine.

Loud exhausts another pet hate, can't be louder than an OE system but go to London and you need ear plugs nowadays.
