Well the Tax spiral has now been answered. 

Any diesel car that doesn't meet latest emissions (Euro 6 currently) purchased after April 2018 will pay 1 tax band higher than its current band for the first 12 months and roll back consecutively there after. 

Will this hinder diesel sales? Probably, but after the first year it will still be cheaper than most bigger petrol's and mpg will obviously be better.

Under the changes, new diesel cars registered from 1 April 2018 will be hit with higher tax unless they conform to the latest real world driving standards, the RAC says. "Current beleaguered owners of diesel cars can breathe a sigh of relief that they will not be punished further by the Treasury."

Yes I know never said it wasn't! Any diesel failing to meet euro 6 excluding vans.

Wrong! New diesels are cleaner they are punishing older diesels.

even itv news got it wrong, heres the fact =

a Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) supplement that will apply to new diesel cars frst registered from 1 April 2018, so that their First-Year Rate will be calculated as if they were in the VED band above. This will not apply to next-generation clean diesels – those which are certifed as meeting emissions limits in real driving conditions, known as Real Driving Emissions Step 2 (RDE2) standards
