  1. Alfa romeo's, lovely cars but just give grief. We have a 09 plate mito in the workshop now which is mainly based on a punto and it still giving us grief.

Some people hate vauxhalls which I admit do go wrong a lot but the issues are so common they are straightforward to fix. parts are cheap and plentiful

French cars are a pain, I will not buy 308, will buy 207, new shape megan is a decent car, scenic pre 2009 was a dog.

  2. They do check the credit file of applicants, where I think you are getting confused is credit scoring.

Most prime lenders use scorecards to approve finance, A few details in the system and yes or no given.

With sub prime it's more based on the person's ability to pay, balanced against  their credit history. Manual underwriting.

  3. We have designed our own website using wix. We used it for the auction businesses few years back with success. Ours is due to go live next week with the launch of or new pitch company.

If you can use a platform like wix or fasthosts then its worth doing, save money and not have to keep updating via 3rd party.

March was tough, but we've had a good April, current count of 54 sales with 25% finance pen, against a holding stock of 65.

In regards to diesels, we have seen a change in some consumers, but not enough to worry just yet. I agree with some people above that petrols are less grief, but this will be short lived as forced induction/small displacement becomes the norm. Vw's TSI can be grief, Peugeot/citroen THP engine is grief, Ford eco boost is getting bad press too. petrol is only more reliable because it's simpler, this will soon not be the case, as manufacturers focus is turning to increasing petrol efficiency as they did diesel.

As long as we don't go back to horse and cart we should all still have a job.

  5. it doesn't matter if your pitch is £500per month or £2000 per month, its all the other costs on top like staff, rates, insurance, consumables, warranty payments etc that add up. I know guys selling 20 cars a month and not even breaking even some months, and others selling 5-8 a month and live like kings.

So today, browsing through the buy now cars.. I see a 14plate car which books at £10500. With a buy now price of £1000!

i thought "too good to be true" and clicked buy now!!

What are the chances they aren't going to honour the sale?

Or will they just cancel it?

Stand your ground and go all the way lol :D Turn up for it asking for the keys.

Wait til the finance company starts telling you you need to do it... despite numerous items of evidence showing it was free from fault at time of sale.

Yes, I am dreading this when I get my first rejection from Finance.  I hope the case that lawgistics won the other month will start a change of tack from finance houses working more closer with dealers to resolve issues rather than reject and run. We know there are good finance houses who will work with dealers and some who seem to be acting like a sour of sh*t.

Look forward to hearing about your pending case @Rory RSC hope it goes your way.

We've been relatively lucky with comebacks until tonight. A car sold 4 months ago done over 2000 miles and he wants us to pay for 3 shock absorbers as main dealers have told him they have been gone 'a long time'. Luckily we had the car serviced and checked out before sale so we know everything was spot on. Some customers are ridiculous.

I would never agree to this. this is why service report or pdi sheet is vital.

Another very quiet weekend, apart from a guy trying via text to convince me his modified chavved up W reg Golf GTI was worth £2500 on a PX against a 07 Golf TSI GT.. Spent a day last week re photographing and re wording adverts snipped £50-£100 off here and there. Rapidly approaching two very quiet months on the trot.

£2.5K for a bad ass Golf on the W plate, Did you keep his number sounds a right trinket :P

Sold an old punto that came in chop today, the old man came back for it. Was getting worried as we had not heard from him, I would of hated for something terrible to happen to him before purchasing one of my fine chariots.

    Same here.

£1300 Beetle sold and 2 months and 2000 miles later i get a call saying its broken down. Its at the garage. I said no probs, whats the mileage now..... I don't know..... I tell you what, i'll call the garage. I spoke to them, he explained it had a clogged oil strainer or something and that it'd starved the engine and was going to be about a £1000 job. Whats the mileage I asked politely. I'll let you know tomorrow he said.

I hear nothing for 4 days and then customer texts me the £1100 invoice and asks for a resolution as she's out of pocket after having the car repaired!

    what was the outcome

I think my comment was fuelled by a 50 mile drive to see a "perfect" 4x4 X Trail which turned out to be a scruffy 2WD X Trail.

    2wd 4x4's, :D

I bought a RAV 4 2wd once, It would've been easier to sell bacon to the arabs than sell that thing, The amount of people who came to view only to drive off when finding out it was 2wd. In the end I sold to a lady who wanted it to put her wheelchair in and wanted high driving position, she didn't care it was 4wd or steam driven.

Never mind @Mojo121 a nice trip out to the block for some overpriced metal should cheer you up :P

You've set up a business but you don't know where to get stock from?!

    Auctions are overpriced and oversubscribed.

    eBay is full of rubbish.

Private ads are most likely hiding a problem.

Other dealers selling ''cheap px's'' are probably hiding a problem and if they're not why aren't they making money on them?

    Facebook is junk.

How many will you stock and do you want to sell a month, what market are you aiming at and what's a good living to you? I'll tell you if I think it's possible.

Do you not buy stock then Mojo has you have just ruled out all the options

We are in the north west, on the Yorks/Lancs border.

Looking at the £2.5k - £6k end of the market, 4-8 year old small and family stuff. Not really interested in sports/prestige, I tend to look out for low mileage, good historied run of the mill cars, always seemed to do ok.

To be honest, I'm not sure how much demand there is for finance for this type but if it results in sales we wouldn't otherwise get, then it must be worthwhile. The whole sub-prime market interests me...I feel there must be a market for better quality cars but perhaps your typical sub-prime client just wants maximum flash?

As I say, it's a new area for me....spent years and years with a 'banger pitch' in a large city that did very well back in the 90s but that end of the market would fill me with dread nowadays, what with everyone being a consumer law specialist in their spare time.

Glad to hear your not opening up on my patch ;) Only kidding lol. We are due to open our new pitch in this field in less than 2 weeks time.

IMO near / sub prime is the future, there is lots of lenders out there offering finance, and there is no trying to smartly price your vehicles to compete with the dealer next door or AT. If you work it right it can work very well. fellow traders I know have moved into this field in the last few years and its changed there lives.

Lots of fellow traders recommend First response, well worth having on your lending panel. I myself intend to sign up with them this week all being well.

Good luck, and keep in touch with the forum, there are some great guys on here with lots of experience and wisdom.

  14. If you have the confidence to get back into it from the word go buy taking on a unit then fair play, but maybe get yourself back into it more gentle as a lot has changed.

Advertising is a big killer, if you want the best chance of selling metal then Autotrader is the one but it's very expensive to throw 20 cars on. if you can master facebook and advertise on its platforms then do it, it's the future and will bring in customers at the fraction of AT.

Consumer rights and finance is a little odd at the min, choose your finance company well, some are acting unfair to dealers and just rejecting cars at the first sign of trouble, others will work with you and care about their dealer relationships.

Self admin warranties ;) its the future, dont waste your time with conventional warranty firms. they just take your money and weasel out of everything.

I am about to open a 2nd site for subprime customers, similar stock numbers and price bracket as you. In this game you learn all the time, knowledge is priceless

  15. Learn something new. To be fair I have borrowed a plate to a fellow trader once or twice think twice next time. We have always been lucky round are end of the country, never seem to ever get pulled on trade plates. Plod just doesn't seem bothered in traders near us, to busy dealing with the local youth sniffing sellotape and stealing chomps.

Can there not be some kind of trade status check to stop Joe Public signing up?

Even a copy of motor trade insurance would be a starting point!

Bloody punters posting on our forum, I come on  here to get away from them tyre kicking :D
