  1. If customer is driving car off your pitch and you logged it on the MID  with your insurer then if they have an accident and they werent insured then 3rd parties could be looking to your insurer for compo, this is why i immediately remove any car sold off the MID straight away if ive logged them on,i know a trader who got caught with this dont know the outcome mind

  2. In order to try and prove we look after our stock do you think something like a weekly checklist would be worthwhile doing ?

Something like check fluids, tyre pressures, lights etc and then a 5 minute test drive ? We have around 10 cars in stock at anyone time so it's not a massive issue if it takes an hour of our time and we do have to move the cars between lock up and office for viewings. I'm also going to look at some form of pdi sheet too. We could then use the weekly sheet to prove we regularly checked the cars in the event of any issues later down the line.

    pdi before offered for sale

    idealy also a fresh mot

these two things will help very much if you ever end up in court protecting your reputation/wallet

no matter how much love and attention my babies get they always get the oil and water checked prior to customer collection for my own piece of mind as cars like babies can dribble inbetween,if customers wants to take straight away then pretend you are showing them where they are like you would go through the procedure to key hand out anyway, ive just failed today to find the dipstick on a renault i got in today ,i only found it by following the route it took from the sump, 1400 petrol, cars hate em at times

  3. hi steve

    a few questions

what does your insurer say about unacompanied test drives

how can they be done without  trade plates ie not taxed

how can you be sure your vehicle is not being abused if unacompanied

your paperwork needs to be imaculate if you do do this and the nips appear

why do it anyway surely going with a customer is poart of the patter to nail a sale

are you aware the car plates need covering up on a test drive whilst trade plates are fitted to the front and rear of the vehicle

    cheers

  4. £500 road tax - is not an issue if the buyer wants that car ! 18 months a ago I Had a Nissan Munaro 3.5 Petrol, mine was a newer model 2007 - at £500 - he'd also been looking at older 05 plate at I think £280 road tax , I said he was put off at the £500 road Tax - I said but its not £500 - its £220 more per year , thats all and you're getting a lot newer car , one owner etc etc - his answer " You're right - I never saw it that way only £500 - but I'd be paying £280 anyway" SOLD !

well sorry but i see it as a tenner a week and two weeks off for good behaviour:o

i love taxing my cars at £30 a year or £3 and an apple via direct debit per month:P

fix any gremlins before the header board goes in or point them out to customer during sale

back up by getting customer to countersign both pdi and sales invoice where everything is in writing including no eml light was on during the sale and after test drive, you must do test drives

how much is a small yard and 7 spaces? have you got a good roadside position is it cost viable,?ive found that people are more willing to travel with the help of a satnav these days if you have what they want, have you considered specialising in one make/model ? c1's for example ?

  7. i was with bollington for years,no probs, just make sure you get the extra insurance in case you need to make a claim off a 3rd party

im with lv now thay came via my broker and it was a stonking deal

warranties ,nap done in house, cant imagine doing it any other way really at the lower end,i know my place:D

  9. hi simon, for once in my life im going to be blunt

    dont do it

    keep the boring job

a £5000 investment  is only  going to get you  bogged down with scrappers in no time or an expensive big lemon

are you thinking of working from home

what are you going to do if the first car you buy non of the electric windows dont work like on that car programme last night

what would you do like on another thread on here where a body computer has had probably water ingress and failed and its a dealer part plus then having it coded it

modern cars you need more than an interest to keep in front of them and not have customers back at your door

put the £5000 into an isa mine made me £134  or buy a car you can run and sell at a later date

  10.

    So just to confirm this.

In the above scenario would it be acceptable to just give the customer back 2995 even though their old car is sat on the forecourt. If they demand the old car back do they have any rights at all?

if you put yourself in the seat of the customer and you were sold a lemon and your p/x was a peach you would want it back and probably go to law to enforce it

    me?

i wont touch a p/x car for 2 weeks so i know customer is happy with the car i sold them or as is usual its a scrapper and they definately wont be coming back wanting it

did i mention i always hold onto log books 2 weeks too just in case

strangely just had a letter from dvla as a new owner has sent off new keeper supplement a week after purchase....oh dear they do cause us problems and in the letter from the dvla they want the chassis rubbing with a pencil, well i aint going to his house to do some etchings

  11. the link is to a private account not a business account ,that would be a big no for me because it suggests no premises to return the vehicle to for any faults after sale ,have you spoken to any of the fellas on the phone? i

starter motors clog up with dmf failing fillings so maybe and especially 100,000 is the time for another clutch and flywheel

  12. yes split the keys

its so so easy to be busy and customers always seem to slip these in their pockets after a perusal if youve given them the keys, keep them in a safe like i do and its an extra carrot to dangle them in the conversation that you do indeed have another set as you close the sale

with regards the internet scam its one of the reasons i would never sell a car on auction,i use buy it now if its a trade p/x i dont want to bring up to spec

  13. I believe that legally every car should  be checked before it is put on sale, it also covers you if an incident occurs on a test drive in so much as you can prove the car was roadworthy. Allowing a customer to drive an unsafe car I'm guessing is a criminal offence.

yes never take a car out unles pdi.d this is why i never drive cars back from the auction anymore as ive had some real scary things done to cars prior to them being entered at auction from all sources

anyway why let the customer hear the rattle before you do

i always equate it to a record from the 1970,s ie first impressions are lasting impressions,99% of customers cannot get a vista of a fully prepped ready to go car so if its not ready for retail dont offer it,it just confuses the poor loves

  14. work out how much use it will get over a set period say next 5 years to decide if new is the way especially if not doing lots of distance work

mines parked up more than its used so old but well maintained is the way i like it

be aware vosa have more powers than the police and certainly round my way they do more car transporter weight checks than anything else these days and are particularly against a trailer being pulled behind if tach rules not adhered to

    i wouldnt buy a ransid

  15. i wouldnt do it for 2 reasons

1 your insurer might argue that car was not business or private use seeing as not registered in your name if a claim was made

2 the office junior at dvla will tell you anything so they get you off the phone

3 ok first line a lie, dvla are hopeles at tax and send me refunds like confetti but i wont cash them because tomorrow they want them back, youve all been warned

    4 KISS is the answer:)

  16.  we really need to look at a proper licenseing system for traders like they have in America for example

When i first started in the motor trade there were only 2 companies i could find that did trade insurance, one of them was norwich union and before they would quote me they wanted proof i had done motortrading, so it was a catch 22,i eventually persuaded them to take me on at terms of about£2000 a year i remember this as it was a direct debit and it was a lot of money then as now, then i had the grief of trying to get the local trade plate monster giver to tick his boxes to give me a set,boy was all this hard, what im trying to say is we all had to start somewhere so even though im not a kerbside trader too many rules could stifle new blood and anyway if people would prefer to buy from a laybye then let them get on with it because we all know it will end in tears

  17. you can still check mot via the tax online site for p/x etc cars prior to doing the deal

ive no idea when the history check will be back online but i spent an hour trying to get through to vosa bristol monday morning and the system either kept kicking me out or once i got through i got kicked of the system again,im not sure if anyone is aware but vosa ok dvsa  haven't been taking staff on for a few years now and if you go into their facebook page (or matters of testing) they are now desperate for qualified testers, but be aware before you apply:lol: their new contract of employment allows them to use you in any hour in the 24 hour clock

i would advise that once the system comes back online you do a history check and keep  a record before log book goes to swansea, this way if you ever need this information in a small claims court you would have it at your disposal and not be dependent on the claimant furnishing it
