Anyone else think if they get a 30 day right to refund on our cars due to faults etc that we should get the same on their part exchanges?

    Fair is fair .

Agree! Also, getting your car MOT'd every year doesn't count as a full service history!

  2. The thing I've seen is a tray about the size of a cat litter tray. You set off the chemicals and stick it in the car overnight. Comes with a warning sticker. In the US they have something similar to kill 'bugs and critters' :D

  3. I've got a focus here at the moment that has a strong stale smoke odour. To be fair its the worst I've had, guy must have been in a family of chain smokers. Now, I seem to remember there is a 'chemical thing' you can leave in the car overnight to get rid of the smell, anyone used it?

Is there no way you can keep it going without stock funding? Overdraft or loan, get some cheaper stock in and turn them over and try and build it back up?

    This!

Build it up again, many of us have had to do it at one time or another. If you think things are bad wait until you get divorced! lol

So I have an A3 with a windscreen chip which is just off from the drivers line of view - had it repaired today by a mobile guy and it's much better but it's still quite noticeable in my opinion and gets on my nerves as I'm a little bit of a perfectionist . Would you leave it if you were me ? What do you tend to do?

I've had a similar problem. I found a windscreen guy that would give me a decent discount if I took the car to his workshop which happens to be about a mile from me. But sometimes the repairs are better than others. The excuse offered is usually something to do with how long the chip has been exposed to dirt and contaminents?

  6. Too much 'skullduggery' still going on with salvage. And as already mentioned, not enough profit margin. I've noticed Autotrader are now indicating cars that are 'written off' but I don't think private buyers still really understand

  7. I've been pondering the possibility of having another string to my bow by starting car delivery alongside my car sales. I've dealt with many 'trade plate' drivers over the years and understand the job. I seem to spend a lot of time around car auctions anyway and I feel it could be a good fit?

Unfortunately it just comes with the job.

I had one yesterday...... that actually bought a car. You just don't know, there is no way of telling either. I just treat everyone as if they are going to buy a car and one day they may, or their family may, or friends or someone that saw the facebook post where they tagged themselves at your forecourt.

This is exactly the attitude to take

  9. The only problem is it will cut down on the deathtraps that the auction can legally sell on so somebody will be stuck with them or they will need to be scrapped.

Which is exactly why the auction houses dont want to return to the 'bad old days' when they had to dance to the tune of the motor trade.

    'home-trader' problem?

I'm a 'home trader', what's the problem? Or are we all being tarred with being illegal traders now, regardless...

  10.

Exactly...So why do the auction houses allow it? obviously because they are out for every penny and do not give a damn who buys the cars. I have said before on another thread that i do not see how a "private" buyer can go along to a trade auction ie sold as seen and legitimately  buy a car and then get in it and drive down the motorway. Just does not seem realistic these days.

Because there's no such thing as 'trade' auction any more. Everyone is 'trade' nowadays, everyone wants to pay wholesale price; its a thing! costco and Makro are also booming, same issue. Sadly buying 'trade/wholesale' is no longer a secret society

  11. Agree Gavin, a local chap sold a £500 pug 206 in the last week or so - customer took it to Halfords to get it checked over after purchase. Were told front 2 tyres were low. Customer rings local chap rather worked up 'What are you gonna do about it? I have young children in this car!'  Tires were low and worn but not illegal.

On a £500 car I would say that is probably rather lucky, we all see what £500 gets you in an auction and it is not a lot.

I don't think there's many cars currently advertised for under £1000 that would pass a Halfords 'special' inspection!

  12. I forgot to mention that obviously there are two Manheim trade accounts, 'basic trade' and 'national buyer', but the OP can upgrade when he meets the requirements. ;)

Looks like Manheim have gone the same way as BCA and now offer a range of cards depending on your buying level, which probably makes more sense. Not sure how the  'buyers fees' compare as yet. Manheim have dropped the yearly subscription fee for first time set up.

  13. what about ChipsAway?

Depends how good the operator is? Usually if you keep your eyes and ears open you will find who your local traders use. Large auction sites can be a useful resource as lots of trades people are often around; locksmiths, screen chips, wheel refurb etc.
