They eat coil packs and injectors, the last one we took in had just had 4 new injectors fitted by BMW under warranty, the one previous cost us 6 coil packs and a cam sensor.

if it is as simple as a coil pack fit a genuine one, they are more expensive but they are better quality

It's not only BMW, there is a huge difference in quality between genuine factory items and pattern parts. Regardless of what ECP tells us! Lots of workshops I know have stopped using ECP and GSF for parts. I was in my local garage a while back and he was on the phone to ECP "explaining" about the failed oil sensor on an M3, and the subsequent recovery for a customers car from the south coast! Interesting phone call!

You an ex smoker metcars? I'd be more concerned about the co2 from the cars passing through the hall than a few fellas having a sleekit puff.

Not forgetting "vaping " too. Who wants to walk around blowing out clouds of strawbwerry steam?:D

I can't think of another business premises where they ignore people smoking. Try and smoke in a supermarket and see what happens:D

Just an observation but if you do the "tax on the green slip thing" on an auction purchase that's been "put to trade", you're liable for a "no current keeper showing" tug from coppers on a quiet day.

  4. Good topic. I'm Mike. Been in the trade since the early '90s. Two divorces and I've been a single parent for nearly 20yrs, which has been more of a struggle than work to be fair. Working from home these days, given up empire building:D

I've often wondered if this forum needs a 'lounge' or 'off topic' for socialising.

My closest tyre shop in National Tyres so chances of building up a friendly relationship are very slim, its like a bloody episode of the Walking dead in there, the staff are like zombies! Puts me half to sleep when i have to wait there and watch them take an eternity to change a tyre.

OK, fair enough. The place I use is along a small independent place on a busy high street with lots of large dealerships so they are used to traders;)

But, it is something that you grow out of. I think that depending on your age, you either see, two beautiful Ferrari's or two huge piles of cash?:D

My nearest tyre shop is a 20 mins away and being on my own i simply don't have the time to take the car to a tyre shop, wait there to get booked in and drive back if i can do it myself on site.

I usually get them off by hammering a slightly oversized socket over the locking nut but if there is a tool that actually does the job then i'll give it a try.

I'm on my own too, and I find that having a friendly tyre depot is a must, once they know you're a regular you'll get a better deal and jump the queue. I even sold a car to my tyre guy?:D

oddly enough i no longer hold any interest in cars these days so what ever is floating around that is taxed and has fuel, back in the day when they where giving money away like sweets had some lovely cars these days rather see the money sitting in a property than a car.

Sadly, its where I am too. It makes me shudder when I read about guys 'smoking around' in a nearly new BMW. Although back when I was in my 20s/30s I probably wouldn't have been able to keep my hands out of the cookie jar either:D

You need one of the removal tools that has some really soft sockets you bash over them and then remove.

about £100 we got it off snap on man but not a snap on part.

    Spare tips ebay.

We we have started to take a picture of them at same time as photographing the car.

Absolute pain and one of the worst things ever created.

This. I think Euro Car Parts were doing a kit like this last time I was in there.

  10. I ran an old diesel 4x4 for 10yrs. It did everything other than a track day. Towed my bangers, carried white goods home from Makro without having to put the back seat down, even slept in it once. But the winter and snow experience wasn't what you'd expect. I'm guessing it depends on whether you live in a rural location or inner city, but I live in North East London and regardless of how capable your 4x4 is, if the council/police shut the road because of snow you've had it; if the super hero in front of you gets stuck and blocks the road, you've had it; everybody wants a tow then complains about damage afterwards; Nobody seems to understand the consequences of using a kinetic tow rope. These days when it snows I prefer to stay indoors:)

The latest car that I I've purchased, so I can scrutinise it for faults before it's advertised.

I find it the only way, otherwise you get customers phoning or calling back once sold with stupid complaints like squeaky wipers, tracking off a tad, pollen filter blocked etc.

I used to do this, but however thorough you are, after a couple of weeks sitting on the lot, it will develop a puncture/misfire/exhaust blow the first time you start it up:D

i do have two local traders who do it as a side line and i move this stock into them, once you set yourself up as a garage they throw every trick in the book at you but oddly enough when they buy them from my mates they never get grief.

Its odd how, and I know its a contentious subject, but there 'is' a place for 'bottom end' traders?
