A 2nd vote for Ashley at UK Global, however Aston Lark came up trumps for me this year with AXA, and I was also on the NIG deal last year.

Just had a telephone call from Aston Lark insurance informing me policy is due beginning of May. I placed my business with them last year after an introduction via the IMDA membership and to be fair they came back with a very good quote using NIG together with a few little sweetners, 0% finance on all monthly payments, anyone can drive on my policy with my permission for business use, handy when you can rope a few people in to drive stuff back from the auctions. It would appear now though they have kicked NIG into touch and all future business is going through AXA. I have not a had a renewal quote as of yet but as we are all sitting at home trying to keep ourselves busy now is an ideal to have a bit ring around to get some additional quotes.

Any recommendations for a decent reliable broker?

Hi all it's been a while. I have been away and have been ill!

My son's insurance is due for renewal in a couple of weeks.

He trades from home part time.

His new quote from bollington is £1900. After phoning them he got it to £1600 and the rep was pushy for him to buy it.

    The quote includes

1450 insurance plus a 12% insurance premium tax but won't this be included in the actual premium? Then there's the £150 admin fee... Yes! And £70 for MID management and legal cover.

Rep was pushy saying this is based on your risk.

BUT dont you think insurance will go down now? Because the risk is reduced? We're not trading nor buying due to coronavirus !!

He doesn't want to commit to it and pay for 3-6 months without being able to trade. Even the 6-9 months thereafter business will be down as people won't be looking to spend much post coronavirus...

Hi TangoVictor, sorry to hear you have been unwell i hope you are feeling better.
I am a motor trade specialist insurance broker offering a personal service and competitive premiums. If you would like to give me a call on Monday I would be delighted to see if I can source the right cover for your Son and would look to save him some money. We understand that in these uncertain times you need to reduce overheads where possible and I can tell you we would certainly not charge you for updating your MID.

I don’t get the ‘part time’ thing.  It’s not a job that you start and finish at fixed times like working a lathe? Your stock is insured 24/7, you’re advertising 24/7, the only real difference is that you have less opportunities to make yourself available to customers. But to be fair many of us one man bands are chasing the clock all the time too!

Hi Metcars, yes that is a fair point and I would tend to agree with your reasoning. However insurers work In mysterious ways and therefore if you have another occupation you are classed as 'part-time' meaning you get a discount on your trade insurance.

    Thanks,

I too don’t know how insurance companies work but as well as the NCB, the policy was loaded & his next year’s bill (which I saw) more than doubled to over £8K and that was after he’d pared back cover. Over the next few years it must of cost him a five figure sum, all for someone who walked away financially scott free. click here

    Hi Jason,

That's a very good example of how damaging it can be to your insurance and ultimately your finances, it can get even more messy if a customer was in a courtesy car hit a pedestrian and they were seriously hurt, these kind of claims can spiral into the hundreds of thousands and a claim of this size would increase your insurance premium in a big way, it could even make your business 'uninsurable' or your business may not be able afford such inflated insurance premiums that it leads to the business itself closing.

I think its fair to say always tread very carefully when giving cars out to customers and be mindful of the risks this poses to your insurance and even your livelihood if things go wrong.

Hi AShley ,this is very sound advice you give.

I can relate a story that crushed a business due to a car crash whilst a loan car was used too,I  would never do it as most customers think they can abuse the privilege they are offered, even simple things like speeding tickets are a nightmare as you chase up the hopefully signed paperwork the customer signed thus ensuring you as the named owner doesn't take their sp60

Nap not for me,theycan take shanks's pony

Yes it is certainly a risk in a number of ways, I am a insurance broker specialising in the motor trade sector so as you can imagine I see these things happen quite often. That is a great point you make about speeding offences or points incurred whilst the customer has the courtesy car, even parking tickets incurred will come to you as the owner of the vehicle. That's why I give a 'loan vehicle form' to all of my clients who have the courtesy car cover, as long as the customer signs the form they accept full liability in the event of points incurred / speeding tickets / parking fines and even the maintainence of the vehicle is put onto the customers head (oil, tyres properly inflated etc)

Some of my clients also put 'excess clauses' into the courtesy car agreement, meaning in the event of an accident or damage caused to the vehicle the customer has to pay an inflated excess or lump sum.

It is also recommended to take copies of driving licenses and carry out checks to ensure they have the relevant license and they are not banned or disqualified.

    Hi guys,

    I hope you're all well.

So I'm new to the business and looking to start out with maybe 1 car at a time in the hope to sell 3-4 cars a month, however I've hit a major snag after putting in the research for the last 2 weeks I probably should have checked motor trade insurance prices first - bummer!

Phoned up Bollington insurance which I've read people got good deals from on here and was quoted over £3,000 for the year, which I just can't afford. The kind chap however did say that I'd be maybe best going down the temporary insurance route for each car I get so it allows me to drive it home etc for around £50 a car.

The only issue I then seen was what if a buyer wants to test drive the car, would they require to be insured or do most buyers just chance it? As I'm sure there are many private sellers out there just selling the odd car without motor trade insurance.

And if the buyer did just chance it on a test drive and we got pulled over by the police who would be at fault and be hit with the points?

    Appreciate any feedback.

Hi Mark, I am a motor trade specialist insurance broker and I would be happy to put a quotation together for you to see if we can obtain a cheaper premium, starting any business is tough and it's important to try and keep the overheads down where possible. I have helped lots of new traders get started with their first trade insurance  at a reasonable price. Feel free to contact me on 07590635644. Thanks, Ashley

I was under the impression that P/T was intended for someone who was for example working as a 'GP' for 5 days a week and a car dealer for two, hence part time?:D

Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if P/T insurance actually worked out more expensive

Part-Time trade insurance is generally cheaper as you have a secondary occupation meaning less time spent on the cars, less stock around you so less risk to insurers

Thinking of running a Courtesy car, got a cheap low mileage 2010 KA last week. Insurance want a massive £115 to add it on to the end of the Policy (December).

Only thing that puts me off is risking our NCB.

    Thoughts please guys?

Courtesy cars do seem like a good idea at first as they are a useful tool for your business, giving a courtesy car adds that extra touch to your service. However, if the worst happens and a claim occurs that turns out to be the customers fault, it's your trade insurance that will take the hit, this can be very damaging to your claims record and can significantly increase your premium when your renewal comes around. If you do decide to give out courtesy cars it is strongly recommended that you manage it carefully and only give them to trusted customers.
