I'm not sure if I'm living in a parallel universe, but Cazoo are making a big thing about delivering a car to you. We have been doing this to customers, the small minority who wanted it, in the near 40 years I have been in the industry?

This includes putting cars on planes and not just delivering in the home market.

The question is are they doing a much better PR exercise than we ever did?

Also, what Cazoo and Cinch BCA don’t understand is that there is still a high per cent of punters who when buying their next used car, stay loyal to one dealer, get servicing done and see the same guy who looks after them. These sensible people can’t be bothered with apps, pass words, automated phone systems, far away call centres, security questions, texted back messages etc.when contacting their garage.

Given any opportunity I am making sure people get to know about the downside when buying from the online only operators.

99% of the cars seem to have missing map disks.
where do they go? I assumed sticky fingered dealers at the sale, but they’re still all missing during lockdown.
    had this recently.
L322. Missing the whole changer from the boot. Plus map disk. And the clarion cd changer cartridge.
Someone must be going home each day with a boot load of disks.

who in the chains taking them all???

99% ? Don’t think so,where are you buying stock. When Nav’s were introduced we found a few were missing. We just used to get replacements from ‘ The Nav Meister’ in Germany. Also wagon drivers have been pulling up seats /glove boxes looking for money for as long as I can remember.

I think some of you are are forgetting that the majority of buyers under 30 don't give a shit about the car so long as it has street cred a good communication set up for their overpriced phone and they can meet the payments

The ones that come kick the tyres see if the buggy goes in the boot and last but not least look under the bonnet get less weekly

    The futures not bright

Who would have believed autotrader the mag would one day not be printed

Nice one. When VAT was introduced in 73 when I got my first pitch,a lot of dealers packed in.It was the last straw !

  4. I think there needs to be a ‘spoiler’ video which we can all use spelling out to punters the potential downside and extra cost when buying a used car from an online only dealer compared to an established traditional or local dealer who you can speak to at anytime.

  5. I hope Cazoo go the way of the pushbike food delivery company Deliveroo. They  floated this morning described as a tech company valued at billions and the shares have plunged. It will cost the underwriters billions, might effect Cazoo, hope so.

Worth looking at,some amazing claims and jargon you can steal for yourself. The management- world class team ( none of them from the trade of course ) and they have the firepower to succeed ! They are ahead of Cavana at the same stage in their development - translation - we have lost more money than them.Brittas,Alan Partridge,Reggie Perin ,George Costanza and Kramer come to mind.

I wouldn’t feel to offended. I’m sure Mr Chesterman would say pretty much anything to try and float this company.

It will be interesting to see it’s value in 12 months time.

I’m amazed some of the manufacturers don't all get together and insist on buy back contracts when they offer big discounts to the lease companies. They could direct the prime stock through their own dealer networks and in effect restrict the supply to these start-ups.

    I don’t trust customers

They will say anything .It’s all contrived,if they manage to get the float away, they will have achieved everything.US Online used car dealer Carvana are supposed to be a success, they do $5b t/o and lose -$500m,the shares have done nothing but millions of shares are traded every day.Another US used car dealer called Carlotz managed to float with the idea that punters would pay them $300 to prep and sell their car and when it was sold they would retain another $800.They floated and sell thousands of cars but again they lose money and the share price has gone down.It must be the volume of shares traded that counts ?

  8. Some guys I know ran a busy petrol station, workshop and pitch which was close to the local telly studios. They used to look after a presenters big daft American car.One the guys took it out for a run around but not that far.By the time he got back the local celeb already knew about it.All very Alan Partridge.

  9. I would imagine there is still potential for underhand ‘ bounce out ‘ dealings by auctioneers. If I was bidding and bids went way over Cap when it shouldn’t and was then showing not sold,I would be quickly ringing provisionals to get my name on the sheet.

Same I miss the way it used to be to even the laughs and jokes .

They have probably set up their own WhatsApp group where they can ‘ one up ‘each other like the usual auction ring group of bullshitters of old.I can imagine what it’s like if you post ‘how ya doing’ and in reply ‘ a bit quiet but did 9 on Monday ‘.How about margins ‘ still only netting 2 grand a unit ‘ .Then another ‘ wouldn’t get out of bed for less than 3 grand ‘. You have got to laugh.

Thanks for everyone’s advice on this. I haven’t heard anything from the customer since I told her the warranty was 3 months.  I think she was probably just calling out of hope that it was 6.

Ha Ha,hopefully you are OK,if not you should investigate. That is an unusual car for a woman to buy.In normal times it would make a good rental 24 hour taxi ( usually 3 drivers only one with a taxi licence is not unknown ).Please excuse me but that sort of thinking comes with being in the job forever !

That’s the problem at the second. I’m a bit blind. The phone call from the customer said it was towed in because it failed.

I was just trying to gauge my liability if/when I get another phone call

Tread carefully.I can recall some good ones like checking up and finding it’s a taxi or been towing an overweight caravan .The last one I can recall it was the punter who deliberately burned the clutch out because he wanted to cancel and get his swapper back because he realised he had let it go far too cheaply.I gave him a full refund but not his swapper and thanked him for the business. With a lot of comebacks I used to often get the punter to drive me around for a couple of miles. On one we had fitted a clutch in prep and sold it and a month or two later the guy says it’s slipping. He drives me around and shows how it is slipping.I agree and ask if that is how he normally drives which he confirms so I then have to point out he is driving with his foot resting on the clutch.

With comebacks which are potentially expensive in some cases you have to be like a detective. These days if I was suspicious, I would want a photo of the mileage and the general condition of the car and a copy of the invoice for the new parts incase the clutch is for another car !

Ha Ha.That sounds a bit like when Motability started.Become a Motability named driver for an infirm relative and operate as a taxi driver with a free car. There were cars coming back worn out.Better still in the distant past,a sales manager near us got into trouble loaning out cars on Saturday night straight off the pitch untaxed to his mates. They were used as taxis and brought back early on Monday mornings !

I think since the management change at BCA a few years back, the automotive slant on things has been completely lost.

BCA have good thing going why fuck it up with the retail end of the business which is afterall, where the worst grief is.....some out of the box thinking which is in actual fact, out of of this world, to many looking in from the outside.

Greed is playing a big part backed up by clever talking suits?

Just received an invoice from BCA for a 14 grand car ( not mine ) ,£829 buyers fees plus £57 Assured fee....I think that should be classed as Extortion !

  16. What I don’t understand is BCA’s Cinch operation. Why do they think they can make more money retailing when their auctions have never made as much money as they have of late.I was reading Vertu Motors last accounts,150 retail sites,£3 billion sales,£7m net profit and 40% of the profit came from 8% of sales which was ‘after sales ‘.That about sums the job up.

Are they worth 6M, for me absolutely not, crowded market place etc.

    What's do you think?

6 billion or whatever,if the guy has copped for £100m of investors money already as rumoured,no wonder they are bandying around these figures. It will be interesting to see their next annual accounts.

Just sold a car to an 18 year old lad, pretty much all done by phone with occasional text, so there is hope yet!

Interestingly enough he had a better grasp of the lockdown rules and click and collect than some enquiries I have taken from some older customers that should know better!

You did well, did you check he was 18.Are there any additional precautions dealers should take when doing online/ click and collect sales to kids or new adults acting on their own.I may be wrong but I would want to know what it was going to be used for to be ‘ Fit for purpose ‘ ,a copy of their license and if they could not produce insurance I would be stating on the invoice that they understood they must be appropriately insured before they can drive on a public road.Duty of Care and all that stuff.......and no credit cards !

That's good advice, I'm always wary of buying something which in theory the vendor should be selling themselves.

A while back, I used to see a few Inchcape PXs at Blackbushe and a quick Google revealed that Inchcape had actively tried to sell them and advertised them but failed to sell them in 30 days hence blocking them. I always wondered if they had the full retail prep first or whether they get advertised and only prepped when a deposit is taken. Otherwise they'd be spending a lot on cars that eventually head to the block.

An old customer fancies an XF and is trying to decide between a last of the old shape 3.0 2014 or a 2.0 Ingenum 2018 XF. Buying a 2014 at auction is riskier than an ex lease 2.0 but to me, the 2.0 just feels like a normal reps car rather than a proper Jag.

He probably just wants to attain Jag status. Those XType Mondeo Jags were the same ,the punters thought they had a Jag.

I am OK thank you Casper.Mind I would not like to have a punter like Alex Salmond ! It would be nice to hear you on David’s podcast.

That's great advice trade vet, many thanks. It's been a long time since I used to regularly frequent the halls of Blackbushe and Bridgwater so I've become a bit out of touch of which vendors are selling certain types of stock. I think I'm right in saying that Evans Halshaw operate a 'We Buy Any Car' type outfit so it's possible some Pendragon cars are from that source as well.

Jardine often seem to sell very high end cars at auction - as I'm typing this I see there's a 69 plate 8 series going through! Not that I'm in the market for that sort of stock! I did initially think it a bit strange Pendragon blocking a low mileage Grade 2 2014 Jag. I bet it still makes more than I was hoping to pay anyway! As I was saying earlier, I've noticed that a lot of UK Car Group Premium and UK Car Group Low Mileage line cars are making a lot these days and it's difficult to work out where they are actually from.

It can sometimes be tricky to work out why main dealers send stock they could sell themselves to auction - there was a BMW I was potentially interested in a while back and I was told that the BMW main dealer had to block it as it had missed its first service so couldn't be sold under their Approved Used banner.

UK Car Group are We Buy Any Car and owned by BCA.They bring top money because they are generally good and have an ‘Assured ‘ description.I have bought plenty of them and when the odd one had been misdescribed in some way, BCA have been good about it.Maybe because they own and enter all UK Car Group vehicles.

Those who got caught up in the PPI mis selling scandal will know what I mean.I still get letters from Claims Companies for deals in 2005 when we stopped offering PPI in 2001 ?

If answering your questions on this forum is the definition of 'self promotion' then we are guilty. However it would appear the confusion on this thread is from dealers who have listened to other dealers who are against test drives, making up their own version of the law, claiming they know of people who have been fined for it and saying it’s not moral, in an attempt to deter others from operating in a manner that suits their business. We have just reiterated what we have always said.

Your points re Distance Sales is a valid argument and one we have discussed  in the team and with some clients. However, we see the results of consumer/dealer court cases every week and cannot rule out a judge voiding a non distance sale completed in lockdown (meaning full refund) based on the Covid rules of only being able to respond to remote orders. Ultimately, the distance sales regs have not been tested in a higher court and nor have the Covid rules. We give advice based on the law and our vast experience of motor trade cases but its obviously up to individual dealers how much of that advice they want to follow (or not as the case may be).

Claims for mis selling during lockdown. That could be next, what a headache that could turn out to be if your paperwork is not precise. No defence if you have broken the law, void deal, full refund plus any consequential damages.
