Clio vibration

Recommended Posts

Hi got a wee Clio tce that's got me scunnered with a vibration issue that's most noticeable at 60mph plus.

In the last few days I've changed pads discs, track rod ends, swapped wheels n had them balanced ..those things needed done irrespective of vibration however was sure thatd solve issue. Engine mounts appear in good shape.

I'm of the thought it's a balancing issue? acceleration or braking isnt a factor. coasting at high speed and vibration felt though floor. no groans/strange noise s from steering . rack has been changed in the last year by unknown garage along with wafer thin control arms. Tyres look and feel ok

Any ideas before i pass problem to a workshop

Nearly wrote that but he said his tyres are ok.

Swap fronts with backs and see if the vibration goes (might not see a subtle deformation).

They can look ok, but until you can see the wheel spinning you can’t really tell.

Alloys in good condition but horrible aftermarket things that are probably to blame . Tie rods didn't look old but had plenty play in them. I'm probably over thinking a simple ish issue.

Aftermarket alloys that are slightly too large for the hub? There are spacing rings available if that is the case.

PS, some Clio's do and some don't have undertrays, that can flap away at speed.

Great shout

I had the same issue. I was told tyres were ok until I went to an old guy who had been in the tyre industry for years . He told me definately tyre. I paid up under protest thinking it can't be, and as true as his word the vibration at 60 mph had gone .

Good shout. spigot ring is slightly out of tolerance leaving a very small space between hub and wheel. Had every intention of changing alloys so not so bad. Cheers fella's

Yes not by much but enough to make me think the aftermarket alloys fit is the problem. past receipts show ongoing suspension steering trouble. the threads in hub are probably worn

I'm betting the previous owner couldn't solve issues hence the low price.

My old car (when I was working/employee) was an E350 Cab.  Lovely thing that I bought a couple of years old with 20k.  Only ever had it serviced at Merc (becuase it was in warranty), never had any problems, maintained regardless of cost etc etc.

One day, driving on M6 had a horrible shake, pulled in to Corley Services and checked whatever I could, nothing stuck in wheels, tyres looked all good, nothing hanging underneath, I am the only driver and it and had just done 100 miles fault free the same day.  Totally fumuxed.

Took it to my tyre man who also said looks ok but we shall just remove the fronts and check the inner wall.

Jesus H Christ, never seen bulges like that outside of a 70's porn film!

Seriously though, I had driven to work (about 70 miles), not used the car all day, drive home and suddenly started a wobble, like wheel balancing on steroids (sorry, I know you've just been to the gym).

The whole tyre has deformed, look around the entire circumferance.

Gone at 10, 11, 1, 2 and 4pm (as in clock face).

No explanation from me, pothole?

From past experience with a Peugeot 307 it would start wobbling at around 60mph everything checked and eventually turned out to be a bad gearbox

Just remembered a real oddball one from a while back.

Had a Cranberry Red Jag 4.0 Sov' that developed a wheel wobble but only after 20 mins on fast roads.....binding front caliper......and no, the disc wasn't warped:wacko:

Was it ever run flat, even for only 20 yards or so?

Never - and as the only driver I can confirm.

I had Kumho tyres fitted
