It’s easy. Simply, start with a completely empty tank, completely fill with premium unleaded fuel, realise you’re a twat - call AA whom agree to send a fuel recovery equiped vehicle, pay a fortune then finally refill with premium diesel.

I'm currently sat at the service station waiting for them to arrive.

About 15 years ago a sourced a A4 1.9 TDI for a relative, which I was going to deliver to Norfolk, I filled up in Exeter (misfuelled) and got as far as Taunton before it lit up like a Xmas tree and stopped. Got trailored to Taunton Audi who raped my wallet of £800 for the privilage.....

Don't feel bad, maybe it's just me but I see loads of these misfuelling incidents. A couple a week I reckon. How much do they charge you and how long have you waited?

£250 of that is the fuel itself (petrol and diesel).

I am still waiting, paid £199 (will get VAT back) for the service.

Just pissed off I can’t keep the fuel because it would be diluted enough to use in a petrol car. 

Luckily I realised before starting the car.

New HP Pump and Injectors would have cost more than you've paid... Silver lining and all.

Done that before, only £20 though in an Alfa 147 - Got 10 mins before the EML came on. Called RAC, who quoted a price, then massivly overcharged - so made a complaint and got half back.

Of course, after no calls on the car - that was the day the phone was ringing on it!

Misfuel - £199 (AA Discount and because I hadn’t started the engine + £10 worth of diesel inc).

Diesel - £119

£423 inc VAT (I will claim the VAT)

Bought a saab recently. Thought it was diesel was trying to shove the diesel nozzle in the cap... Wouldn't fit in.. Was thinking something wrong with the cap 

Checked the rpm and then the paperwork it said petrol! 

 

Now i ask myself before filling up... Is this petrol or diesel

When someone like the AA or RAC gets called to sort out a 'misfuelling', apparently they can't process the 'mixed' fuel themselves. They send the extracted fuel to refining specialists who can split it back out to petrol & diesel. This costs the AA / RAC / whoever quite a lot of money - so they charge the end customer handsomely for the privilege.

A few years back I was chatting to the guy who runs one of those companies that offer "experience days" in the Northampton area where you can drive tanks and other military vehicles. He owned almost fifty different vehicles, all (unsurprisingly!) with truly lousy fuel consumption. I asked him how much he was spending each year to fuel them all and was stunned when he said "Actually, my fuel bill is zero"!!

His vehicles tolerated running on mixed petrol & diesel, so he contacted the AA & RAC and told them he would take mixed fuel off their hands for free. It was a win-win for both sides - he got fuel for nothing and the AA / RAC got to dispose of their unwanted mixed fuel for no cost. If any of you were thinking about the many perks of using a Chieftain tank as your daily smoker, that might be useful knowledge.

However do bear in mind that it probably won't pass the ULEZ emissions threshold...

To be fair and think about it.

I paid about £165 to the AA for my fuck up.

in return, they sent a patrol with a special collection tank and pump.

Probably £40 in wages, £20 in van costs (fuel, fit out and lease), £10 worth of fuel and whatever happens after they leave me.

I don’t think they’re having it off to be fair.

I couldn’t be arsed with the hassle of dragging the car in (2.7 tonnes), draining the fuel etc and it was freezing/pissing it down, just to save a couple hundred quid.

I fucked up and that’s the price I paid - hey ho

Last week prior to a viewing on a golf diesel I went and put some fuel in ready for the viewing, customer arrived and when he started the car it cranked a bit before firing up I thought that's odd it usually fires strait up, anyway we went for a test drive and all fine customer happy and leaves a deposit, after he left I went to move the car and it would not start, I was puzzled after a few minutes of brain racking I thought all iv'e done today is put some fuel in pulled out the receipt from my pocket and shit UNLEADED, I had forty eight hours before customer was collecting so drained tank/pipes/filter etc and eventually got it fired up, Wow what a close escape.

You had a narrow escape - I don’t know what’s wrong with me but I am already laughing about my £400 fill up.

Shit happens - move on.

Shite it's happened Mark but I like quite a few others have been there so take some consolation from that. 

Best one was deciding to take a TDI Sharan Id taken in px to Ireland, with the family on board. Filled up at Tescos with the kids all killing each other so was distracted and topped up a 1/4 tank of diesel with unleaded...

Around Carlisle it started to really bog down and struggled when I change down gears so I was convinced I'd bought a dog. Next day in Belfast the friendly AA guy diagnosed that I'd misfuelled (receipt from Tesco confirmed it ffs) and having used most of the mixed fuel on the drive over, his advice was brim it (with diesel this time) and drive away at it. 

A day of running around and it was fine. 

Not so lucky was running out of fuel in my wife's clk270 about 50 feet from the station, but after negotiating a roundabout and a hill to get it to the pumps, in my blinding sweat I put £30 of unleaded in and wondered afterwards why it wouldn't fire... Just crank crank crank. Thought I had air now in the system. 

After much fuckery this episode ended up bringing on the black death which cost me two injectors so that generally was an expensive lesson. 

No doubt I'll do it again!

Will diluted diesel work? After all water is harmless

Wife filled her A3 with petrol , Called us because it stopped , so we recovered it back to our place .

She goes to my son " do we need a specialist to come out LOL  "

I’m pretty certain if you get water in your engine it’s a gonna. Water doesn’t combust so the valves and pistons would get bent, I think?? Dave would know for sure!
