Cheapest MB Fix ever ?? Mel's C Class Broke last night :(

Recommended Posts

I took Mel out last night wen't in her Car cos it was nearest the House ;)

As I drove out onto the main road I noticed no power, diesel knock and some smoke out the back .............

Fuck !!

Turned round in the Filling Station, drove back home 200 yards and parked it up no Fault Lights, would barely rev, Idling sweet.

Took her to the shops in the E Class, and upon return I plugged the Snap On in for a quick look see, still wouldn't rev, diesel ping and smoke :(

No Fault Codes ............... Well that's the shit Snap On, I thought, I'll run it on SDS in the morning ......................

Before I went in I opened the bonnet, popped off the Engine Cover and had a good look round, then down the side of the Airbox, down low, there I see a tiny Circlip sitting on the Under Tray, and the Rod between Turbo and Actuator Motor dangling free :D

I slid the Rod back onto the actuator with a very long pair of pointed pliers, fired it up, vroom vroom, fine, until it rattled off again on Idle due to no C Clip ;)

Fished out the C Clip with Magnet, to find it fell into 2 bits, broken in half, so this morning I'll rip the Airbox off and refit with a new 5 pence C Clip ;)

There we go, simples

Shame it wasn't a Billy's Car, i could have milked that job

I wouldn't do it to a trader or good customer but a casual walk in ..........................

Kerrrrrrching ££££££££££££££££££££  :D

It's done now, fiddly, but under half hour, road tested, sweet as a nut again, Brownie Points earned, :)

I'll see your cheap fix and I'll raise you!

Drove a 2013 TT TFSI that I bought a couple of days ago on the A40 and got traction control light, Stabilization failure message, EPC light and engine management. Car drove well, maybe slight lack of power.

My Snap on showed "Mass Airflow sensor signal implausible" and also in Brake electronics: "Fault code stored in engine control module". Yes, the MAF electrical connector was loose, almost off. My guess: someone at BCA partially unplugged it hoping to trigger EML and to get a bargain. 3 seconds labour to fix, no parts needed!

By the way that 2009 CLC I emailed you about a while ago did indeed have some oil ingress from the Cam adjuster magnets wiring all the way to the plug for the engine ECU. Another cheap fix, upgraded the cable connections for around £30 and a good clean of the plug.

Nice one, good when you get a result like that, shame you didn't get it cheaper because of the fault ;)

Common fault with that wiring harness, like the old 722.6 Trans with leaky Connector Bush and TCU full of Oil ;)

I'd like to think that you haven't been ripped off, being in the Trade, but the reality is you probably have been a few times :(

To me, always gotta look after fellow Motor Trade, hell my local Garages send work to me because they can't do it, some of them turn out really crap jobs, then the Car comes to me, I spot it but I say nowt to the Billy owner, that Garage are fellow traders, they also put me onto cheap Cars with a problem which I buy, fix and re sell, this is how our Trade should work ;)

Well apart from one Local Garage who should be shut down and burnt down IMHO, downright dangerous repairs, un skilled pissed up muppets working on folks Cars, 2 pending court cases ATM, one of the Cars crashed in a ditch cos they left Carrier Bolts loose , Caliper came off and locked the N/S/F Wheel..................... Old lady in ditch :(

Yeah, them, in conversation I will actively advise anyone, "I don't mind if you don't come to me, but avoid them like the plague"

Traders are Traders, Billies are ............ well Billies, would the local Iron Monger sell stock to me cheaper, do something for nothing, nope he wouldn't.

I'm not suggesting charging for parts you've not fitted, just up selling the job, for example, Mels C Class ...................

Billies Invoiced version of events ...............................

1hr Diagnostic, 1 hr stripping off parts for closer examination, and a half hour for freeing off a seized Tubby Linkage, £1.80p for 2 Stainless C clips and 10% for workshop consumables :D

In actual fact, all it cost Mel was Coffee in bed and a blow job :lol::lol:

When I had my Gearbox firm we used to talk a lot with other Gearbox Specialists, there was one firm who used to send a fitter out when they were quiet, he would go round all the Sierra's, Granada's & Scorpio's in a local Multi Storey drop on the floor and lean underneath and pull the Vacuum Pipe off the Modulator on Auto Trans, 5 seconds to do that, then wait for the phone to ring !!

I know they were telling the truth, because we got a few calls now and then, and when we looked at the car the pipe was off

I DID get it cheap, maybe not as cheap as the underbidder would've wanted if the eml came on but the alloy wheels looked horrible in DIY black with scuffed edges. 48 hours later it was unrecognizable, I'll try and attach a photo...

I remember back in the late eighties, a Builder relative had an old Transit, rotten underneath, so I got him an MOT from the local well known iffy MOT brigade.

Relative kept it 4 months then sold it, the new owner got all stroppy with the MOT guy, who then tried to get all threatening like, and insist I repaired it or we'd all get our fingers burnt

I got a bit stroppy back and told him to fuck off and repair it himself, he was the one who passed it, and anyway all he had to do was state that it wasn't in that condition when he passed it, (it was a lot easier back then without pooters) !!

He did repair it AFAIK lol.

Jeez, I've just started reminiscing, I now realise I could write a book about the SE London / Kent Motor Trader "Character" stories  :D

LOL, if he's been around Trade in that area as long as I did I'm sure he'll agree with me, Rory in Essex as well, they'll tell you, there was and to some extent still is some real Characters down there ;)

I live a very quiet life these days :D
