This touch in technique is ideal for scratches bang in the middle of doors where it’s impossible to do a smart repair without it looking awful. Obviously scrapes on bumpers are best off left to the smart repairers. It’s also great for stone chips on bonnets/fenders

And here was me thinking this part of the forum was going downhill. I love a gadget so the  order has been placed and my subscription to midget porn.com has been cancelled. Maybe it might be worth us having a 'recon 'sub forum or something along those lines?

I had the paint scraper 20+ years back it was a useful tool that I gave away when I stopped playing with paint. Not forgetting that when you touch up a metallic the particles all bunch up at the bottom, which shows dark from one side light to other. I hated doing the job.

Agreed, very good idea

 

Love all the stuff chris fix does, this chap here does some brilliant simple videos thats really helped me, Im now confident refurbing alloys and doing small smart repairs, well worth following

Perfect for an ol' shitter but i'd never consider doing this on anything worth more than a few grand. 2-3 hours work, £20 in materials and the finish is passable for a banger but not for anything else, you can see where the paint isn't blended properly as soon as he takes that masking off. But very impressive for a rattle can and DIY.

We even dabbled with this in house and it was an epic fail, i think we just didnt do enough of them to learn from your mistakes we sold the kit and now just get smart repair back in for the nicer stock.

Loving the Festool block Justin, you need to be careful and get the right angle with it on curved body panels but it's a great but of kit.

I'm discovering that you can really load the paint up and get it pretty much all over the gaff and it will still get ot off. Obviously I don't aim to do that but you don't have to be shy with the paint either.

Just think of the things you can spot over this weekend that need "denibbing".. Whole new world out there.. dont tell them down the block, BCA will make all grade 4 grade 2..

 

Any ideas on if this will work on a deep clear coat repair and buff up? ie filling scratch with a clear coat to fill groove then "festool away" and buff?

I can't see any reason why you can't repair a deep scratch and buff with this tool.

The main issues are ensuring the scratch is clean and that there are not any jaged edges plus building the paint and clearcoat up slowly

Can't see why it wont but I suppose the main issue is colour match, Given BASF make most of the automotive paints nowadays the dealer pens/paint are brilliant.

I have a Porsche to do next week and the colour is Platinum Silver. I've used a little of the paint away from the car, let it dry and the match is near perfect.

If they are clearcoat scratches wet sand, 1500, 3000 and then compound and polish. 30 mins from start to finish. 

But yes, if you wanted to drop clearcoat into a scratch and nip it off with this tool it will work.

Be good to hear how you get along; I was reading up and watching some you tube on repairs and the also this new (too me) Festool denibber, someone noted that metallic paints lose metal flake to the bottom of the "hole" when applied, thus not being so effective.. To my mind this made sense (simple mind I might add), but from experience is this case?

Should it be just flat colours repaired in this way/by non professional (me) etc? therefore leaving metallic/pearlescents for a spray shop..

Cheers EPV, from my limited view on this I'm thinking the same way, be excellent if we can crack such small repairs = very doable in down time.. dare I say enjoyable too..

My decent body shop is a 3 week wait man.. Cheers both for the input...
