  1. one thing ive learnt over the years, NO car is sold until it drives off the forecourt, a thousand and one things can [ and ive seen it ! ] happen, never count your chickens until theyre all in shed or something somebody once said , probably me, i cant remember
  2. good point by james that folk will think oh great "all is rosy in the world " when its not, robert peston of bbc is suggesting the good figures is due to all the ppi payments people are getting and slapping it down as a depo ! i find the general public arent as daft as the media like to think they are, and quite a few have seen these pre reg cars at knockdown prices advertised in there papers and on forecourts, good luck with the foi on the dvla james, keep us informed.
  3. would a" freedom of information " request work ? its certainly worth investigating, if not possible then foi the dvla ?
  4. http://www.directline.com/about_us/news_19072013.htm " trusted car dealerships" ?
  5. i actually do all three, AND have balloons hanging off mirrors [ we all know balloons sell cars ! ] think it was inky ian [ wno does the dodgy mot certificates] that was asking me other day, did i know anyone for a thousand mileage disclaimer stickers, slight problem with them, theyre not sticky back, and fall off the speedo quite easy, well i bought the lot ! lovely jubbly !
  6. The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 makes it an offence to place two or more motor vehicles for sale on a road* within 500m of each other. Traders doing this could be issued with an £100 fixed penalty notice or prosecuted and fined up to £2,500. note: The legal definitions of a ‘road’ or ‘highway’ are wide and can also include grass verges, lay-bys and other areas immediately adjacent to the main carriageway. So, if when you phone the council to complain, like i did, you need to speak to highways, you quote the above act, and find theyve never heard of it, you also give them reg numbers and proof of being a trader because the same mobile number is in all 3 cars, they promise to look into it , but dont, but that might just be the case round here, phone up ! complain ! tell us what happened ! maybe get your friends to complain too ! "sometimes customers get the cars they deserve" quote by Gavin@Rousdon is spot on
  7. Heard of many a drive off during test drives, thats one to watch out for, i have a set routine, i drive first, tell them they can drive back, get in, go uproad, show them the controls, let them play with the switches etc, then ask them if they would like to drive back, if they do, i pull up in a safe place, wait till theyve got out, then i remove keys and stand by drivers door being courteous holding it open for them, by the time ive got round to passenger side and myself seated theyve got comfy in there seat, and i hand them the keys. Many a time though weve arrived back at base and ive "forgotten" to offer them the drive back, 2 reasons, well 3 actually, 1, its my insurance, 2, most people tend to speed on test drives, and 3, i hate being a passenger !
  8. it strikes me that some companies / councils dont recheck with dvla over five weeks if theres been a change of owner [ as it would cost them again the fee at dvla ] because i have had letters up to 6 weeks .
  9. Seem to have had my fair share this year, not mine, from cars ive sold ! you see a high percentage of vehicles leaving my place have been registered to me. I am very good with the paperwork, within reason, i even nowadays put down the time as well as the date the car leaves my premises,on the invoice, i make a point with the customer that they mustnt loose the green slip i have just handed them [ from the v5] or it will cost them £25 and that makes there ears prick up and then they do hear the next part that the car WILL be put in there name/address from date of collection, so theyre not trying anything on i dont think, dont they care and just accept it as a hazard of modern life ? one poor chap about 2 month ago keeps going over a bridge in york where daytime travel is now banned, the council in there letter/s want, if recently sold, the original invoice posting to them prooving the sale ! its not happening ! and hasnt ! all they get is date of sale and details of new keeper ! Its the hassle, the stamp, and more importantly the time taken up with these tickets that annoys me, but can i charge a " fixed future administration fee in case of further action to be taken regarding parking tickets" fee of lets say £20 refundable within 6 month if no tickets received ? can i hell !
  10. what happened to peak selling time 11.30 am saturday morning ? look out the window and see them arrive bang on time, mum dad and son [who will have "anything "] but dads got to pull the drivers door up and down first to check for worn hinges like his old cortina before theres any mention of a test drive ! mondays best for me nowadays, have they looked at dross other the weekend though and picked me last ? many questions !
  11. i occasionally ask a walk on customer how they found out about the car, they may have just been driving past so i ask them in a way so it doesnt seem like a "survey" for example " are you local?" if so we could like we after you in future ? if the answers ebay, then i know they mean autotrader, as i dont use ebay ! [ have tried]. But it does show they have looked on ebay as well when searching, tell you what i do, play the customers part, look myself, a/trader, ebay, gumtree, all the usual including local papers, see how hard it is to find a lets say focus, that looks good, localish and well presented advert, and i find myself back on a/trader, yes theyre exspensive [ how much have i spent over 20 years ? gulp! ] but they move stock, and if they dont i reappraise my vehicle, but a funny story is sometimes you can be asking too low a price, i have sold better when ive raised my asking price but thats another story for another day, sorry rambling, what was the question, too exspensive YES! but, if the price was lowered would we get even more competion from other dealers jumping on the lowered price? one to be considered ?
  12. my sales at christmas time are only because theyve either blown theres up or crashed them, at one time cabriolets used to sell well, prezzie for the wife or bit on the side, do they still sell over xmas ? once had a call from the autotrader magazine christmas day ! honest ! few year ago now mind, now as much as i like a sale just like any other guy ................. oh and merry xmas
  13. Another crazy idea that puts joe bloggs on the bus or cant get to work at all and pay his taxes ? probably be put back anyway, usually is, or as said on here "pass and advise", another pass and advise next to slight corrosion on exhaust that i once got from a tester who never got my business again ! my customer who saw that demanded a complete new exhaust ! it didnt happen !
  14. scrap metal dealers new [ish] regulations was supposed to cut this down, payment by cheque or bank transfer only, but when the same scrap metal dealers company can cash the cheque next door for 4% it doesnt help does it ?
