Agreed. Anyone saying this is straightforward clearly doesn’t appreciate the situation. I thought you’d already had a mechanic look and diagnose it. Perhaps get a DEKRA engineers report done and go from there. I think the lack of PDI hamstrings your opportunity for repair. I also think it doesn’t matter what the cause of the issue is, you’d lose in court. -

The car in question yes but not the Car Nick was referring to, that being the 500,000 mile theoretical car. -
I’ll hold a car for a week with a £250 deposit. It’s non refundable and a receipt is issued with that wording. The car is left up for sale and any subsequent enquiries are recorded and kept just in case. Because of how I run things, I will rarely end up putting a car back on sale.

I’ll be honest that sounds over cautious to me and something else to remember to do (send the v5 off) i prep well and rarely have issues. Those I do have would be fixed. In the event of a screamer/refund i’d only refund when I have the v5 in my possession. The car would have to be returned to me and a bank transfer would be done and ownership put back in the trade. I like to show the punter at the point of sale that the ownership is theirs at that point, they are taxed and they have sorted their insurance, wave them off and rarely hear from them again. Each to their own but i’d personally never delay transferring ownership.

Not right now you can't! That website is down n'all! I can't believe there are any dealers out there who don't transfer ownership online. It's a piece of the proverbial. Within 30 mins of the billy saying "I do" they're the new keeper, taxed and insured. No additional paperwork needed. The internet is great when used properly!

I’m not saying anything about the badge, I don’t like the cheap shitty interiors they usually provide or the god awful styling. But clearly that’s changing judging by this one pictured above.

Ditch the mocha brown but yeah, it looks smart enough. Will be some embarrassed golf gti drivers when that thing smokes them at the lights. Heck, even some porksters will get a fright.

Ok well given what we do know, let’s assume the OP did a Lawgistics pdi and got it signed. What good is that in the instance of shagged pistons etc? That’s what the culprit is believed to be according to the mechanic OP has been in touch with. At best the pdi means he has taken away punters right to reject or refund. He still needs to fix it? -

Ok, i’m not being argumentative here i’m genuinely debating. If, IF the pdi has been done, fault wasn’t present at the point of sale etc that still doesn’t overcome the fact that this particular fault (shagged pistons/seals/rings) if that is what the prognosis is, isn’t wear and tear. You wouldn’t see these elements of an engine as servicable when they are worn? -

I think it’s fair to say you don’t need a pdi to confirm that clouds of white smoke and sudden loss of oil pressure weren’t present at the point of sale mate. The fault has developed, clearly but it’s evident the car isn’t fit for purpose or of satisfactory quality. Are you getting at that the customer needs to accept a repair? I can see how that would hold up, definitely. -

Not sure I follow. Even if it had a clean pdi, similar or same as Lawgistics, and he’s done average miles, 2,000 say, how is that relevant when something like the pistons or rings/seals have gone? I’m obviously missing the obvious! -

It’s definitely a refund, repair and resell. I can’t see how any punter would want a recon and not be worrying about the car every night they went to sleep. -
Meddle? It’s a 2 minute addition to transferring the ownership to them online. In fact it’s on the same bloody page as the transferring of ownership. No idea why you wouldn’t do it other than pure stubbornness.

Indeed i’d say £1800 i’ve just had a 3.0 petrol x5 engine recon’d. It’s not a complete disaster albeit far from ideal, refund the customer, I like Rory’s idea and get it repaired and sold again. Can’t let these setbacks stop you. -
